Netgear 4G LTE Router Gateway/New Plans

Surprised I haven't seen anyone post about this - unless I've missed it.

Sprint and Netgear have come out with a 4G LTE Router with 4 ethernet ports as well as 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz Wifi.  The thing that I find most interesting is that they've also added a new data-only plan: 30GB for $109.99.

Here's a link to the Sprint press release: http://newsroom.sprint.com/news-releases/sprints-first-router-to-bring-sprint-spark-to-business-customers-netgear-lte-gateway-6100d.htm?previousArticle=11318&nextArticle=2513&gotoArt=%2Fnews-releases%2Fsprints-first-router-to-bring-sprint-spark-to-business-customers-netgear-lte-gateway-6100d.htm .

Thoughts?  I'd certainly be interested for this at my house, with no cable or DSL available here.  I wonder how its reception is compared to a hotspot.

I was talking about it in another thread, but I didn't create a new one to discuss it.  So this is fine.  :)

If it's anything like the slightly older Verizon version of this then it will be pretty good. I have a customer that is about 2.5 miles away from the tower with a -65ish signal. We were getting around 20 - 30mbps down and 15ish up. He does have direct line of sight. I believe that it is also a Sprint site but the last I checked it wasn't upgraded yet(corporate market).

Has anyone tried this out yet?  I'm somewhat intrigued by it.

I actually went in to see if I could look at it, my usual store (which is not a corporate store) said they will not be getting it in for at least another week or two. But my rep said that it has already sparked interest in the store.

My only gripe is that there should be one more data option thrown in where if 12 GB is not enough but 30 GB is too much (or is too expensive).

The router itself at good specs and the best part is that it is the next gen AC router which means (if anyone doesn't know) it will be great now, but even better when more AC equipped products are out making everything faster than N routers/products. I do also like the fact that it has two fairly large antennas, so range with this thing should be better than most.

This might be the future replacement of my Sierra 3G/4G Wimax Modem and my Cradlepoint MBR95 router. I will post any updates if I get to look at.

Maybe you guys can answer a few questions: 1) can this be purchased outright without a contract/service plan? 2) if I bought it outright, can I just use it with my cable modem, and possibly just add a data plan on the fly if the cable ever goes down?

I can't answer number 1 for you yet, but to answer number 2 - if you're looking to plug your cable modem in there, it won't work as there is no WAN port to plug in any incoming source. The only thing it does have are the standard 4 LAN ports and USB ports.

Here is the link to Sprint for it, they have some decent photos of it.

Don't know about how it can be purchased, but I also agree I think there should be a plan in between 12 GB and 30GB - maybe 20GB for $95 ?

That's what I was thinking too, some where between 18GB-22GB of data.

It's a pretty big jump for some people to go from 12GB to 30GB and pay the extra $$ per month.

BUT! I do I like that it's Spark capable, which means when it's here and done we could see top general cable speed, or if the 50-60 mbps is possible - business class cable speeds.

There does appear to be a wan port on the back side on the right, next to the 4 lan ports.

Also, the price is listed as 0-yr so to answer the other question, it appears to be non-contract so I would assume it would be used 'on demand' or recurring on-demand.

Probably a lot like the data plans for tablets.

It appears to be capable of using Fixed Broadband for backup or as primary internet service if the manual is to be believed. Check page 65 under Gateway Settings, under the header of Dual WAN Settings.

Edit:

Available options are:

  • Always use Mobile Broadband connection
  • Use WAN Ethernet with Mobile Backup on Failure
  • Always use Fixedline Broadband Connection.

good catch, I hadn't checked for the manual.

Looks like a decent choice for those who need either backup or primary mobile broadband.

The only thing I can see missing is more advanced nat port mapping settings, like remapping different wan ports to different internal lan ports (ie map incoming port 4444 to 3389 rdp).

(which has been a problem with netgear routers the last few years)

I wish I knew more about that, but I'm unfamiliar with port mapping.

And risk all the nonsense that just happened with Millenicom happening again? No thanks.

Millenicom was using BMI's service and providing unlimited data. I guess Millenicom use too much and get terminated.

Buy the device outright and BYOD it to bmi.net

You'll get 30GB for $79.99

Looking on the bmi.net website the "unlimited" plan (which says don't use more than 30GB) is $99.99 and not $79.99.  That puts this only $10/mo less than the Sprint 30GB plan they announced with this device.

Yes. On their website it is $99.99. but if you use your own device not theirs, it is 79.99

Yep, I called them and they confirmed that a 30GB plan (he didn't call it unlimited) was $79.99 if you bring your own device.  And he stated that the new Netgear LTE 6100D would be supported.  There is no contract, but there is a one-time $50 activation fee.  The local Sprint store told me they have the new router for $199.

I'm very interested now.  My only concern is picking up LTE here before LTE800 goes live.  I get a somewhat weak 3G signal now on my old 3G broadband card with an external antenna I have mounted outside.

Tested this out and I had a poor LTE signal with the device. The LED on the router showed one bar of LTE. I performed a speed test on it and it hovered around 2 Mbps while on my phone it averaged around 4-5 Mbps.

Tested my roku on it and it had a lot of connection issues more so than what I get with my 3G Overdrive (wimax never made it to the towers around me).

That's not a good sign.  I would have expected this device to have better reception than a phone and was hoping for even better reception than the Zing and other mobile hotspots due to the external antennas.  Of course, I don't know if the external antennas are for the Wi-Fi or LTE/3G signal, or one for each.

I will probably still give this a try myself and if it doesn't pan out then just return it.

Thanks for posting your experience with it.

I was REALLY hoping that this would be awesome, but now that I read that I'm kind of disappointed. Living right next to a tower, I already get a great signal. Than add on bigger external antennas, I could have a -40dbm signal or better...  :(

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
