So I ran SpeedTest on a newly activated NV tower

Recommended Posts

and the results I got back were pretty disappointing on my EVO4g.

In the morning at 6:15 CDT I was hitting the tower here:

http://maps.google.com/?daddr=42.148837,%20-88.259143

Tower ID: CH03XC430

It is supposedly a completed tower. I got a ping of 115ms, download speed of 758kbps, and upload of 49kbps. I was sitting at the light at 62 and 25. I confirmed I was talking to that tower by using Netmonitor. On the way home this afternoon I got similar results. Have others seen better results with upgraded towers?

How many servers did you run the test on? Sprint's NV sites are on different backhaul. The servers you used to use may not be the best ones to run new speed tests on. We had several people in the Boston market who ran speed tests on new NV sites and had lackluster results. I suggested they try different servers and they were getting over 1.6Mbps.

I did the exact same thing today with the same results. try the 60684 prl posted somewhere around here. its like night and day

I'll give it a shot. I had seen that prl thread a while ago and one person said the Evo 4g didn't scan the G block frequencies so I didn't try it then.

I am beginning to think these Speedtests aren't worth much...

Here's the PRL.

But it was my understanding also that the Evo 4G does not support the G block, but the Evo 3D does. Anyone confirm that Evo 4G is incapable (as a Google search seems to indicate?)

Edit: Crap. We are talking about two different issues, aren't we? I am sleepy. Sorry.

Here's the 60684 PRL

Still not sure the Evo 4G supports it or I am confusing the two PRLs and what they do. I will just sit down and shut up now.

LOL! There were four different hardware revisions to the Evo 4g. I was going to give it a try since I figured there was a tiny chance that they unlocked g block frequencies in later radios. I have a rev 4.

Your speedtest graph was very intresting...

All these issues are related I think since they would probably tune up and test NV on the G block frequencies, like what they did during testing, before throwing the switch on active towers? Although, based on what you and S4GRU stated I think the root of my problem is the SpeedTest app. I will try again today.

ALL revisions of the EVO 4G have the hardware to support Band class 14; however, it appears the phone was only tested in band class 1 (excluding the G block). Therefore, the firmware or software on the phone doesn't recognize BC 14 though the hardware does have that capability. This seems to be the case with MOST handsets. The PRL won't affect your performance UNLESS you can actually use that G block carrier. After that scan, it is a stock Sprint PRL.

Using the Sprint issued prl this morning I pulled the fastest 3g download speed I have ever measured. From a tower a couple miles from the tower shown on the map I got 2.2 mbps download, 700k upload. The speeds were consistently over 1.5 meg. I suspect my issue was speedtest.

I just found the thread where this was being talked about. Thanks for the clarification, I will stick with the stock prl for now.

Just to clarify for others, our testing PRL's that we have in the Download Center were created to help you connect to either 800 CDMA sites or G Block Testing 1xA/EVDO carriers. This is just because we are dorks and cannot help ourselves. They are not designed as daily drivers. Thanks! :)

Seems like the perfect place to ask - what's the best PRL for a Sumasung Epic owner like me? I'm looking for the best 3G PRL since WiMax is pretty thin near the house. TIA.

EDIT: Sure WiFi works on my device, but still, need something to improve here.

prls just tell your phone what cell company it can roam with and who the home market is. Unless you hack one up so you force your phone to roam it won't solve your problem, even then the carrier your phone roams on may have the same problem. Have you created a network ticket for those awful speeds? Is it always like that?

The FCC Mobile Broadband app works good imo.

Sorry to revive a thread that has run its course, but I have an update. Quite a few towers have been upgraded in my area. You can tell right away since the nid and tower id change. Don't expect high speeds on day one however. It seems even if a tower is marked complete the backhaul and/or fiber may not be totally done yet... Does that make sense or am I wrong? As time goes on speeds seem to be increasing around here.

    • Kind of amazing that T-Mobile is still holding onto that speed title despite Verizon all but killing off lowband 5G on their network. While Verizon is mostly being evaluated on mmWave and C-band performance, T-Mobile and AT&T's average 5G speeds include their massive lowband 5G networks that are significantly slower.
    • 5G in the U.S. – Additional Mid-band Spectrum Driving Performance Gains T-Mobile holds on to it's lead in 5G Speed
    • Yup. Very true. We were originally on an Everything Data 1500 Plan, which got Unlimited Minutes thanks to Marcelo's "Loyalty Benefits" offer. We then switched to Unlimited Freedom (with the Free HD add-on that Sprint originally wanted $20/month per line for.... remember that?) because the pricing was better with "iPhone for Life", vs. the "Loyalty Credit" for staying on a Legacy Plan. After that, I ran the numbers and switched us over to Sprint MAX, especially for the international travel benefits. There's absolutely no reason for us to switch to Go5G Plus or Go5G Next if we're going to do BYOD by purchasing from Apple/Samsung/Google directly as we've been doing. These new plans aren't priced for current customers to switch to. They're priced for new customers, where they throw in a free line, etc. It's gone from "Uncarrier" to "Carrier". What a shame.
    • Strange business model that they keep around all these pricing plans. 1000s of plans per carrier is reportedly not uncommon.  Training customer support must be a nightmare. Even MVNOs have legacy plans. A downside of their contract mentality I guess. Best to change contracts during a recession. But then all carriers try to squeeze out legacy plan benefits as they grow old.
    • Everything "Uncarrier" is becoming "Carrier" again. Because of the Credit Limit that T-Mobile put on our account for no reason at all (and wouldn't change/update the last time I checked all the way up to the CEO), I don't plan on buying/upgrading our iPhones through T-Mobile. I'm going through Apple directly. Looks like I'll be going through Google and Samsung directly for our other lines for upgrades. Also, we're staying on Sprint Max given the ridiculous pricing for Go5G Plus. On Sprint Max, we currently pay for our Plan: $260 for 7 Voice Lines $25 for two Wearable Lines. (One is $10/Month. The other is $15/Month because the AutoPay discount only applies up to 8 lines.) Total: $285/Month vs. Go5G Plus (Per the Broadband Facts "nutrition label" on the T-Mobile Website): https://www.t-mobile.com/commerce/cell-phone-plans $360 - ($5 AutoPay Discount x 7 Voice Lines) = $325 The Watch Plans show as either $12/Month or $15/Month: https://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phone-plans/affordable-data-plans/smartwatches So this is about the same for the wearables as what we're paying now. Overall, it's quite more than we're paying now to switch plans. Ridiculous....
