  1. Nice, good catch I wonder if those are for another carrier. The pic I took was definitely sprint.
  2. Seems to max out around 115mbit in anandtech testing
  3. Pretty sure it's not an antenna - just some sort of ventilation pipe. Sorry for the horrible photos - just a quick grab.
  4. Dan, can you ask Sprint about LTE connectivity issues that the HTC EVO 4G LTE has been having? themuffinman's experience is well outlined below:
  5. Hopefully Sprint continues to improve SDC performance. User "e911com" over at hofo seems to have some good info on SDC issues. http://www.howardfor...e-Duramax/page3 According to e911com Sprint Direct Connect outage was related to a maintenance update that went wrong
  6. I don't know why sprint can't communicate these issues to customers. I am pretty sure you are only one of a handful of people that gets LTE and has both phones - nobody else knows. The other issue seems to be Sprint's own LTE coverage maps - they don't seem to be that accurate (3G likely overpowering 4G, which Robert did a great job covering). In the grand scheme of things, they should have soft launched the markets, figure out the bugs, and then hard launch so regular folks wouldn't be so confused.
  7. Impressive that the EVO has no problem hitting over 90mbit over wifi... not many phones can do that. Over at anandtech, they show the EVO and the One X hitting over 100mbit. While not really that functional, or practical, I suppose if you did a lot of local music syncing over wifi it would be rather fast. Note that I am connected to 5GHz wifi with 40MHz channel width configured.
  8. You asked, he gave an answer. You have a choice in the matter - hence the term "sponsor". Sponsors on this website are nice enough to keep it free of advertisement for users like you (and me). It's pretty darn nice not to see a bunch of banners everywhere. Instead of quipping back at him saying "Ever heard of student loans?" it's probably better saying "ah, that's really nice of the people that support this site to keep it advertisement free - I can't support but I appreciate the people that do."
  9. But if you walk up to cambridge street and hook onto Sprint's antennas above whole foods, you will hit 2mbit+ all day long. Even the antenna above the giant tea kettle at Government Center seems to perform really well. I am guessing that the location at quincy market doesn't have new backhaul yet? Whatever is it, it was disappointing, heh. Typical sprint speeds elsewhere in downtown Boston: Took me about 8 tries before I could complete a speedtest. Speeds at this locations have been on a death spiral for a while.
  10. It's going to be spent on trying to get a spectrum swap (my guess). That's their only hope.
  11. Many parts of Boston have really slowed down as of late. Pretty much all of downtown seems to have become just about unusable. Not sure what's going on... but it's become so slow, I can no longer stream radio, at all, which is annoying. Personally, I would rather be annoyed for a month or two while they upgrade, but I am sure there are countless sprint users that have no idea why their experience is so horrible. I am just glad LTE is on the way.
  12. so I found this tower that is supposedly broadcasting 3G/4G, located downtown at Quincy Market. Sadly, 3G speeds were only so-so (600-1300kbps) and 4G was not to be found. I checked LTE record and nothing was there and no eHRPD available, just EVDO Rev A. This is also the first Sprint network vision antenna I have seen without the RRU under it. Maybe they mounted it on the roof? Or maybe no RRU for this location?
  13. I am betting the iPhone 5 will support CDMA on ESMR and LTE on PCS.
  14. Dish has said that they are going to build out an LTE network, but that seems like a ploy to just get the FCC to approve the S-Band for terrestrial use. If they did, I think it would be nice upside for sprint, since Sprint would be the best position to host Dish's network. Not sure why AT&T wouldn't be allowed to buy S-Band? It's the perfect counter to Verizon's AWS play. We will have LTE: Verizon with nationwide upper 700MHz C block + AWS AT&T with lower 700MHz B block + S-Band Sprint with ESMR + PCS + ERS/BRS The only national carrier that won't have LTE on sub-1000MHz is T-Mobile, which is sort of a bummer. I think to be competitive, you need sub-1000MHz spectrum for coverage + higher spectrum for capacity. It's the model everyone seems to be moving towards. For AT&T, the S-Band is the perfect fit. I'm probably missing a few logistical reasons why AT&T wouldn't be interested in S-Band.
  15. I really liked the "mock site" capabilities that are built into the standards. I remember rumblings of how it was impossible to have handoffs between Clearwire TD-LTE and Sprint FD-LTE due to different networks, etc. They really make it very clear that they can have handoffs in the milliseconds even though they are on different networks. Pretty darn cool.
  16. It's pretty sad how ignorant that guy is. There are other sell-side analysts that are much more bullish and see no problems with the 5x5 rollout on the G-Block to start. The part I don't really get is - why does nobody poop on AT&T's spectrum plan? Outside of Dish's spectrum, AT&T has little options. Can you think of any logistical reason of why AT&T wouldn't buy Dish's S-Band once it gets approved for terrestrial use?
  17. I know my local sprint store is now plugged into S4GRU.com - I wonder how much info is given to customers from this site, heh.
  18. Robert has said that all but a handful of iDEN sites are being shut down. He mentioned that Sprint had originally planned to turn them all off, now they are up to a handful (around a 100 if I remember right?). Either way, iDEN sites are going away. I can't wait until iDEN is dead.
  19. Apple released a software upgrade that literally just turned a 3G icon into a 4G icon so people could say "wow my phone has 4G on AT&T". Nothing actually changed except the little icon. As WiWavelength has just explained, it's not "4G". The biggest issue with AT&T's HPSA network is that the speeds are extremely variable depending on how loaded an area is.
  20. There is a thread - the S4GRU sponsor thread with completed network vision towers.
  21. No device, outside of the tri-hotspot, supports both LTE and wimax. I would rather have a phone that will eventually get LTE vs. what's available now with wimax.
  22. I was trying to think of a senario where you would have an AAV that was not based off fiber. I couldn't think of any connection that would provide 250mbit+ of throughput without ethernet to fiber. So, what % of total sites are AAV/Fiber vs. Microwave? Are the sites that are straight fiber in the highest demand locations or is it just random? Also, I've always wondered - does Sprint have any of their own fiber run to any sites?
  23. I agree, it's interesting to see people use the 4G LTE maps provided by Sprint to see if they had 4G LTE coverage. The maps would show they have 4G LTE coverage but their phones don't connect. I am all for rolling out markets as quickly as possible, but the communication has been horrible.
  24. Thx for the update! Glad that eHRPD has made it to mass!!!
