  1. Today is the day: http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/22/8467433/google-launches-mobile-service https://fi.google.com/about/ Nexus 6 only, $20 base charge, $10 per GB charge that is prorated if you don't use the full GB. Data rates the same around the world, international calling 20c/min A resounding meh from me. My current Sprint plan is far, far better and this is beaten by a ton of MVNOs. The international stuff is cool I guess but I really only travel to Mexico once every 2-3 years so this won't be a huge draw for me. Even then I could just grab a t-mobile sim and use my phone (nexus 5) anyways.
  2. Okay... phone is completely stock. Recently I noticed to make a call from contacts I have to click and then click once more to make the call. When I click I can see it change the frame to pull up the call screen but immediately that goes away and then when I click it (the call button) again it works successfully. This happens when A) Calling from my contacts and also when adding a new number and calling from there. I've also noticed the phone redraws the home screen quite often and it is sorta annoying.
  3. Well, I heard from friends that T-Mobile speeds had gone down in SA but wow, it looks like every carrier is getting absolutely hammered on their speeds there.
  4. TBH this was one of the reasons I left Ting to come back to Sprint. Well, that and the high data costs. Still, Ting was probably the best mobile carrier experience I ever had and I amassed nearly $300 in referral credits from linking people there. I just couldn't stay due to my new job requiring a lot more data usage. They don't pay for my cellphone bills or provide a corporate phone but my salary is much higher so it is a net gain to pay Sprint $77/mo for 2 lines.
  5. TBH what my family does is my parents pay for full cable service + Netflix and the rest of the kids chip in a few bucks a month for HBO etc and we all share the logins. This way I have a regular antenna for over the air signal, HBO GO, Showtime app, Watch ESPN for sports, etc. My parents don't mind because we all help pay and they want the services either way. So really I pay for my internet (100/10 for $46/mo) and then toss in $15/mo to my parents. Works great for us!
  6. Yes. I believe this to be the case on the very fringes of B41 in S. Austin. My N5 will very stubbornly hold on to B41 unto the point where I get time outs. This on a tower that I KNOW I can get 30+down from a few blocks away.
  7. I think the massive improvement we've seen via Rootmetrics is proof the network has come a long way. I am expecting further big improvements and moves up in rankings over this 1st half of 2015.
  8. crossposted from the Marcelo thread: http://www.rootmetrics.com/us/rsr/austin-tx/2014/2H So a Tie for the big 2 and Sprint in 4th but a large jump forward from 1st half 2014. Overall score from 86.9 to 94.4 Average DL from 2.4 to 8.4 Most importantly what I was hearing from friends turned out to be true. T-Mobile is slowing down here: "T-Mobile’s median download speed decreased from 17.6 Mbps to 13.4 Mbps." Still faster than Sprint but interesting nonetheless. Also AT&T has sped up while Verizon has lost the 1st place rank in speed which was unexpected. Many of my AT&T friends complained about slower service in some areas. http://www.rootmetrics.com/us/rsr/aus-airport/2014/2H Sprint remains completely and utterly useless at the Airport.

  10. What TWC does here is fairly smart. It makes deals with businesses who use TWC to open a TWCable wifi for any TWC internet user above the "basic tier". Using this strategy the downtown area here has pretty good coverage as well as shopping areas where people go, etc. Sure it doesn't help you on the freeway doing 80 MPH but it worked great for me on Ting. Unfortunately I now have to do quite a bit of business on the outskirts of town now and Ting became cost prohibitive without WiFi to offload onto.
  11. I wonder if this means Google can take the TWC approach and blanket areas of towns with WiFi to give even better service for WiFi calling. I live in Austin so I am really looking forward to what they eventually offer. Too bad Google Fiber rollout is so slow here..
  12. Currently: 2 lines 24 GB shared data (20 GB + 2gb per line promo) 23% discount $77 base $11 taxes $88 total. We own our phones. I have a Nexus 5 and my wife is on an iPhone 5 for now. Normal usage is around 12-16 GB per month.
  13. In Austin B41 is 65-20 but usually around 30 for me (in S. Austin).
  14. Until Sprint can get all existing customers onto triband devices to see the true power of the network it will continue to be badmouthed by current AND former customers.
  15. Yeah I can't blame them for considering selling some of that spectrum when it is valued so ridiculously high.
  16. Confirmed: No employer discounts on the $100 plan.
  17. Yes but we can all hope can't we Currently on hold but I have to pick someone up from the airport soon so I may not get an answer. The phone reps have no idea what this plan is btw.
  18. Currently on phone and on chat at the same time
  19. Hum, good point. However, at the end of the promo period it would actually be: Family Share for $107 after my 23% discount VS Family Unlimited for $85 forever? I'm gonna have to call Sprint for this one... I bet they pull some employer discounts shenanigans.
  20. Hmm, If the $100 unlimited plan for 2 lines is legit it is definitely a better deal than my current $100 for 2 lines @ 20 GB + promo data without line charges... Is it even possible to switch plans after you are under contract already? http://www.sprint.com/landings/unlimitedfamily
  21. Ugh. The one thing leftover after all of this Softbank/Network Vision/Marcleo the Great saga has been that the stores still treat the brand like Boost Mobile for people who don't want to be on Boost Mobile.
  22. I wish all the stores were corporate where I lived. All the affiliate stores are just shy of crooked. Charging extra for SIM cards, adding insurance when you decline, etc. Really bad experiences there was definitely a contributing factor to my leaving Sprint previously.
