Within Return Window; Should I return my EVO LTE and get iPhone 5?
S4GRU replied to spotmeterf64's topic in Apple/iPhone/iOS
After spending a few days with the EVO LTE in a LTE market, I was almost tempted to throw it out the window. It really pissed me off. The LTE Connection issues stink. Its hard to imagine it used to be worse! Even the cheapo Viper was a LTE champ compared to the EVO. If I lived in a LTE market, I may be tempted to try another device. Dare I say it, maybe even an iPhone. The EVO LTE though is a marvelous phone off the LTE network. And hopefully they will still get the LTE connectivity bugs worked out. But now there has been a few OTA's to address the issue and it's still a problem. Robert via CM9 Kindle Fire using Forum Runner -

Sprint is just about to begin lab testing LTE 800. No one was even lab testing LTE 800 anywhere in the world up until now. And Sprint will be moving toward setting up two LTE 800 FIT's. Sprint just received FCC authorization this past summer. It's still a very new thing. In internal communications I have been privy to, it has been repeatedly stated that Sprint will not have LTE 800 devices ready until approximately Q2-2013, after they wrap up lab and field testing and present the information to the OEM's. Apple is not really an exception to this. Robert

This is no indication of LTE imminence in Southern Wisconsin. The sites in Southern Wisconsin near the Illinois border must have eHRPD when the adjacent Chicago sites across the border in Illinois go live. In order for LTE data to seamlessly transfer to 3G data when someone crosses the border (or vice versa), then all the sites they would transfer to must have eHRPD. Otherwise there will be a hard handoff. This is true of all LTE market boundaries. eHRPD is being deployed in many non LTE markets where there is any chance of being handed off from a LTE connection. Site deinstall has no bearing on LTE upgrades, only 3G upgrades. The legacy hardware can be removed before LTE is completed, because LTE does not use any legacy components at all. Only the 1x and 3G do. The LTE may be complete at this site, but I can tell you as of this past weekend, Sprint has not accepted the site as complete with LTE upgrades. Robert

Northern Jersey is a separate deployment. Period. That's not to say that some of it may be live in December, but the market will not be formally launched before the end of the year. If you want to hang your hat on the inclusion of Wayne in this list as some sort of imminence of LTE in the Northern Jersey market, you are going to be disappointed. Robert

Rants against Sprint are not allowed. However, I didn't read your post as a rant. Just explaining your observations and you tempered it with hopeful optimism. I can tell you as a person who has Verizon and Sprint service and spent four days testing both in the well deployed Waco market, that Sprint's LTE service is competitive. And the fact that Sprint's service is unlimited, makes it even better. Unfortunately, I live in a market that will be at the end of Network Vision. But I am excited to see it all develop and watch Sprint become a competitive carrier again. Besides, I get to use it when I travel. Robert via CM9 Kindle Fire using Forum Runner

Report Your LTE Connection Here
S4GRU replied to jegillis's topic in Network, Network Vision/LTE Deployment
LTE is very signal strength dependent. What is your dBm reading in your LTE Engineering screen in your Debug menu? In Waco, those kind of speeds were usually associated with -110dBm RSRP readings. Robert via CM9 Kindle Fire using Forum Runner -
Network Vision on 1x Only Towers
S4GRU replied to zodiac12345's topic in Network, Network Vision/LTE Deployment
Will Network Vision impact every single Sprint tower, even ones that have never been upgraded to 3G? Yes. Sprint will be upgrading even 1x only sites to include 3G EVDO and LTE. As referenced above, there are just under 100 sites that will not be upgraded to LTE. But these are mostly in very rural Western locations that cannot get upgraded backhaul or in redundant urban locations. If they are upgraded, will 3G be introduced, or will it just be LTE and 1x? Post Network Vision, there should no longer be any 1x only sites. Almost every single one of Sprint's 38,000+ native CDMA sites will feature 1xAdvanced/3G EVDO/LTE. However, 1x will travel slightly farther than EVDO and quite a bit farther than LTE from the same site. Will 800MHz come to these rural towers eventually? Yes, in most instances. Sprint is installing CDMA 800 and LTE 800 separately. Sprint is installing CDMA 800 (1x) now during Network Vision in markets where they already have enough iDEN service cleared out, and will continue installing CDMA 800 throughout Network Vision. They will put CDMA 800 on most sites. Starting in late 2013, Sprint will also start adding LTE 800 at approximately 80% of sites. The 20% where they will not are in redundant urban locations and in places where they have 800MHz licensing issues. -
Network Vision on 1x Only Towers
S4GRU replied to zodiac12345's topic in Network, Network Vision/LTE Deployment
Not necessarily all of the approximate 100 sites that will not receive LTE will get Network Vision upgrades. Many will. There are varied reasons why sites will not get LTE. Some are because they cannot get upgraded backhaul to the site. Some are because the site location inhibits the physical modifications involved (especially some rooftop and stealth locations). And some are because Sprint could not negotiate acceptable terms with the site owner for the modifications that needed to be done. I think in most instances, sites where LTE cannot be installed, Sprint will look for alternative sites nearby and decommission these sites in the long run. Robert -
I would like to hear a lot of feedback from members about this. I used to have a lot more subforums in the past and had a lot of member complaints. So I rolled them up into the current hierarchy. Robert

I was living in Reno, Nevada back in 2001. The day before I had just flew home from my sister's funeral in Florida. I had gotten really sick and flew home a day earlier than originally planned. By the time I got off the plane in Reno, I could hardly walk. The night of September 10th I was in the ER for hours. I had a severe internal staph infection and was on an IV for dehydration and antibiotics. If I hadn't gotten sick and flew home early, I would have been flying back on Sept. 11th and likely stranded in Orlando or Atlanta. I got home from the hospital around 3 AM, and my wife and I slept in until after 9 AM Pacific time. I remember walking out into the Living Room and turning on the TV and being confused about what I was seeing. The first thing I saw was what appeared to be a very far away shot of a person who apparently had jumped and the news anchor asking a producer to remove that video because you could make out the image of someone jumping. At first I thought maybe it was a mass suicide of people jumping off the World Trade Center. Maybe like a Heavens Gate thing. In approximately 60 seconds of listening to the news anchor talking, it was apparent what had occurred. By then it was past Noon Eastern time and everyone had concluded that it was an intentional attack and not an accident. I then turned on my phone and I had a dozen voice mails from friends, coworkers and family. I didn't leave the couch that day just watching the news, completely stunned. I am so grateful for all those who work to protect us, save us...on the streets of our towns and in far flung places around the World. Thanks to all of you who currently serve and who have served. Blessings to you all. And may God Bless America. Robert

I travel a lot in my job all over Northern New Mexico. Sprint native service ends at Espanola. All of Taos/Colfax Counties is roaming for Sprint. Sprint does not offer service in the Taos area at all. I often do work in Taos, Questa and Red River and roam a lot. Roaming in Taos County is on AT&T, through the remaining Alltel CDMA network that is still operating. Roaming in Colfax County is on Verizon, through the towers Verizon picked up from Alltel. The roaming in this area is all 1x. If you know how to upload PRL's to your device, you can change to a Sprint Corporate PRL which will give you 3G roaming in Colfax County, but not Taos County. You can change to a Verizon PRL that will give you 3G roaming in both Colfax and Taos Counties (which is what I do). However, when data roaming, you are limited to 300MB per month. Sprint will be installing LTE on their native sites in Northern New Mexico. However, this will be limited to the Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Espanola, Pecos and Las Vegas areas. Taos & Colfax Counties currently have no LTE coverage at all, from any carrier. Verizon will likely get there in the next year or so, but it's likely a low priority. AT&T will likely never offer LTE in the area. And Sprint has no sites in either county. There are no plans to expand Sprint native service in this area. We used to be able to run on Alltel as native service before they were bought out. Sadly, those days are over. Perhaps in a few years after being profitable, Sprint may expand its nationwide footprint. However, Sprint will likely focus on areas where they pay the most in roaming fees. Other than maybe around Taos, I cannot see this area as a high priority for Sprint. Robert

Sprint completed LTE design in the Milwaukee market this past summer. Planning and permitting should be completing this Fall. Deployment is likely to begin this Winter. Final scheduling has not yet been completed. Thank you for the compliments, however, my name is Robert Herron (with two R's) and different from the Robert Heron of HD Nation. Robert

This list from Sprint includes communities expected to have enough service to launch through December. Places that will launch in January or later are not on the list. We have projected that East Michigan would launch in April 2013, so we were not surprised to not see it on the list. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/212-network-visionlte-deployment-running-list/ Robert
