gogo inflight internet

Funny this shows up today on here! I just flew from Detroit, MI to Charlotte, NC and used Gogo. Did a Speedtest and the ping was 5 ms! Download speed was typical of 3G, 0.85 Mbps, and upload was 0.43 Mbps. Kinda slow, but given that they are upgrading to EvDo Rev.B, should be better. I don't see why they just don't go to LTE...

what frequency do they use and are they the same size antennas as normal cell tower.

Gogo's spectrum is adjacent to Cellular 850 MHz, so free space path loss is very similar between the two. The difference is that ground to air service operates very nearly in free space.

Having the 5ms ping indicates that they could be using a transparent proxy on the plane.

I use one at home, it reduces the ping time on the speedtest app on my android device to around 7ms from 30 to 40ms.

Gogo in flight is awesome, but it's just a little too pricey in my opinion.

I will offer a counter opinion. Keep Gogo a little bit "pricey." That is just good resource management.

I have used Gogo only once but probably will use it again anytime that I have the option. I have and will continue to use it for in flight productivity, not in flight entertainment.

So, price it high enough that the "Joe Blow" iOS device crowd decides to stick with locally stored content and does not suck up my bandwidth with needless entertainment activity.

This is definitely a valid point, I just wish the service was a lot more stable than what it is. I have used their service quite a few times on various airlines and I wasn't happy at all. Admittedly I haven't used it with in the last year or so, hopefully things have improved.

I used GoGo on Alaska Airlines quite a bit in 2009 in my old job. It worked better than Row 44 did on Southwest. I used to fly every week as a Hotel Developer. Since I have taken this job in New Mexico a few years ago, I fly only once per year.

I use GoGo. I fly American and it's on most of the flights I'm on. You can sometimes get codes off the web for free use. I then use google talk to chat or play my silly games. Now that American is outsourcing all they're wide body maintenance to china. 1. My old mans is forced to retire early so I can't fly anytime I want any more. :-( 2. Not sure I wanna fly on airplanes service by someone that's not regulated by the FAA, not that all flights use a wide body plane but the Company has proven to be garbage and I wouldn't give them any money anymore. Hope my new airline has GoGo.

  • 1 month later...

Just used gogo on United last night from jfk to sfo, kinda. Used my s3 to look how much and it was too pricey. So I just browsed the free websites like Groupon.com and LivingSocial . com. Then I was gonna read the last articles I downloaded on Google currents. Unfortunately I didn't have anything for like 4 days. Tried to press "sync now", and surprisingly it synced all my subscriptions. No images but I was able to read articles the rest of the entire flight. So if you have an upcoming flight and forget to sync currents pre-flight, try it, it might work. It even let me load the Play store. Didn't let me download anything but I could see app descriptions and which of my apps had updates. No images again. So maybe some Google servers are free also.

  • 2 weeks later...

You get 12 gogo flight coupons included with new chromebook purchases.

Is it only video streaming that doesn't work?

What about google talk text messaging or google hangouts? Something to pass the time.

I used the ebay app on a nexus7 a few weeks ago on a Delta flight (horrible airline, not for people over 5 ft tall), was quite speedy.

I'm going to find the same flight as AJ and plays games like farmville!

    • The DAS at LGA Terminal B actually has n41 at 100+20, but if you are deprioritized, good luck on the busy days, as all the bands are congested, even B41 and n41, with data being worse than 128kbps international roaming. It has SA active for n41 as well. The L train tunnel is actually 80+20 for n41, with SA n41 active. Speeds aren't anything compared to Philadelphia's DAS system that has n41 though. The gig+ upgrades are expanding, as eNBs 894588 (Sprint convert site) and 55987 can both pass 1 Gbps now. Clocked nearly 1.3Gbps on eNB 55987 today.

    • Yup 80MHz C-band + 40MHz DoD for a total of 120MHz. They should be pretty well setup post-clearance. — — — — — Famous Verizon site on Atlantic referenced in this reddit post got moved to the top of the building next door. — — — — — Also looks like I mapped a T-Mobile oDAS node eNB 347812 in Brooklyn Heights. Streetview shows it as one of the CC nodes with no antenna on top as of May 2022 but this specific eNB was first mapped this month. I didn't notice that I mapped it until I got home but the range on it is significantly greater than the normal "antenna-less" nodes T-Mobile deploys. I'm wondering if it got upgraded to the new 5G oDAS design but I won't be able to check it out until next weekend.
    • I didn't know they had access to 80 MHz of c-band that does change some things then once that's online
    • While I've been loath to update my Samsung devices past the May 2022 update to keep the Band Selection tool, I note that it looks like Android 14 is going to add Timing Advance for NR to the API.  (Was looking today as I have another Verizon A42 5G now that I'm going to unlock for T-Mobile, and wanted to figure out if I should let it update or not.)  Since I can technically make band changes from *#73#, on the A42 5Gs, I can probably live without the Band Selection tool if a later Android version adds something useful like TA values. I assume SCP will be updated to support that once it becomes publicly available.  The real question is whether or not the phones will support it.  My S21FE and A42 5G devices do on LTE, but I know the S22 and the A32 5G do not support it even on LTE, providing just zero in that field. - Trip
