Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Thursday, March 8, 2012 - 1:00 PM MST

Suffer from indoor coverage issues? Need a personal Sprint femtocell to supplant your indoor Sprint coverage? Enter in the Sprint Airave Access Point.

Sprint is running a new pilot program. Telesales will be letting new customers know they can get a free Airave if they have indoor coverage issues. Customers will be directed to sprint.com/airaveaccesspoint to order. Sprint has created a special team to manage this program.

There may be limits and certain terms and conditions that may apply. Established customers may also have some luck getting in on this promotion, even though they are not the intended candidates.

Feel free to sound off in the comments section below if you are able to score one of the units. Share your experiences. Good luck!

EDIT: Just to clarify...yes, Sprint has given away Airaves in the past. Their Retentions Dept. did have authority to give them out. But this is a new promotion with the Airave product. Now Sprint is dedicating staff specifically to this new promotion and being more proactive to customer concerns with indoor coverage issues, not reactive as a last resort before a customer leaves.

We already have had several Facebook fans and S4GRU Members post that they called and was able to get one.

I know people who have tried to take them to a workplace, but unless they work in IT, it usually doesn't work out for them. Getting it set up on a corporate network, with firewalls, etc. can be tough.

^ Definitely the post of the day!!!

One more experiment I'll try. At my cabin Sprint signal is NEARLY non-existent. On a window, my phone picks up Zero bars (the absolute limit of connection) which can't even send texts but it is something. So I bought an amplifier and it works great for what I want but the range is limited (10 ft away = 1 bar, right next to it = full bars). So, I might use a homeplug system to use Sprint 3G to make more Sprint 3G.

This could cause a problem with the phone connecting to the airrave instead of the tower / overamplification but I'm sure with some clever ingenuity I could make it work.

Does anyone know if this unit has a removable antenna so I could split the output to both sides of a steel wall?

I know I have no idea, hopefully someone with a clue will come along and answer your question.

what about using one in an area that is not technically covered by Sprint but is roaming???? I have a family member that is at school where Sprint is not available on campus but is a mile away... Could he setup a FEMO in his dorm room???

You will need to see what the college rules are about "excessive data use" policy (which when I was in college, wasn't what I call excessive, lol) We had a monthly limit, after which we got slowed down to dial-up speeds. Also we were not allowed routers and needed to register our computer.

Now things might have changed in the couple years since I graduated, and the college might not be as strict as Penn State, but I am sure there are rules of some sort.

I just ordered one because where I just moved to has pretty low coverage; I usually get a bar inside the house in the upstairs, but downstairs it can barely get a roaming signal and drop calls like it was my business. (Full bricked house with a poured wall basement in the middle of nowhere... standard cell service here)

To help anyone else that might be thinking of getting an Airave. I'll tell you how it went for me: The person helping me had no problem getting me set up with one, but I was surprised to hear that it is set up as an extra line on your account even though its free of charge, you get taxed on it (couple bucks at the most), and if it is not plugged in for 30 days you have to return it or pay a $140 non return fee.

Now i am willing to pay the extra tax (hell, I was thinking of purchasing one and paying a small fee before I heard here on S4GRU that I could get it for free) but I hope those details help anyone else make a decision. I'll write back at the end of the week when it arrives and let ya'll know how it performs.

I finally got an AIrave ordered. I couldn't get one because there was a tower issue in my area and they weren't able to determine the signal strength issue until that was fixed. Took 27 days btw for them to fix a tower... seems like a long time to me.

Anyway, I remember reading someplace that if you are using an Airave, the minutes don't count against your quota of minutes. I have unlimited talk, but if this is the case I could most likely go to a lower minute plan since I work at home and do a lot of calls from there.

Does anyone know if this is the case? I didn't want to ask the rep while he was signing me up for the Airave.

Also, he said that since they have had a rush on them, it may take two or three weeks to get mine. Robert, seems like you post has had quite an effect on the Airave availability :), which is great. I wish I would have known about this several years ago.

Thanks

There is so much conflicting information out there on whether you voice minutes on an Airave count against your usage on your plan or not. You will need to contact Sprint for a definitive answer. Sorry for the delay in my response, I was on vacation.

I attempted to get one of these and was told I had to purchase the device and pay a $25 a month access charge. It was $119 for the Airave and then a monthly access charge. Anyway to beat around the bush and get one without being charged? If I stand in the street my service works, if I go in my home, my service is dropped to a bar if I am lucky. I just hate to give up Sprint, as this is my only complaint about their service is at my home. Any input?

I would threaten to leave. Retentions will give you an Airave for free.
