Here's speedtest taken this morning at the corner of Gaffey and Channel streets in San Pedro. If I read Robert's make correctly thie tower near Capitol and Gaffey is past due to receive LTE. Still, the 3g speeds are much improved in the area.

My best speed in my trip today was 900 or so down. I've gotten better speeds in a non NV market. :|

Nope. Doesn't mean that at all. eHRPD goes live far in advance of LTE.

Can an old Wimax device pick up eHRPD or is it only available/noticed by LTE capable devices?

Nope. Only LTE devices can connect to eHRPD.

I know off the 215 in Pasadena has been in the 1-2mbps range for a couple months now. Every time I pass thru (which isn't much) I do speed tests. So jealous as my averages from a tower 500ish yards away averages dial up speeds. But that's here in Anaheim.

I agree. The Anaheim area around Angel Stadium has horrible 3g data speeds. Good luck opening a data heavy app like ESPN Fantasy Baseball or the MLB app in under 30 seconds. I hope Sprint has LTE in Anaheim by the beginning of next baseball season.

A good friend was torn between getting the Galaxy S2 or an LTE phone (EVO 4G LTE or Galaxy S3) because he gets decent Wimax coverage at his work location in Anaheim, but the 3G signal is awful. He elected to go with the Galaxy S2 because of the current Wimax coverage. But he says the Wimax speeds have digressed, even non existent, now which has frustrated him to the point of contemplating ETFing to another service.

I'm sure a lot of people are comtemplating paying the ETF and going to Verizon or At&t. Sprint is betting big on this Network Vision project and so far, it looks like they're not living up to their self-given standards.

I seriously considered going with At&t myself, but that bill is gonna be higher, with wayyyy less data. I looked at how much data I've used with Sprint so far, and I already used about a gig from doing speedtest alone. That was only after 2 weeks of having the phone smh.

I would stick with unlimited data and wait for NV. I just used up 1GB in a half of a day on LTE going around to different sites and doing speedtests.

I'm sure of quite the opposite. I wonder which one of us is right?

Of course! @Leerage. I would be going over my data limits every month with At&t. There is no room for flexibilty on their data plans. Lol, you are a lot more knowledgeable than I am about this thang @S4GRU. So, I'm quite sure you are. But, I have seen a lottt of people say they are seriously considering paying the ETF fee. Just head over to the sprint forums and you can see the carnage.

I'm sure it is. Too bad i didn't get to test out LTE today. Didn't go anywhere near the 2 active towers today. :(

I'll post my speedtests later on eHRPD, which dropped off the 405 just south of La Tijera Blvd, but i had it on the 105 to the central ave exit, and down on El Segundo Blvd by Willowbrook Park.

What two active towers? Are you talking about towers with 4G LTE or just eHRPD? I get eHRPD at my house at the crossroads of Mullholland Dr & Mulholland Hwy (yeah same name) in Calabasas Highlands, CA. I haven't rec'd 4G LTE yet, but I am about to load a screenshot of my speedtests lately.

Please let me know where those towers are; I'm anxious to make sure my phone isn't one of those EVO 4G LTE's that has a broken 4G LTE radio receiver.

Thanks!

So this is proof that eHRPD does not get any faster speeds. Believe it or not, this is, in general, faster than I have been getting the past 4-6 months. I was getting 'no data connection'- about 0.01 or 0.02mbps 3G or 1X in my area ever since the 'Network Vision' started going on out here. The past several weeks now I have also been experiencing a flood of duplicate texts (also from Network Vision upgrades they said).

With WiMax on my old EVO 3D, I was able to get about 4 bars of service and 0.50-1.00mbps of 3G, but the day I brought home the EVO 4G LTE, I never saw speeds higher than 0.80mbps again...anywhere.

I replaced my EVO 4G LTE while in Palm Springs for a conference in June because I had woken up to no data at all (3G icon was gone) and nothing, not even a hard reset of the device brought it back.. so they replaced it for free. Still the same speeds with that device. Their answer? 'Network Vision' upgrades in your area.

So, unless they are weaving a very complex web of lies, I am assuming 'Network Vision' is in full swing (according to all the phone reps I talk to) all the way from Palm Springs to Woodland Hills & Calabasas to Thousand Oaks and up to even Oxnard, CA (where I work and I have called them there as well).

We'll see if this opens up like they claim it will.

Tonight I called Sprint and the Sprint rep told me in no uncertain terms the following

  • Sprint Rep: The duplicate SMS messageissue as well as the slow data speeds in your area were scheduled to finish on the 19th, sir. They were a little behind schedule so give them until about midnight tonight and the duplicate SMS should stop.
  • Me: OK Thank you. What about the slow data and unusable speeds?
  • Sprint Rep: That to. It is all part of Network Vision and will be complete by early tomorrow morning.
  • Me: Wait, so, 4G LTE will be turning on in my area (Calabasas) sometime early tomorrow morning (the 21st)?
  • Sprint Rep: That is correct, sir. If you are still experiencing problems with text messages and data, please call us back as I have made a note... etc.

Personally, I am extremely skeptical but I am taking them with a grain of salt right now and waiting..

I noticed Ehrpd for the first time tonight when I got home from Oxnard work.

I am unable to update my Data Profile or PRL tonight either (error code 1233). Could this be related?

I pay between $100-$200 a month for 2 Sprint phones.. I hope I start getting some return for all that money. Yesterday I had to use GPS and Google Mpas took 3 minutes to find pizza near my location. It took close to 10 minutes for an mp3 to download on an email attachment and.. get this I still have a MMS picture mail that still says downloading after 5 days! (I doubt it ever will).

Please Sprint... give us SOMETHING in Los Angeles... even 1mbps 3G download speeds are better than ~0.01! :(

I am biding my time.. giving Sprint the chance I think it deserves because of the quality service I got from about 2007-early 2011.

Please don't prove me foolish in my patience.

Robert has done a good job of explaining that eHRPD doesn't mean faster data speeds... it just means that you are being routed through new Sprint "4g cores" or sprints new "switches". The fact is, that tower hasn't seen any backhaul and/or increase in carriers, so you have the same bottleneck.

In some markets, people have noticed that where the legacy 3G switches were overloaded, switching to the newer 4G switches yielded faster speeds.

Network vision is under way in the LA market, but it takes time. Even after they install a new base station, new radios, etc, you still need the backhaul to arrive before you will see the improved speeds. Once the backhaul arrives, it's like a switch gets flipped and you will go from nothing to 1.5mbit+.

Agreed, I was responding to some people that assumed it meant faster data but I agree a good job has been done explaining what eHRPD actually is.

:deal:

What are your thoughts on what the Sprint rep told me. So far nothing out here so I am assuming they weren't educated in what's actually being updated or turned on here?

Ah, gotcha. Makes sense. I did some interesting tests comparing unloaded EVDO rev A vs. eHRPD in the Boston thread with speed tests and traceroutes. You might want to check it out if you are interested.

I would ignore anything Sprint reps have to say and just stick with S4GRU, heh.

eHRPD connection is not indicative of being connected to a completed NV site. eHRPD tends to go live over an area, not over complete sites. Since eHRPD is needed to hand off data between LTE and 3G, eHRPD needs to be on every site adjacent in advance of a LTE site going live. Some markets have had eHRPD go live months before the first LTE site was completed.

On another note, we have not had one confirmed live LTE sighting in LA County, yet.

4G LTE San Fernando Valley, L.A. Coming Soon!

Today I spoke with Sprint for almost 30 minutes about the condition of the towers. He seemed to know exactly what he was talking about. He explained that the rep (see my previous posts) probably meant that 4G LTE ready towers were completed last night.. and they were. Since about 4-5am this morning, I suddenly have not been getting many if any duplicate texts, my data speeds are still awful but there is no EVDO, everything is 1X or Ehrpd. Data speeds near the tower are 3G but much better. I'm seeing close to 1mbps at the 101 Freeway and Topanga Canyon (Hwy 27).

The Sprint rep told me that an enormous amount of towers in the San Fernando Valley went live last night (meaning they are 4G LTE ready, but the switch hasn't been flipped to ON) and 101 Frwy/Hwy 27 Tower was one of them. He said if I am getting Ehrpd on my phone now, I will get 4G LTE when the switch is flipped ( ). He also told me that when the EHRPD begins appearing, 4G LTE will follow in roughly 90 days or less. So I asked 'Like 3 months?' and he said 'Way sooner! They'll turn it on in a few weeks, I'm pretty sure. We have enough towers up now to begin rolling it out. Corporate told us within 90 days and I'm sure It'll be earlier'.

Thats encouraging! Not just for 4G LTE lovers, but just those (like me) that want to see some usable Sprint service soon so we can use our smartphones and do more on them than take pictures to transfer to our PCs!

It's nice to talk to Sprint reps that really know what they're talking about and this one seemed like he certainly did.

Sure, it's a waiting game, but certainly more is happening now than even a week ago when I would call and get the standard issue answer of 'give it 3-6 months. Network Vision is deploying.'.

:wavey: My faith in Sprint is slowly being restored on what they say..

Now.. some action please.

Duplicate and delayed texts is not from network vision. It is happening in many markets that won't have upgrades for a while. I have seen it on one phone and not another and the phones were side by side, same sector, same channel.

@digiblur Not to be 100% contradictory but duplicate texts are one of the symptoms from Network Vision construction. No rhyme or rhythm and one phone may suffer, the other may not. Los Angeles is receiving Network Vision upgrades. The same hour that the upgraded towers were finished my duplicate SMS issues were solved. And not all phones have the issue because not all phones are being affected by Vision upgrades. One of the forums about the relation here; not common, but certainly not unrelated. My fiancé's phone doesn't have any issues at all with duplicate SMS' but the data is slow on her's also. I had EVDO and duplicate texts until about 4 h 00 on the 21st. At 4 h 00, suddenly, all duplicate texts stopped and at about 4 h 30 I noticed for the first time that my phone was on EHRDP.

:confused:Let's not get off topic now.

    • https://www.t-mobile.com/2023-annual-report Most items s4gru members will be aware of, but an interesting read.
    • I've now seen 100 MHz n77 from SoftBank and 100 MHz n78 from NTT. NTT seems to be a bit better south of Osaka, though in some cases it drops down to B19 LTE as some areas around here are pretty rural. SoftBank has n77 around, but it's flakey enough that I switched eSIMs earlier this morning.
    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
