If you are too close to the tower, you may be out of the broadcast range of the signal. Think of it like baseball. The person next to bat stands to the back of the person batting so they aren't in the projected path of a hit ball

That makes sense. I'm still under the impression work is being done on band 41 on the tower though because Sprint's coverage map doesn't even show spark for where I live, but I do get band 41.

Maps haven't really been updated to reflect 8T8R Band 41 anywhere, so that's not surprising.

So a Tie for the big 2 and Sprint in 4th but a large jump forward from 1st half 2014.

Overall score from 86.9 to 94.4 

Average DL from 2.4 to 8.4

 

Most importantly what I was hearing from friends turned out to be true. T-Mobile is slowing down here: "T-Mobile’s median download speed decreased from 17.6 Mbps to 13.4 Mbps." Still faster than Sprint but interesting nonetheless. Also AT&T has sped up while Verizon has lost the 1st place rank in speed which was unexpected. Many of my AT&T friends complained about slower service in some areas.

Noticed an increase in B41 in my area (NW part of town). Haven't sought it out enough to do some real diagnostics, but I'm guessing that, along the 183 corridor north of me, plus a bit south on 360, there have been three or more new (or converted) B41 sites. I'll get more details at the week goes on.

I visiting the Austin market with a new phone (HTC M9) and still trying to sort out whether some of my experiences are network or phone related. I'm having a heck of a time in the SoCo restaurant area. I've got a really strong connection, usually on LTE800 but sometimes on 1900 but I've got basically no data throughput. I could calculate a route to the airport even. Is this a current issue in that area or should I be looking at my phone for any issues?

This sounds like a network issue. The best way to diagnose a problem like this is to have a second device to compare to. So if someone you know who also uses Sprint in the same area and is having the same problems, it is likely related to network congestion. The M9 previously had some difficulties maintaining a network connection, especially when B41 was involved, but a recent update took care of most of those issues.

100ms ping or higher = Clearwire tower almost every single time (at least in the Austin market)

That's almost everywhere. Any clear tower or clear equipment in southeast Texas also lacks in ping times behind Sprint NV equipment. It's not very noticeable while browsing, but I'd imagine people doing VoIP over hangouts may notice some lag. Never tried it though.

Fredericksburg and Kerrville are broadcasting a second carrier on 1900. I would assume that means Austin proper is as well.

Not necessarily, but definitely a chance it may be. Austin has the spectrum to do a 10x10 if I recall correctly. There is a new PRL coming out soon so if they are going to repurpose spectrum, now's the time.

      Kind of amazing that T-Mobile is still holding onto that speed title despite Verizon all but killing off lowband 5G on their network. While Verizon is mostly being evaluated on mmWave and C-band performance, T-Mobile and AT&T's average 5G speeds include their massive lowband 5G networks that are significantly slower.

      Yup. Very true. We were originally on an Everything Data 1500 Plan, which got Unlimited Minutes thanks to Marcelo's "Loyalty Benefits" offer. We then switched to Unlimited Freedom (with the Free HD add-on that Sprint originally wanted $20/month per line for.... remember that?) because the pricing was better with "iPhone for Life", vs. the "Loyalty Credit" for staying on a Legacy Plan. After that, I ran the numbers and switched us over to Sprint MAX, especially for the international travel benefits. There's absolutely no reason for us to switch to Go5G Plus or Go5G Next if we're going to do BYOD by purchasing from Apple/Samsung/Google directly as we've been doing. These new plans aren't priced for current customers to switch to. They're priced for new customers, where they throw in a free line, etc. It's gone from "Uncarrier" to "Carrier". What a shame.

      Strange business model that they keep around all these pricing plans. 1000s of plans per carrier is reportedly not uncommon.  Training customer support must be a nightmare. Even MVNOs have legacy plans. A downside of their contract mentality I guess. Best to change contracts during a recession. But then all carriers try to squeeze out legacy plan benefits as they grow old.
