RadioShack Said to Be in Talks to Sell Stores to Sprint

I wonder what the difference between assignees is. Some are general wireless and some are sprint.

The assignee is who the lease's name is in.

There are a couple inherent issues with some of the decisions that are coming from this. It's in terms of proximity of Store within a Store's to existing Corporate Stores.

Here are the stores that are located just within the Las Vegas Market. There is 1 Radio Shack that is less than 1/4 mile from a corp Sprint Store. I think it's too close, but that is just my opinion.

This may or may not apply to the instance you are referring to but, in many cases the physical distance between two stores means nothing. For example, at a busy intersection, it makes sense to have a stand-alone store.  If at that intersection there is a shopping mall, it makes sense to have some retail presence inside that shopping mall, too.   I've seen this example more than once in Phoenix.  Two stores, less than 1/4 mile from one another.

I've seen Verizon stores across the street from one another. Probably has to do with traffic flow and what not...maybe a Geographer could help explain why.

If assignee is General Wireless, the specific RadioShack store is bought by other company not sprint.

The Radio Shack is my town is listed on that document with the assignee as General Wireless and store type as Standalone. Does that mean it's not going to become a Sprint corporate store? Or will it be a Sprint store without the Radio Shack co-branding?

Also, remember that Radio Shack stores already sold Sprint service. Existing Radio Shack stores being kept that are near Sprint stores may be because they have really good Sprint numbers already. Sprint would want to keep any and all Radio Shack stores that already have good Sprint numbers. Closing those down and hoping the customers materialize at a nearby existing Sprint store is not a great idea. It makes good sense to keep all good lines of business open.

With that reasoning, I can understand that.

We have 2 corporate stores in San Diego that is 1/4 mile from each other. The reason behind it is one used to be a Nextel store but lots of traffic, so they kept it. When one store is very busy they would route people to the other store. Works out pretty good.

I'm still fuzzy on this.  Are the "General Wireless" assignees in the list going to become Sprint Shacks, or Sprint Stores, or something else entirely?  I've re-read this entire thread and still can't figure it out.  If someone knows, please enlighten us.

Also, does anyone know what the actual branding of the Radio Shack conversions will be?  With they remain Radio Shack with a Sprint department, will they be re-branded (as "Sprint Shack", as in my above intentionally silly example, or something more serious), will they become simply "Sprint", or do they await some other more mysterious fate?

The suspense is killing me!

1. The WSJ exhibit A should be its own thread. That was a great read.

2. New Mexico is getting 19 stores. Half and half between general or Sprint.

Gallup is getting 3, Albuquerque is getting 4, Clovis is getting 2. Those are the highlights for NM.

I believe that Assignee indicates the name that will be on the storefront, Sprint or General Wireless.  Sprint assigned stores will only sell Sprint.  General Wireless assigned stores will sell other carriers too.  General Wireless with Store Within a Store, means Sprint will open up shop inside the General Wireless store.  General Wireless with Standalone means Sprint will not have a presence in the store, but General Wireless may still sell Sprint service as a Sprint Authorized Retailer like they are with their other brands.

This is my current conclusion based on the information I have seen to date.

I think "Store within a Store" means the location is inside a big mall. A standalone means it located in a stripe mall or just a standalone storefront.

I know enough of these Store within a Store and Standalone locations to know that's not the case.

Store within a Store is Sprint taking 1/3rd of the retail space of the "Radio Shack" floor.

regarding multiple stores within short distances of each other;

it may very well be that a previous well performing and/or better location radioshack store being kept open near a legacy sprint store, where they plan to re-consolidate the sprint store into the RS location at a later point in time (ie when leases up etc).

In indy there is one going in across the street from one of the busiest stores in the midwest. Also the first round of these stores are opening april 10th.
