Ubuntu for Phones announced

In a nutshell it's a build of ubuntu that runs on smart phones that has full desktop functionality when docked but a custom and (imo very cool) gesture based launcher on the phone. The OS was demo'd on a Galaxy Nexus but Canonical intends to bring binaries to more existing devices, (that meet minimum specifications and have open bootloaders).

Personally I am not a fan of Ubuntu, but Windows Phone and Blackberry just went out the window....

Wow, that took me a long time to watch those videos. Looks promising. Although I am not fond of the iPhone like apps icons.

Looks kinda cool. But I'd rather have Mozilla's new Firefox OS on my phone before Ubuntu. Never really could get used to Linux in it's regular forms.

I've always had issues with app compatibility in Linux. I just have too many windows only applications to fully switch to anything else.

 

Aside from that I suggest you give Linux mint a try. The user interface (cinnamon) is beautiful and intuitive unlike unity (comes with Ubuntu) or vanilla Gnome 3.

 

When I try this, I will install cinnamon on top of ubuntu to get that better experience (in desktop mode)

 

I encourage you to give Linux a second chance with Cinnamon.

I'm stuck in my ways using Mac OS X. I use Windows because I have to for school. And for my Mobile OS, I will stick with iOS and Android for now. If I get some free time, I will try out your suggestion, but it will probably not become my primary OS.

The thought of an Ubuntu phone is pretty neat. On my old Evo 4G, I found tons of Ubuntu themes. I have Ubuntu on one of my computers, too. So I have been introduced to it, I haven't used it for a while and I'm not a pro at at. Yet I am somewhat fond of the idea of another OS. But what amazes me the most is the idea of a phone that recognizes gestures. At first it will be difficult, but I'm sure it could be pretty fun to use. I will see the gesture OS firsthand once it comes out on the Nexus and I'm very interested.

I cant wait till they release Ubuntu for the SGS3!!! I used Ubuntu on my ps3 and a few of my laptops and really enjoyed it... I think (well really hope) it will fare better than web OS and WP7.

It's really buggy in that it will "black screen" quite a lot. And there are a lot of non-working apps, so you will click them and they won't do anything or they'll just show a picture of what the app will look like.

I'm going to put Ububtu on my GNex. Just waiting awhile for them to work out a few more bugs.

I am using ubuntu for my home O.S., it's great... I run windows in a VM when I need to do windows things... I highly suggest it to people who want to advance past basic computing skills
