iPhone 11 Thread

Well, since Apple invited the media to Steve Jobs Theater on September 10th, it's time to make a thread.

appleinvites-800x843.jpg

Post rumors, thoughts for specs you'd like to see, if you are considering acquiring a 2019 iPhone, and any other info.

I do know that I will not be getting the 2019 iPhone. I however will consider a Series 5 Watch depending on the feature set, or may just go for a Series 4 if the price is right.

(This first post will be updated on September 10th with launch information from the event.)

Updated with better invitation photo, linked here from MacRumors website.

@Brad The Beast I sure hope they have Qualcomm modems again too. Although I won't be getting a new phone this year. Bought a new MacBook Pro 2 months ago, so I'll be skipping out this upgrade cycle. I will be getting a new Apple Watch though. Just not decided on Series 4 for a cheaper price, or go for Series 5.

After digging through https://www.apple.com/iphone/LTE/ I think it is safe to say that the new modem inside each of the 11 models is this: https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/public/us/en/documents/product-briefs/xmm-7660-brief.pdf

That is correct, the XMM7660 is what Apple is using this year. They resolved their dispute with Qualcomm too late to switch over to their modems this year.

Lets hope that it will be a far better modem than what was in the 2018 iPhone's. We will find out on the 20th. I did sign up for Priority Status, so let's see what promo's Sprint will give to existing customers.

I'm just hoping that they designed the antennas better then last years. I had the xs and it wasn't bad, I have a s10 plus now and its horrible with anything above -114. I read awhile back that samsung did change there supplier for antennas starting with the s10. I've also read that the new iPhones are using a different material for there antennas this year. Hopefully wavelength does a breakdown soon.

Carriers not doing deals this year?

T-Mobile is doing half off with trade in, and I’m still waiting for Sprint to respond on twitter, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Not sure about VZ or AT&T.

There is something, it is pretty good.

Got any details you can divulge?

sprint tried to call me earlier today, but I was busy and couldn’t answer and didn’t have time to call back. They could have just DM’d me the details.

Any reason for me to sign up for priority status?  I don't need a new phone but I might bite at the right price.  thanks

That just gets you to the front of the queue, in case there is a shortage for certain models. As a lot people will be ordering them.

After several "technical difficulty" popups sending me back a step or two, I managed to get an order placed at 7:14am...with an October 11-18 delivery 🙃 so much for Priority Status. Here's to hoping that date drops as it gets closer to release date

I was able to get in through Best Buy this afternoon and still have a delivery date of 9/20. The cool thing was they still offer installment billing and it was only $39 per month.

Has there been a article posted on here yet concerning the RF performance for the new devices?

No, but from what I've read online, it appears that the Antennas do have somewhat better performance than the XS & XS Max.

I'm on SWAC, so I can't upgrade there. Oh well.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
