  1. Here are the counties affected, if you take the press release at face value. Counties that I knew to be only nTelos have been removed:

    Huntington BTA

    Boyd, KY

    Carter, KY

    Elliott, KY

    Gallia, OH (Portsmouth)

    Greenup, KY

    Lawrence, KY

    Lawrence, OH

    Parkersburg BTA

    Calhoun, WV

    Pleasants, WV

    Ritchie, WV

    Washington, OH (Marietta)

    Wirt, WV

    Wood, WV (Parkersburg)

    Cumberland BTA

    Allegany, MD (Cumberland)
    Garrett, MD
    Grant, WV
    Hampshire, WV
    Mineral, WV

The Sprint WV market is almost all LTE (B25 & B26).  Most of its population is in Parkersburg and Marietta, thus I feel this agreement may extend further to include this entire market.  It is Samsung rather than ALU (Nokia) which Shentel uses.  It has one outlier: Logan WV. Most of it is part of the Columbus MTA.

Portsmouth is currently part of the Columbus Market and is all LTE except one site. Rumors have been flying for months about it being moved to another market. A freeway (US 23) connects it to Columbus.  The nTelos 3g sites are in the perfect location to cover a freeway bypass around Portsmouth that is being built now. All of these 3g sites are in the merger agreement to be improved to LTE by the end of next year iirc.

Now it is also possible that Shentel and the other Sprint markets will be intertwined, but I would think that is unlikely.

  2. Is there anything in the works to fix data problems in Canal Winchester?

We are not Sprint, but hobbists. We are now seeing small cells go live on the city of Columbus, but many suburbs will need to be overruled by the FCC before small cells arrive there to fill in weak spots in coverage. 3CA went live a couple of weeks ago and is only partially reflected in the latest rootmetrics report for Columbus where Sprint ranked #2.

  3. Probably because you've disabled the GPS?

I wish Sprint would drop the e911 requirements. T-mobile does wifi calling and you don't have to constantly be entering your location to use it.

Also any idea why wifi calling does not work in airplane mode with wifi enabled?

I think you are correct. I am on the Royal Carribean Anthem of the Seas out of range of shore sites and just enabling airplane wifi and wifi calling on a LG V20 and LG G4 gives me those issues. I must also enable another voice to pickup GPS (domestic which then sees gsm). Just switching to GPS only is not good enough.

Another interest twist is SCP also seems to cause problems with Wi-Fi calling on both phones. Exit SCP and Wi-Fi Calling fully works.

  4. I understand the CAPEX restrictions and appreciate the logic of using a higher structure. (And your analysis is probably correct.)

However, to say that it makes sense to submit proposals that only take into consideration technical requirements is ignoring the much larger world of politics and community activism.

I would like to see Mobilitie and Sprint succeed. I'm just concerned that some of these proposals are begging for opposition which will result in delays and additional expenses.

I agree that they should start with the shorter height poles first. The 120ft seem to be existing site replacements and all have failed around Columbus and they kill the shorter height ones with them.

  5. I really think Sprint needs to focus on densifying the macro network still.

Virtually all densification is currently B41.  B25 is generally referred to as refarming. The new B41 options at existing sites covered above come in at a far lower cost, thus should be able to be deployed where needed by Sprint (they will try refarming first, which does double speeds at the edge).

  6. Essentially it will aloe Sprint to provide its enormous B41 resources and spectrum to more people. It is supposed to in increase the range of B41 to 99% that of B25 outdoors and 90% that of B25 indoors. Basically, in many areas where users lose a B41 signal and are shifted down to slower B25, they will be able to maintain a connection to B41.

Don't forget that the cost of bringing b41 to small cities and towns has dramatically dropped. These solutions can be deployed at existing sites ( http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/4825-columbus-market-mapspreadsheet-premier-edition/page-108&do=findComment&comment=485655 ) or as stand-alone small cells if there is no 8T8R sites nearby (Nokia or Airspan).

  7. Sprint Montana License update

On 2/22/17 a technical document labeled "link budget supplement"  was added: https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/attachments/attachmentViewRD.jsp;ATTACHMENTS=BCv8YzWThLhK1zgQjh11wWFTcrQSr3XQjLmCVXTQT0SPG2qgCBnG!-55596135!-1680248972?applType=search&fileKey=304721726&attachmentKey=20094125&attachmentInd=applAttach

The next day the status was returned to "Offlined for Expired License Review".  I checked another area where we have confirmed the LTE to be usable this past summer and have GCIs etc.  It was given the same treatment.

  8. Don't forget that poles are measured in their entirely.  You have to add what is buried to what you see above ground to get pole length.

These small cells also appear to be deployed on the opposite side of the street from the power poles.  This is also true for Verizon small cells in most cases.

  9. I trust that each side will made decisions that they feel are in their best interest.  Marcello made clear in the last quarterly results that Sprint was prepared to lose some customers on subsidized plans.  Given that they recently seem to becoming more flexible, they may be having more churn than anticipated.  Marcello recently stated that Verizon was not listening to its customers right before they offered unlimited.  Marcelo may wish to listen more to his own customers.  However that does not mean he needs to agree with them.

Readers of this thread should be aware that some ED1500 customers are reporting receiving special deals from Sprint before or after they leave. Personally I would hope for a more widespread offer, which likely would not meet the desires of all current customers, yet could retain more of these customers (up to  approximately 30% of Sprint customers are on subsidy plans).  Sprint has an opportunity here to simplify its plan offerings and thus reduce sales and service costs.  We are no longer in the Great Recession, service has improved, so Sprint in many ways has a stronger hand.  While Sprint was focused on getting positive free cash flow, Verizon chose wake up to current trends.  Hopefully Sprint navigates these waters correctly..

  10. Anyone else having issues accessing data when roaming on Verizon?? I get absolutely nothing on evdo or 1x.

It has always seemed to be on a site by site basis. In its most limited that I have seen, calls, texts, and google navigation would go through, but nothing else. The same limitation some times apply to Sprint 1x800 sites.

  11. I'd imagine Sprint will do minimal to keep licenses. 3G is dead soon, and to expand a network with 3G is a big waste of money. Even if they could provide the absolute best coverage in those areas, ROI would take way too long.

These licenses are for LTE, which we have observed in one case. Coverage is very minimal but functional. VoLTE has issues with CDMA, so it will be a while before Sprint begins and even longer before others finish. Thin margins for any national carrier in less populated places like Montana. For all we know, Sprint could also be stalling. Pending is not rejected.

Insane it's taking this long. Any word on Wyoming, South Dakota or any type of marginal expansion or just nothing to report in general ?

I am using this as a bellweather. You can click on any of my paperwork links, then click on the license itself to see if anything else was filed. These things can go down a new paperwork track as was seen with the Shentel nTelos deal. I did check more a couple of months ago.

  12. Our sites are ready for 3xCA like yours (three pcis/earfcns), but the Sprint network is NOT 3xCA because there is no increase in speed using a 3xCA device compared a CA device. Performance improvement should be approximately 50%.
