HTC EVO 4G LTE

I guess I can update without fear of screwing something up.

To be clear, the Sprint Zone dashboard shows a "Update Now" message for the device software; but when I tap on it, I'm told that my phone is up to date.

Not sure what software you are asking about. Phone software is 4.13.651.3   Sprint Zone is 4.6.34 (just updated today). No idea what JSS15Q is.

JSS15Q is an update for the Nexus 7 tablet from August 2013. Any mentions of it on another device must be a glitch with Sprint Zone.

Well, that would explain why I've not seen a number like that on my EVO before...

Hey! Aren't you supposed to be working on Signal Check?

j/k  :)

I've installed 4.3 and having an issue.

I've got the clock/weather widget on my main homescreen.

While at work it updates (weather) at the specified intervals.

However at home connected to either WiFi or LTE it doesn't update.

I tap the weather side of the widget, even then it doesn't update on it's own.

After manually updating... even then after a couple of minutes, it's back to showing nothing on the widget again.

Is this a tower issue of some sort?

Swype has stopped working on my phone. It is in a constant state of restarting. No keyboard for any application, so I can't send text messages or anything. Restarting my phone didn't help.

Any ideas?

You should be able to switch to the HTC keyboard by going to settings, language and keyboard, and turning swipe off. That will at least temporarily let you type.

Have you tired clearing your Swype data? Go to settings, apps, all, click on Swype, and click on clear data. You might also want to click on the uninstall updates button, if it's available.

Anyone know a way to turn off the shutter sound for the camera and screen shot sound? It still makes the sound even on vibrate.

What software version are you running? Are you rooted?

Try to see if this will work, enforced stream silencer. No root necessary.

I've used it on my EVO 4G, Photon 4G. It may work with the EVO 4G LTE.

Instructions,..

1-download the apk from Google (above) onto your phone (remember which folder you downloaded it to)

2-Enable "Unknown Sources in Applications Settings".

3-Browse to the file with your devices file manager. (or swipe down the notification bar and click on the download)

4-Open the app and check the "checkbox".

You can then test the stock Camera app and you shouldn't have the shutter sound anymore.

Just tried it...it said something to the effect of "Did not successfully set volume to 0, please try again!" and doesn't do anything else...

No dice.  Can't change settings, turn off Swype or anything with it constantly trying to reload.  I couldn't clear data either with it in that cycle.  In the end, I had to do a hard reboot and start over from scratch.

Has anybody done a screen replacement on this phone?

Yes, it's not horrible but replace the digitizer and lcd as a pre-assembled assembly. You will never separate them without breaking it. There are also a couple YouTube videos that show how it comes apart.

Hi skid71,

I've been gone for a week on vacation, followed by being buried by all the work that didn't get done while I was gone, so I don't know if you've solved your problem or not.

If not, it sounds less like a tower issue and more of a synch issue or possibly a location issue. There are two places to check your settings: Tap the weather icon > touch the three dots > touch Settings. I have "Update when opened", Scheduled synch" and "Auto detect my location" selected (with my update schedule set to every three hours).

The second place is Settings >Accounts & synch > Weather. I have "Update when opened" and "Weather" selected, with the update schedule again set for every three hours. These settings work fine for me.

Something else that may help is to clear your cache partition if you didn't do so when you updated to 4.3. Many times odd or intermittent faults can be cleared up by doing this. You can clear your cache (does not wipe any data on the phone) by doing the following (to be safe, be sure you have a pretty full battery charge):

1)  Go to you Power settings and make sure Fast Boot is not selected.

2) Power your phone off. Wait a minute or so after the screen turns off to make sure the phone is completely off.

3) Hold the Volume Down button, and press the power button while continuing to hold Volume Down.

4) Let your phone do its thing; eventually you will end up at the HBOOT menu. Navigate to "Recovery" using the volume up/down    buttons, and select it (Recovery) with the power button.

5) Your phone will appear to restart and  eventually show a red triangle with an exclamation point on a picture of a black phone. When you see this, hold down the Volume Up button and press the power button while continuing to hold Volume Up.

6) Again, let your phone do its thing until it ends up at another menu. Navigate to "wipe cache partition" using the volume buttons and select it using the power button.

7) When the wipe is complete, navigate to the "Reboot Phone" option and select it with the power button.

Clearing the cache partition after an update seems to help with a lot of seemingly unrelated software glitches. I apologize if I seem to be hand-holding a little much here, but I don't know how familiar you are with these things and it's safer to assume very little knowledge than go the other way :) .

Along with the weather issue I described on the previous page, yes, I was having voicemail issues as well.

The weather issue was fixed by re-provisioning data on the Evo. Sorry, I can't remember the exact steps I took.

It involved using ##72786#.

To fix the voicemail issue I had to use ##3282#, change the data value to "1" instead of "0", then commit those changes.

Everything data has been working flawlessly since.

Keep in mind that I did not run the RUU.

For those of you who are not aware, the official Android 4.3 update for the EVO LTE is now in its fourth revision (4.13.651.4), the latest of which apparently includes fixes for data roaming and installing the RUU from Windows 8. Installing this will wipe your device, even if you are already running one of the earlier 4.3 versions from HTC, so ensure that you have backed up whatever you want to save.

Option A: If you want to do it the easy way, download the RUU and run it from your Windows-based computer; it will wipe out your phone (it should leave your SD card alone, but remove it if you want to be safe) and provide the latest factory fresh stock HTC version on your device. The link to download it is in an XDA post here; be sure to thank that poster for sharing his efforts.

Option B: If you are already S-OFF and want to run a rooted version by flashing a custom recovery and then the ROM, follow the instructions in the XDA thread here. If all of that seems confusing to you, Option A is probably a better idea for you. Captain_Throwback is a huge asset to the EVO community for those who are not aware, so be sure to thank him as well.

Either method you choose will take about 20 minutes, and the first boot will take awhile, so be patient. The two threads I linked to have all the technical information and answers that you might need; if you have a question, chances are somebody has already asked and answered it over there. I only wanted to post a note here for the S4GRU folks who might not be aware there are updates available.

HTC has not ruled out further revisions, but they have been clear that any updates will require procedures like this; there will be no OTAs. I just appreciate the fact that they are making an effort to upgrade a device that has been out for nearly 2 years.

    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
