    I forget exactly who it was for Sprint (CFO I believe) giving a financial report last year in August and said all future Sprint phones will be Tri-band. Then he was asked about the iPhone and back-tracked saying he can't comment on anything Apple. While they haven't made any official announcements about the iPhone 6 being Tri-band, it can't be stated that they said the 5s was going to be Tri-band either. This will all be for naught in about 24 hours once it hits the FCC and AJ gets his hands on the report.

    Last time I went through the Cumberland area I was roaming on US Cellular, which is also what VZW roams on in that area as well. I actually had an intermittent Sprint signal and I don't recall really using data when I was roaming, so I can't comment on whether it will be functional for you or not.

    I can't imagine the family's grief. Only close family and friends can truly help in this situation, but I hope our contributions can help give a small glimmer of happiness in such a dark period for this family.

    On an iPhone. you can turn on airplane mode, then go in and switch wifi back on. I'm not sure about Android, but I'd imagine the same would be possible. Then again, this thread is about Wifi calling and iPhones don't support it (yet).

    Azimuth, my situation is off topic so I was going to PM you but then thought others on here may be interested as well (or possibly have a solution). Here's my issue, I have family traveling to Tanzania in a few months and they'd like to have a phone / wireless data connection where possible. In doing some minimal online research it appears that Vodacom - Tanzania offers the best coverage and is the furthest along with their wireless data capabilities. I cannot find a method of obtaining and activating a Vodacom SIM pre-trip; only at kiosks / stores once they arrive. However, I have found a vendor that I can obtain a Vodacom - South Africa SIM card pre-activated. So my question is two-fold: first, will Vodacom-South African roam on their Tanzanian counterpart, and if so is it viewed as native or would their be roaming fees? Second, do you know of any other methods of obtaining a SIM card of a Tanzanian carrier that could be activated and shipped to the US prior to their trip? I realize that Google Voice, Tapatalk, FaceTime voice calls, and other VOIP providers are all options for the wifi hunters, but I want to give them the easiest solution that will work in the most places. Calls & texts would be most important, followed by simple web browsing, emails, and MMS messaging.

    First, didn't the Chairman cap the amount of spectrum that one carrier can obtain in an effort to allow smaller carriers like Sprint and TMobile a better opportunity to win some spectrum? So wouldn't a combined TMobile and Sprint then put themselves into the larger carrier category? Second, whether justifiable or not, the chairman is opposed to the Sprint / TMobile merger. Allowing them to join forces in the spectrum bid would sort of be like allowing them to back door any merger efforts they're currently trying to put together. And third, one goal of the spectrum sale is to generate revenue; if carriers were allowed to join forces (aka collude with one another) in the bidding process, that would effectively eliminate one of the big bidders in the process, in turn reducing the potential of income. The more bidders putting cash on the table, the higher the bid price (supply & demand).

    Well, this works but only because the phone essentially disables LTE for you...when you're on a call your data connection is disabled therefore the only connection you maintain is your 1x. With that said, this feature is a nice way to track what towers / sites you're connected to while on a call as well as identifying which band you're on during a call (1x800 or 1x1900). For me it's less convenient to have to place a call to someone / or even a dead line than it is to go to settings / cellular / quickly turn off the LTE connection while I check my current 1x / EVDO status.

    Except in this case; depending on where he's located in Southern Michigan he may be in the IBEZ, and Samsung has installed antennas and RRUs that are capable of only 1900 MHz. West of I-69 is the rough cutoff for the IBEZ.

    Ok, well maybe it has shown the band class when connected to 1x800 for you, but it hasn't showed that info when connected to 1x1900 since the 4S. Whenever I've connected to 1x800 I never had that data either, I had to look at the network ID for 22xxx to even tell if I was on 1x800. It was always sort of frustrating that data was absent and I could never find an explanation.

    Whoever it was opened a thread and charged $5 to get access to the dev beta downloads of iOS7 & he gave half the proceeds to S4GRU. I think he only gave out a limited number of spots and once it was done Robert closed the thread.

    Looks like the 1x screen finally shows the band class too. Grab a screen shot next time your connected to 1x800, it'll be interesting to see what it reads.

I just got one and plugged it into my unlocked phone and it picked up AT&T right away. I'm impressed. I think I just solved our first world problem...

    It's a bit of a hassle, but Telcel Amigo is definitely the way to go. There are shops that sell SIMs and top-up cards on every corner, but I strongly recommend searching for a corporate store ahead of time because I've found they're the only ones that can activate an account for a non-Mexican resident. Plus, most of the corporate stores will at least have one or two agents that can speak (broken) English whereas it's hit or miss anywhere else. Also, be sure to bring your passport with you as you will be required to show it when you activate the account. It's been a while since I was down there, but the last time I set up my account you could get a one week data package for roughly $12 that would give you 1GB of data, and unlimited calling / texting to up to 5 Mexican cell phones of your choice (your ¡Amigos!....hence the name of their pre-paid brand). I think calling an American line was like $.25 per minute and texting was like $.10. Once you get the SIM activated you can find top up cards virtually anywhere and just call it in but if you've got web access, you can also setup an account online and use a CC to auto-top up you account should you need any extra minutes. If you ever plan on going back, you can top up your line with the minimum amount every 6 months and you're balance will remain and the account will stay active - I think the minim top-up is less than $1, but it's just as hassle to remember to do it. I inadvertently let mine lapse and now can't get back online.

    What if I don't want to pay any more for water to wash my clothes or clean my dishes, but my neighbor is willing to pay a bit extra to have filtered and purified water run to a separate tap in his kitchen? If I still get my water at the rates I'm paying today and now my neighbor gets the extra that he's willing to pay for, and the water company makes more from it, the government takes in more tax revenue, and everybody is happy, what's the wrong with that? I'm not sold on either side of this debate, but I am really intrigued to hear everybody's argument.

    The only difference between 55011 and 55018 is that 55018 is for SVLTE capable phones (Simultaneous Voice & LTE) - see this google doc for more detail: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1eNgQKxdPHgua60suUeQ4E7KvtUAFPDVkpqTL2sBorNg/pubhtml . The PRL has nothing to do with LTE priority other than telling the phone to scan for LTE; from there the network will determine which band to put you on for Spark capable phones.     It drives me crazy when signals get all "fucky"...[emoji6] There is still one tower very close to that interchange that's still 3G only which means it doesn't have backhaul yet; if you're coming South on 21 you're most likely connected to it.

    Just to clarify, Sprint is deploying 1x on the SMR (800) band, not EVDO. Technically speaking 1x is considered a 3G technology but is no where near capable of the speeds you see on NV EVDO which is traditionally referred to as 3G on a CDMA carrier such as Sprint. I'm not sure, but an unburdened 1x carrier is capable of something like 250 Kbps where EVDO is upwards of 2.5 Mbps.

    I don't think that's a generic marketing text, I think you should expect some type of NV upgrade soon. The way things have been going around here, if it's 3G only LTE will not be too far behind.
