Sprint airave and 4G

Hello all, I have a question about my sprint airave. The closest tower to my house is approximately 4 miles away if I'm correct. So what I'm wondering is when this tower is eventually upgraded to 4G, will my phone be able to connect to it? Or will my airave being a stronger signal override the 4G signal?

Side question: are 4G signals stronger or weaker than 3G signals necessarily? Thanks for any insight you guys can supply ^_^

Sprint has their phones currently set up to hold on to slivers of LTE signal.  Once you lose LTE, it takes a bit to get back off EVDO, but it will happen.

 

Nice thing about your house is you should have wifi and none of this will really matter because voice will still come through your airave, whether you have LTE or not.

You can connect to an Airave for 1x and 3G EVDO and to a separate LTE site within range, no problem.  LTE on 1900MHz has the same signal strength as 3G EVDO on 1900MHz.  However, LTE needs a stronger signal to be effective.  So LTE is not as usable with a weak signal as 3G EVDO is.  So there will be less usable coverage of LTE than 3G EVDO from the same tower.  This is not much of an issue in urban areas, as sites are much tighter together than necessary.  But in exurban and rural areas, seamless LTE coverage won't really appear until Sprint gets LTE on 800MHz to those areas.

That's very true, my wifi at home is very fast. I'm just very anxious to see that 4G symbol on my phone...as I'm sure many of us are :P Thanks for the info supert0nes

You really should be in a good situation with the airave, although some interesting things are starting to happen with CDMA-800 coming online.  People are connecting to towers further away because the CDMA-1X 800 signal is picked up even if a CDMA-1X 1900 signal is closer.

 

EVDO and LTE are only data (VoLTE is probably further away than your next upgrade), so they are unrelated to the voice signal issues around NV and Airave and they will stay connected and be waiting for you once you leave/turn off your WIFI.

You really should be in a good situation with the airave, although some interesting things are starting to happen with CDMA-800 coming online.  People are connecting to towers further away because the CDMA-1X 800 signal is picked up even if a CDMA-1X 1900 signal is closer.

No phone has lte800 connection capabilities yet, correct? I think this will be a huge advantage for sprint, the lte800 spectrum that is. It will help out a lot of the country, for those who live in more rural areas like myself.  I think that will be a game changer. Here's to hoping

1900 only but that could change any day. I expect sprint to give a full network update press release about nv 800 and 2600 very soon. We are at financial quarter end and all of the acquisitions just completed so timing is important.

Are there any phones out right now that support anything other than 1900mhz? I ask because I have found through digging that my galaxy s4 supports 1700mhz lte? Do you happen to know if that even belongs to sprint or would that be a verizon frequency?

T-Mobile has nationwide AWS 1700

AT&T has some AWS 1700

 

Your phone supports CDMA 800 SMR/850 Cellular/1900A-G PCS and LTE 1900 PCS.  This is as advanced as any phone out today on Sprint's network.  Many Wimax phones support CDMA 800 as well.

 

tri band devices are right around the corner, probably coming on the next wave of phones for the holidays.

We have a dated EVO 4g phones. In my rural neighborhood we have no signal and rely on a airave, I assume, by your statement, once cdma 1x800 comes online we may finally have a usable signal outside of the airave coverage.

Evo3D has 800SMR. The Galaxy S2 supposedly had it but last time I checked the PRL it was running did not have 800SMR scans in it. The original EVO and Epic wimax devices do not have 800SMR support.

Okay I have a confusing situation and I didn't want to open a new topic for it so I'm hoping someone sees this and can't help me out. My phone all day has been roaming in my house and refuses to connect with my airave. I've tried resetting my phone, resetting my airave, etc. The most peculiar part though is when I'm outside my house my phone reconnects to sprint with a fair signal, about -91dbm. However, in the past my phone tends to roam outside my house, and if it wasn't roaming it was a weak signal ~-108dbm. Can anyone explain why this would be happening? Do airaves tend to "go down" sometimes? It's not a huge deal I suppose but I try to keep my roaming usage as low as possible, out of respect. Edit: I added a picture for reference. I don't know if it helps or not but clearly my internet is working so that can't be the issue. I'm at a loss.

I had 2 un plug my airave. It caused the same problems.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however. 
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.  
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
