eHRPD improves pings in most instances, because the LTE core is faster to process data packets than the MSC, and also the routing to the internet backbone is improved.

This is where I get confused, and you've probably answered this before. If it's done through an LTE Core, then does that mean that there are LTE panels? If not, how does it process data through a core that is not there? Or is it all down through just software, on the same old CDMA panels?

In all seriousness, here is a comprehensive understanding of eHRPD:   For the most part, eHRPD is EVDO-A. Both are 3G CDMA technology. EVDO is a High Rate Packet Data technology, and eHRPD is Evol

Never mind I just answered my own question lol :P

 

Just so everyone else is clear, the 4G core is not at the site. Sprint has over two dozen 4G cores around the country. Each site is connected to the 4G cores via backhaul. At the 4G core the data is processed and goes off the Sprint network out into the internet backbone to go wherever in the world your data packets are destined to go to .

Your guess is good as mine. But my guess is testing. I think they turned it on in several markets last week to see how it was working. Then turned it off when they concluded the testing. But I do not know for certain,

Thats what I've experienced the last 2 mornings in Charlotte. eHRPD early in the morning till around lunch and then back to EVDO.

eHRPD has resulted in some excellent speeds and ping times. ;)

From the tower that has been literally broken for almost 2 yrs straight. I miss the Alltel Evdo they had us on.

 

I still think it is bigzeto over there across the street from me with Linux distro torrents running on 3 or 4 hotspot devices.

I read 3GS and it had me thinking iPhone 3GS. I had to rack my brain for 30 seconds to figure out what you meant. I've never seen the Galaxy S3 shortened that way, only GS3

You are right.. Galaxy S3... I put the 3 first by accident... Love this phone!!!!

So I will ask the question and likely get slapped down but I'll ask anyway. Typically after seeing eHRPD when do you see LTE? I know there is not a solid answer but just from what has been reported on the site?

There is no correlation at all. There are some markets that have eHRPD in part of them (like the Georgia market) and they will not get LTE until next year. Some had LTE go live a few days before eHRPD. There is just no way to take an eHRPD live date and guess when LTE will show up. Sorry. :cry:

he gets steady 2mbps 3G across his general travels and has a Sprint tower in his side yard, so I think his experience will be much better than us city folk trudging along at <100kbps... ;)

I wouldn't quite characterize it that way. In my rural town, we tend to have 1Mbps speeds. However, most of Santa Fe and ABQ is under 500kbps. I just know where the 2Mbps sites are.

Haha, very funny. I rarely use data anymore while at work as it's just too painful. I'm a Cardinals fan though, so I'm going to activate one of my Wimax devices tomorrow so I can listen to the game while working at my desk. Thanks protection site! B)

I've still have it now as well. I couldnt pick it up at all on the way home yesterday afternoon, airplane cycled it and all. Last night around 10 I just happened to look at it and it showed eHRPD and I was connected to my WIFI. I didnt think it would show that on WIFI ???

No. The backhaul is for the NV equipment. There's no point in hooking up the legacy equipment to the new backhaul when they are just going to take it down in a few months. Like I've said before, that would be like stopping at the mechanic shop to get a tune-up on the way to the junk yard. The tower crews have enough to do already.

Just means the traffic is being routed to the 4G core. Could be new backhaul or legacy backhaul

There have been a few instances where eHRPD has caused me to lose data connectivity. I had to actually go into the ##DATA# menu and disable eHRPD and restart the phone to get any data. For some reason, the signal will be full, then none, then full, then none while it is trying to connect to data. Once I turn off eHRPD and restart, it comes up and immediately connects to EvDo Rev. A fine.

 

That happened just last night while driving up to Suffolk, VA where I'm currently at.

      Kind of amazing that T-Mobile is still holding onto that speed title despite Verizon all but killing off lowband 5G on their network. While Verizon is mostly being evaluated on mmWave and C-band performance, T-Mobile and AT&T's average 5G speeds include their massive lowband 5G networks that are significantly slower.

      Yup. Very true. We were originally on an Everything Data 1500 Plan, which got Unlimited Minutes thanks to Marcelo's "Loyalty Benefits" offer. We then switched to Unlimited Freedom (with the Free HD add-on that Sprint originally wanted $20/month per line for.... remember that?) because the pricing was better with "iPhone for Life", vs. the "Loyalty Credit" for staying on a Legacy Plan. After that, I ran the numbers and switched us over to Sprint MAX, especially for the international travel benefits. There's absolutely no reason for us to switch to Go5G Plus or Go5G Next if we're going to do BYOD by purchasing from Apple/Samsung/Google directly as we've been doing. These new plans aren't priced for current customers to switch to. They're priced for new customers, where they throw in a free line, etc. It's gone from "Uncarrier" to "Carrier". What a shame.

      Strange business model that they keep around all these pricing plans. 1000s of plans per carrier is reportedly not uncommon.  Training customer support must be a nightmare. Even MVNOs have legacy plans. A downside of their contract mentality I guess. Best to change contracts during a recession. But then all carriers try to squeeze out legacy plan benefits as they grow old.

      Everything "Uncarrier" is becoming "Carrier" again. Because of the Credit Limit that T-Mobile put on our account for no reason at all (and wouldn't change/update the last time I checked all the way up to the CEO), I don't plan on buying/upgrading our iPhones through T-Mobile. I'm going through Apple directly. Looks like I'll be going through Google and Samsung directly for our other lines for upgrades. Also, we're staying on Sprint Max given the ridiculous pricing for Go5G Plus. On Sprint Max, we currently pay for our Plan: $260 for 7 Voice Lines $25 for two Wearable Lines. (One is $10/Month. The other is $15/Month because the AutoPay discount only applies up to 8 lines.) Total: $285/Month vs. Go5G Plus (Per the Broadband Facts "nutrition label" on the T-Mobile Website): https://www.t-mobile.com/commerce/cell-phone-plans $360 - ($5 AutoPay Discount x 7 Voice Lines) = $325 The Watch Plans show as either $12/Month or $15/Month: https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/affordable-data-plans/smartwatches So this is about the same for the wearables as what we're paying now. Overall, it's quite more than we're paying now to switch plans. Ridiculous....
