  1. Ok, I'm going to clear up some misconceptions I've seen here on this page, because they're bugging me and I can't keep biting my tongue:

    1. On the compressed video - Sprint used to compress video on the ED plans, including ED1500. I know, I had this plan at one time. They limited streams to something like 500k or 600k. This was in the fine print. So the fact that video is compressed on the new unlimited plans really does not matter - it's just like the original ED, even if ED is no longer compressed. What Sprint is doing to help you out above and beyond the ED plans is giving you an option to stream higher rate video if you so choose. Of course it comes at a higher cost!!!

    2. There is an assumption someone made that the ED plans were at least at one time profitable. Of course, there is absolutely no proof of this. Sprint has never reported their profitability by service plan. Sprint has not been profitable for several years, and this situation accelerated after the introduction of the ED plans - in fact, one could reasonably conclude that the ED plans contributed to ARPU and net income declines.

You should have stopped at "Sprint has never reported their profitability by service plan."  So many factors.  Even more so if you go down to the individual or location level. A lot depends on how you allocate your overhead costs.

  2. I'd be nervous getting a replacement model from Samsung at this point. After losing a lot of money in this recall, I wouldn't count on the quality being the same with the rest of the device. In my opinion, Samsung should have recalled the Note 7 and offered either a refund or a replacement of another Galaxy device, while cancelling the Note 7 altogether.

I think they will be very careful on manufacturing quality. The bigger issue is damage to the brand and note product line. I still think it should be easily visible to anyone that it is a "fixed" product and a careful relaunch will be required.

  3. My v20 notes:

Like Note7 but with removeable battery

Devil is in the details. Will it do non contiguous CA like Note 7?

now, how to figure that out.  Perhaps Sprint and Verizon will have the same model and I can seen if it will handle all their CA options.  I am thinking about the possibility that Sprint may offer CA on Band 25 in the next couple of years (future, not present).  Last slide for the v20 says up to 600Mbps LTE cat 12 w 3x CA.  Likely that means more than Sprint. (note 7 should be able to do the same).

Other items I would add is the v20 is built to survive more drops with  MIL-STD 810G rating in theory plus you can protect the edges with a case.  Battery info should be ignored until we have actual battery life tests.Note 7 is thinner and shorter.
The note 7 screen is likely brighter in daylight
    v20 - shake free video
    v20 - no app drawer
    - vulkan api
might support usb 3.0, but does not ship with that cable
" While the effectiveness of Nougat's enhanced Doze mode remains to be seen, this phone could last for some time. LG stated that the V20 will last 20% longer than the V10, so our expectations are high.
It's also equipped with QuickCharge 3.0 support, a technology that resurrects phones from the dead in a matter of minutes. We'll provide in depth findings on battery drain and charge rates in our full review."
    - not modular like G5

v20 might be missing knock feature ( two taps on screen to bring it out of power saving etc).

release estimated to be in late September

  4. Does anyone here have news on if they are getting rid of SERO plans? Sprint users has a thread where people are reporting plan changes bumping them up to a $70 plan. I'm on SERO and just tried to swap a phone yesterday and was told my plan isn't available anymore. If contracts are gone and my plan is gone, that bumps my plan from $50 to $95 per month between plan increases and installment payments. I understand some changes, but that nearly doubles my plan costs and makes many other Sprint alternatives including project fi and tmobile (and even my brother's Verizon family plan) cheaper for my family.

Side note: I really don't get why Sprint doesn't offer leasing and installments on cheaper phones like Moto X, Moto G, and Nexus phones. It would be less of an ouch than the flagship phones that are all that they offer that are not crappy phones.

You might have to upgrade on line or via telesales.

  5. Received and installed update. You must use WiFi to download it although that is not stated. No evidence of 3xCA in engineering or data | LTE screens. No change with profile or PRL update. Issue with misidentifying plmn of Clearwire sites as 311940 to software remains. Engineering screen says 311490 as it should. Wifi Calling works, but I was unable to get texting to work after airplaning phone then turning on WiFi. No luck with Textra SMS either altough others may have had some success but where likely getting some 3g. Hangouts does work as alternative. Do not disturb has been removed from the pull down screen to make room for WiFi Calling.

  6. It's on CNN Money.  24 in every million. Will take at least two weeks. better article: http://www.theverge.com/2016/9/2/12767670/samsung-galaxy-note-7-recall-fire-risk

Yup, epic fail.  This is one of the primary reasons manufacturers moved away from replaceable batteries was to control quality

What really went up in smoke is the resale value.  Battery life has been quite good.  But will likely need to take precautions while charging.

"Samsung concluded that the faulty batteries are to blame for the explosions. Samsung SDI is the group within Samsung that makes batteries for the Galaxy Note 7. That is, Samsung SDI produces the battery cell, but the battery pack production is outsourced to other firms. Korean ITM Semiconductor produces the battery pack for the Galaxy Note 7’s that are sold in Korea. ITM’s batteries seem to have been the ones that exploded. Meanwhile, most phones sold in China are going to have battery packs from Chinese company Amperex Technology.

The Herald says that Samsung plans to go forward with the September 1st and September 2nd Galaxy Note 7 launches in China and Europe, respectively."  source: http://bgr.com/2016/09/01/galaxy-note-7-recall-is-on-the-table-following-battery-explosions/

battery is easily accessible, but glued in place with a soft glue.  It says replacement of the battery is very difficult.

Best comment I have seen: " I guess if they had made the phone with replaceable batteries this would not have been such a big deal.....went to the lg G5 and haven’t looked back..."

  7. According to the subreddit, the second killing of 2 year contracts for new subs that was supposed to happen on August 26 has been moved up to tomorrow: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sprint/comments/4yx9b6/psa_2_years_ending_823/?st=is6gsgax&sh=bbbfa462

After tomorrow, you gotta go online or go through telesales. I'm hearing mixed things about third party retailers like Best Buy.

Just bought a note 7 upgrade today on my 1500 2 year plan. I was told that starting today I could only get it online from a very knowledgeable rep who has worked with me before. The online store did not show the two year options for me, but he was able to get it to work. I will go back and buy my accessories from him, which I believe is the bulk of their commissions. The new plans are great for video watchers, but I use mostly data, including roaming which is 300mb on my plan.

No movement on clear sites being converted, (definitely not here in SE WA, I will wager every one is shuttered & not converted), no movement on 800 lte, and no densification... just a long term punch in the gut. But I long ago decided to stick it out because of when we used to get NV updates and being told of the lte schedule (which turned into vapor).

You should be watching out for these: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/3060-signalcheck-android-app-to-monitor-your-2g3g4g-lte-signal-strengths/page-201&do=findComment&comment=486282

Washington still has public safety sites that have not been rebanded. FCC allowed Washington state recently to take to the end of 2016 to reband the final two locations (burried in snow country). Then the way will be clear for 800 lte. Frustrating to be the last of the last, without 800 a person simply cannot count on lte in any location, it could drop at any time. This is why, without densifucation, as washington has not had, sprint is a bottom tier carrier. If I'm talking to someone at work and we want to access data via mobile, it sucks to look at a loading screen while they pull the data.

We feel your pain. 1x800 will likely come first, which will dramatically reduce dropped calls and no signal. Watch for the channel when it does arrive. B26 LTE 800 can be more problematic. Here is an issue you likely did not consider: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/4825-columbus-market-mapspreadsheet-premier-edition/page-108&do=findComment&comment=485622

Eventually B26 LTE 800 should come, but it may require the patience of Job.

  9. Mike, we have discovered a new type of Sprint site which is only being identified as LTE in SCP. These new sites are Clear Conversion sites operating on B41 yet have the standard market three character prefix. This is then followed by a 9 or an A in the dozens of cases that we have confirmed in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Sacramento. The easiest way to identify them is likely by the GCI sectors, 31, 32, 33 for first carrier, 39, 3A, 3B for second carrier

These sites actually have 3 "Nokia mini macros*" rather than RRHs, thus they have 3 unique site GCI, which have always been sequential so far. PCIs remain the same as the Clear Huawei sites they are replacing. The PLMN is pure Sprint rather than Clear or Clearwire. We understand from various Sprint contacts that these sites need to be replaced by the end of the year as part of the original Softbank buyout of Sprint.

For more detailed information, start here for Columbus: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/4825-columbus-market-mapspreadsheet-premier-edition/page-108#entry485655 and here for Cincinnati: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/6200-cincinnati-market-mapspreadsheet-premier-edition/page-44&do=findComment&comment=485752

This will likely affect the following markets which have Huawei*: Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Denver, (Northern) Los Angeles, Merced, Modesto, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Francisco - San Jose Bay Area, Seattle, Stockton, Visalia-Tulare-Porterville

  10. The bigger part of this Reddit thread is the rumored plan consolidation, which you can say already began with SERO last week. Having a huge number of plans increases sales training costs and affects customer relations (because no sales person can remember them all). Of course getting to fewer plans could cause even more problems. T-Mobile has already been down this path. Of course we will all try to hang on to our better plans, as we each define them given our own needs and circumstances, for as long as we can.

Besides the consistent payments with access to a new phone every two years without drama, the 300MB of roaming per month is also a draw. Once these plans disappear, the 100MB of roaming in the current plans may move from a soft cap to a hard cap IMO. It would be nice if Sprint would see the light and at least offer additional roaming of some sort of cost plus basis, ie the most expensive roaming plus 20% in 100MB increments for example.

Once these plans move to telesales and online only, it will be quite easy for them to quietly disappear.
