High Voltage Transmission Line NV Install

I believe this is H003XC250 in Houston at the West Park Toll Road and Beltway 8. Sorry for the crappy pictures, I was driving 75 MPH and held down the shutter on the my EVO LTE. Wish I had my DSLR and wasn't driving.

 

Always wondered how they worked on antennas a top transmission lines. Not for the faint of heart, but I wouldn't expect the gentlemen who do this for a living to be scared of much. I'm especially fascinated with this as I am an Electrical Engineer (Don't mess around with HV though). Because of this site, all I do on my commute now is stare at cell towers and power lines.

I was in the verge of leaving sprint -- but now that I am seeing results I just might stick with it -- I don't know what I would do with myself if was wasn't watching for bars/speeds/3G indicators (someday 4G) etc... Whenever NV is complete it will be boring!

I would think this type of install requires a special crew that does only Installs on HV Towers. You would need to be certfied and have special gear. One wrong move and your Toast! Burnt Toast.

LONG ago (50 years?) my dad worked on putting in some big electric towers/power lines like those. He didn't talk much about those times, just if you a tool slips never try to catch it just climb down and get it.

I agree! But, have no fear, when NV is complete, then we have NV 2.0 to entice us!

Helicopters and cranes are used to 'fly' the equipment in, but the crew still has to climb to reach the equipment as well as run the feedlines/hybrid cables.

 

I've only every built rooftop sites and they have their own set of challenges, but I've seen them all.

I know when they were taking down the old microwave tower a few blocks away I could see them out of my office window. They would pick the guys up in a basket with the crane and place them on the top of the tower as they took piece by piece down of the structure. Cheaters!

Yes, and ATT was in a bad need of some panels on it for the downtown area. Probably one of the very very few that I can think of where AT&T has poor coverage and Sprint does not.

I've seen quite a few long lines set ups being used for cell antennas. The ones I've seen have left the old microwave antennas intact though.

This entire site is gone. All the supports were cut out and dug out down to build a new basement. Supposed to be for generators and new switching facility from my what I was told.

On my commute I stare for cell towers but in some of the more "well to do" townships and localities that I pass through on my commute from Philadelphia to NYC and back everyday they are stealth and quite a few Cell-Pines along Amtrak's Northeast Corridor in NJ.
