It's starting to affect me!

This picture was posted to my facebook page today! They were posting about the clouds forming a State of Texas outline. All I could look at was the cell tower and wondering who's it was.

When I see this picture, I see God parting the clouds to check out if upgrades have been completed.

Welcome to my world. I walk the streets now looking at panels and trying to figure out who's on that site.

My girlfriend thinks I'm weird.

Thankfully mine embraces my nerdiness :)

Do not worry. Just keep going down this path. Soon enough, you will no longer have a job nor a girlfriend who thinks you are weird. Then, you can walk the streets looking at panels full time.

:P

When my GF finds me messing with her phone she just assumes that I'm checking signal/technical stuff.

I think I should be offended by this?!

This is too funny, before I read what you typed all I was looking at was the tower. I would have never noticed the shape of texas if you didn't mention it. LOL

Hmm, interesting. I guess if you are a jealous boyfriend, you should become or pretend to be a wireless signal nerd. Then, you can check her handset for illicit SMS, and she will think that you are just geeking on the engineering screens.

AJ, that the funniest thing I've read all day! I'm on the East Coast and I've been up a while too.

In the words of Linda Richmand "I'm feeling a little verklempt" after looking at that picture.

kckid, it does reminds me of a song:

"Some may boast of prowess bold, of the school they think so grand..."

My two year old points out every cell tower to me while driving as "Big tower daddy, big tower!!!!"

You're a good daddy! Teaching him the ways of the Force.

Jim Gaffigan:

Explaining things to my kids makes me realize how little I know.

Recently, my son pointed to an antenna and said, "Look, Daddy, a stick!"

I said, "Actually, that's an antenna."

"What's an antenna?"

"It's a stick, a silver stick."

My 4yr old boy asks me about what the towers do and I explain it to him the best I can that I understand and a 4yr old can comprehend. It is tough finding 14 different ways to say the same thing because his next question is always, "Why?"

Oh yeah, that's normal.

We'll be walking down the street sometimes holding hands, and I'll be looking at a building, and pointing out sites to her.

That's a Sprint site, you can see the radio heads on the back of the panels.

That appears to be a Clearwire site, you can see the little white dome which is for microwave.

The rest of my family tends to humor me, even occasionally pointing out cell sites on road trips. Then again, I'm the reason they're saving a fair chunk of change on cellular service...and still get LTE :)

I've only been a member of this site for a short time, and my wife is pretty much over the whole thing. All she keeps telling me now is, "I'm so sick of hearing about LTE this and LTE that." ...and, "I'll be so glad when you get that damn phone." :P

Needless to say...this site is addictive! And I'll never look at a cell tower the same again. ;)

I still can't recognize who is on any given site :( though at least I can spot them much better than before! That count for something right? :)

You know, I think I have a picture of you trying to recognize carriers on cell sites. Yeah, here it is...

    • A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.
    • Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.
    • Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
    • Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.
    • What is the cheapest way to try Dish's wireless network?  Over the past year I've seen them add their equipment to just about every cell site here, I'm assuming just go through Boost's website?  What phones are Dish native?
