Network Vision/LTE - Missouri Market (includes St. Louis)

I just got 56mb down at St. Mary's hospital.

There is also a B41 tower at Big Bend & Dale Ave -- good coverage in that stretch of highway 40.

Depending on which way choose to drive home I can get LTE the entire way home. If I go the faster way there is about a 5 minute gap of no LTE and crappy 3G. Come on Sprint hook me up.

For those that don't remember I used to be a long time Sprint/Ting user from Springfield/Rogersville, MO.  I work in Bethalto, IL during the week and am back home on the weekends.  After the N5 camera out I decided to take the dive and pay the ETF to eliminate my Sprint contract and go with AT&T go phone.  I've had a pretty good time using Go Phone with my N5 for the past 6 months.

I'm considering moving back to Ting (Sprint MVNO) to help consolidate bills but I lurk here and still read about quite a few issues with Sprint.  Heck in my home town many of the craptastic telephone towers Sprint loves to use haven't even been touched in the area of town where I frequent the most.  Is it time for me to come home or should I keep AT&T or try T-Mob for awhile.

BTW I love the fact that you can "roam" 3 carriers with this phone.  On business trips I can and have easily moved between SIMS for better service without a hitch.  Gotta love Google.

They are making a lot of progress but if your common areas haven't been touched, it's probably not worth coming back just yet.  It's tough to say how long it will be until they blanket your zones with LTE but once they do, it should be a significant enough improvement IMO.

I would say everywhere except the immediate area around battlefield mall is in good shape. More than half of the city is on LTE now, which had taken a lot of the load off 3G, so if you get stuck on it it's not to bad.

The idiot Springfield government is still holding up the permits for the remaining telephone pole sites, but the 5 upgraded sites in and just outside of town provide pretty good coverage. Especially with the N5 running the .15 radio.

Both Rogersville sites are up and running, and with the N5 you should have no problem getting signal there. It's probably still a couple of months before we start to see any activity on the Band 26 front, so if you are waiting for that, you might want to wait a bit longer.

Was in the Sprint store in Creve Coeur today, playing with a GS5. I also played with a few others. After turning off the WiFi (sneaky!), it was one of the only phones getting usable LTE. Since the phone didn't have a play store account, I tested via: http://i.dslr.net/iphone_speedtest.html with about 3m download, while my M7 held in the vicinity couldn't even connect to LTE. Also, the M8 nearby showed LTE, but couldn't connect. A nearby G2 was connecting, but I forget the speed test result. Not the most accurate test, but at a glance, it looks like the GS5 gets better LTE reception than the HTC lineup - something I'm going to be thinking about in the coming weeks (reception on my M7 has been frustrating).

I would consider the Nexus 5 if you are looking for good reception. But beware the Spark update has been "coming soon in early 2014" since November.

ICYMI, according to Dan@Sprint support, the Spark update is supposedly coming next week.

We'll see.

The update enables Sprint Spark on Bands 26 and 41, along with providing "miscellaneous Android updates."

Sprint has updated their software status page so I would imagine people will start getting it at some point.

Just so everyone knows, the latest Signalcheck Pro update includes site logging. So instead of having to take a screenshot of every site, all you need to do it turn on logging and then go to Menu>Logs>Export. Then you can open your CSV file and it will show you the GCI's and PCIs in a list format!

It also has the ability to save a note that will save to the log if you needed to note where you were to reference later.

I live a few minutes away from there but hardly EVER head in that direction so I haven't checked on the tower in over a month.  I'll try to find time to go by tomorrow before work maybe.

I was traveling west and was on Hwy 30 and Northwest Blvd Band 41 then Band 25 as I crossed Sugar Creek then I looked again and saw an ID I was not familiar with so that was my guess but I looked it up on the sheet once I got home to confirm. I was only paying attention because I was adding locations in the SignalCheck Pro notes with the new update today.

    • Was at the Yankees vs Tigers game today and besides being a terrible day to have good seats, T-Mobile had great speeds via the stadium's DAS. I consistently saw 500-600Mbps on 5G and on LTE I got upwards of 200Mbps. I noticed that the stadiums DAS is broadcasting 140MHz n41 while macros that surround the stadium are at 80MHz.

    • I've now seen how things work in Kobe, Hiroshima, and Osaka, as well as some areas south of Osaka (e.g. Wakayama, Kinokawa), and tried three more SIMs. The two physical SIMs (different branding for each) both use IIJ, which provides a Japanese IP address/routing on NTT, aleit LTE-only, so latency is ~45ms to Tokyo. The catch with NTT is that it uses two frequency bands (B42/3500 MHz LTE, n79/4900 MHz NR) that you're not going to get on an Android sold in the US, and I'm guessing that B42 would be helpful speed-wise on that network, as it doesn't have B41. I also found one place that doesn't have cell service: a vending machine in the back of the Osaka Castle tower. Or, rather, the B8/18/19 signal is weak enough there to be unusable. Going back to 5G for a moment, I saw a fair amount of Softbank n257 in Hiroshima, as well as in some train stations between Osaka and Kobe. 4x100 MHz bandwidth, anchored by B1/3/8, with speeds sometimes exceeding 400 Mbps on the US Mobile roaming eSIM. Not quite the speeds I've seen on mmW in the States, but I've probably been on mmW for more time over the past few days than I have in the US over the past year, so I'll take it. My fastest speed test was actually on SoftBank n77 though, with 100 MHz of that plus 10x10 B8 hitting ~700 Mbps down and ~80 Mbps up with ~100ms latency...on the roaming eSIM...on the 4th floor of the hotel near Shin-Kobe station. Guessing B8 was a DAS or small cell based on signal levels, and the n77 might have been (or was just a less-used sector of the site serving the train station). I'm now 99% sure that all three providers are running DSS on band 28, and I've seen 10x10 on similar frequencies from both NTT and SoftBank IIRC, on both LTE and 5G. I also picked up one more eSIM: my1010, which is different from 1010/csl used by US Mobile's eSIM unfortunately, as it's LTE-only. On the bright side, it's cheap (10GB/7 days is like $11, and 20GB for the same period would be around $15), and can use both KDDI and SoftBank LTE. It also egresses from Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom), though latency isn't really any better than the Singapore based eSIMs. Tomorrow will include the most rural part of our journey, so we'll see how networks hold up there, and from tomorrow night on we'll be in Tokyo, so any further reports after that will be Tokyo-centric.
    • I think the push for them is adding US Mobile as a MVNO with a priority data plan.  Ultimately, making people more aware of priority would allow them (and other carriers) to differentiate themselves from MVNOs like Consumer Cellular that advertise the same coverage. n77 has dramatically reduced the need for priority service at Verizon where the mere functioning of your phone was in jeopardy a couple of years ago if you had a low priority plan like Red Pocket. Only have heard of problems with T-Mobile in parts of Los Angeles. AT&T fell in between. All had issues at large concerts and festivals, or sporting events if your carrier has no on-site rights. Edit: Dishes native 5g network has different issues: not enough sites, limited bandwidth. Higher priority would help a few. Truth is they can push phones to AT&T or T-Mobile.
