Star Wars The Force Awakens Discussion

OK, so I'm a Star Wars fan and am excited about the new movie but my wife rolls her eyes at me anytime I mention it.

I figured there might be some fans of kindred spirit (or Force) here that would like discuss the movie.

So who thinks the female character is Han and Leia's daughter?

I want to show my 10 year old son the other movies before we watch the new one.  Should I show him episodes 4-6 first or start at episode 1? Or skip 1-3 altogether?

I heard that there's a heavily modified version of episodes 1 to 3 that summarizes the movie rather well, and also takes out the filler parts.  I believe that may be the best option for your son.  But, if you decide to go vanilla, I'd strongly suggest watching the movies starting with episode 1. Minus JarJar Binks and other small issues, the entire movie series from episodes 1 to 6 was enjoyable for me.

Actually, something on my bucket list is to watch all 6 of the first movies in one day.  It'll be glorious!

EDIT: Found the heavily modified version, it's called The Phantom Edit.

I prefer to go old school.

I don't know if I could carve out enough time in my busy schedule to watch all 6 in one day.  I'll be lucky to get a couple in on a weekend.

There really is no question.  Start with the originals and then go back to fill in the story with the newer episodes.

It is only in this way that your son can share the true misery of Episode 1.

Thats what I'm leaning towards. Might as well let him experience good Star Wars before JarJar.

My son is now 7, he took a huge interest in Star Wars about a year ago.  I started with Ep4-6 on DVD (ripped from the widescreen laser disc) then Ep1-3.  He's watched a little of the Clone Wars show, but loves Rebels.

We also have the DVD release of 4-6 with the bonus disc that is what he usually watches nowadays.

Can't wait for December!!!

While I'm looking forward to the release, I have to be honest that with Disney basically un-canonizing literally all of the EU, my hopes of eventually seeing Zahn's Heir to the Empire trilogy brought to the big screen are all but totally vaporized, and thus the one thing that would have truly potentially excited me as much if not more than the magic of the original trilogy from when I was younger.

I can understand wanting to do away with some, maybe even most of the EU, but I had hoped one day before I died someone might translate that trilogy to cinema somehow.  Recasts of the original would have been a given to be sure, but that's the only thing that truly matched the strength and magic of the original trilogy for me.

This "Star Wars" nerd thread is the virtual version of this queue outside the Ziegfeld Theatre, just waiting…for me to poop on...

I always loved this part of this episode of Conan O'Brian.
