I wonder if they fixed an issue with hotspot.  When I would turn on hotspot in the past while on LTE it would work fine, and then if for whatever reason i dropped down to 3G or lost signal for even a second, Hotspot would totally turn off.  Wonder if this has been fixed because its a pain to have to reconnect all your devices constantly if you are in an area with questionable signal...  I am downloading right now.  all 366.65 MB of it.  lol.

if you all didnt notice its got the number 666 in it.  LOL.  I just got a laugh out of that.

Any issues with updating it on a rooted GS5?

Oh also does download booster work????

Also wondering if what I saw on the Note Edge happened on the GS5.  On the note edge from what i noticed you could select band priority!  Anyone know if this is true not he GS5 now?

Hey guys so I have a GS5 and it was rooted under 4.4.2, well I have tried going back to factory in all ways I can think of, but even in factory 4.4.2 I am still getting the Software update message of The operating system has been modified in an unauthorized way.

Any way of fixing this so i can get the 4.4.4 update?

Hmm weird I'm about to see what happens. Maybe something tripped Knox?

Edit : so far so good at 32% no errors.

well mine worked fine. Idk what could be your issue, have you used any mods? You might take it in to a sprint store, and see what they say, given they can't find any proof of root or mods, you may get a new one.

Hey Jeremy can you do me a favor when you get yours working.  Can you test out if Sprint "unlocked" download booster???  That feature has intrigued me since the S5 was released and the booster was not there on Sprint...  Thanks.

I don't see it on stock 4.4.4 . I am waiting to root until towel root works for 4.4.4. So idk when I'd be able to test a mod.

Anyone experience stock 4.4.4 saying it was custom software? It is completely stock and haven't even flashed anything to trip Knox or make it custom since the update.

OK, I've been burned bad before with updates, so I'll go ahead and ask 2 simple questions which are important to me.

1. Cell data reception. Is reception on B26 LTE better? Worse? What about B41?

2. Can towelroot still be used without tripping Knox? I cannot go back to using apps without tablet metrics. Its just a pet peeve of mine having all this screen space and having apps look bulky.

Thanks in advance for any answers thrown my way guys.

Sorry, got a bit exited there and didn't read.

I'd still like a few more people to chime in on reception. Each situation is different.

Personally band 26 on fringe areas went down. Used to get it in a few locations i dont get it now. Band 25 seems about the same.

Ok so here are my experiences with updating to 4.4.4    I had to completely reflash 4.4.2 firmware onto my GS5 using Odin because that was the only way to get my GS5 to apply the update, otherwise it said my phone OS had been modified.

So after the update I am noticing several things that I like, and a few that i am not so sure about.

1. I am connecting to LTE better.  I.E. now the handoff between 3g/LTE (b25/b26) is flawless.  I have not been able to test B41 yet.  Only issue here is that where I live i am in a fringe area of LTE.  I am on the Florida/Georgia border and none of the towers in Georgia(my area have LTE on yet) so i rely on Florida LTE towers.  So my phone will constantly be swapping between 3 different LTE signals.  2 B26 and 1 B25 signal.  So I have issues with sending and receiving Texts.  Otherwise the handoff is awesome compare to in 4.4.2!

2. The camera is now great!  It loads much faster

3. The new release of Sprint Zone didnt come with 4.4.4 so now I'm back to the old on that (though i can't really say its that horrible, though I did like what they did to the new app on 4.4.2

4. Towelroot does not work on 4.4.4 on the GS5  (I have heard that the creator of TR now works for google closing these exploits, so i dont think there will be another TR version that comes out, but with that being said I hope that someone else takes up that area and comes up with a root for the OS.

5. Signalcheck now shows neighboring Cells!!!!

6. Con:  No root means no reset in SignalCheck.

7. good thing I had my MSL before the update, since there is no root I cannot use the MSL app to get it.

8. in ##3282#  I found a new addition to those settings called "ItsOn"    it is in default of being in the on position,  But its blacked out, so there is no way to turn it off, and when you click more settings it says Intent Set.  So I am not sure what this is if its good or bad? Any opinions on this?  Also noticed LTE band 3 has been removed from Advanced settings.

Overall it seems that the new update has brought some good new stuff and I am sure that 5.0 will be even better.

If anyone has any trouble with doing the update due to the issue I mentioned when I did my update please by all means contact me and I will help!

Kevin

By far the biggest thing I miss is the reset function of SignalCheck!  Wonder if there is anyway around this without root...

See anything coming for the S5 Sport?

What's the model number for the Sport?  (ie, S5 is SM-G900P)

Nevermind, I found it G860P.

I don't see anything past NJ2 (I'll assume you have NG1 on there now) http://device.sprintpcs.com/Samsung/SM-G860P-SPRINT/NJ2.rdf but that's still listed as 4.4.2

    • https://www.t-mobile.com/2023-annual-report Most items s4gru members will be aware of, but an interesting read.
    • I've now seen 100 MHz n77 from SoftBank and 100 MHz n78 from NTT. NTT seems to be a bit better south of Osaka, though in some cases it drops down to B19 LTE as some areas around here are pretty rural. SoftBank has n77 around, but it's flakey enough that I switched eSIMs earlier this morning.
    • I'm currently typing this from a bullet train headed from Tokyo to Osaka. Using a roaming eSIM rather than T-Mobile as it's a lot cheaper, but I'll start with T-Mobile's roaming experience. Since I have a business line, I can't add data packs online, so I'm just using the 256 kbps baseline service you get by default. That service runs on Softank 4G. SoftBank has a well-built-out LTE network though, with plenty of B41, falling back to B1/3/8 as needed. 5G roaming from T-Mobile doesn't appear to exist though. I've seen 20+10 MHz B41 when I've looked, generally speaking. WiFi calling works well, and voice calls over LTE work fine too (I forgot to turn WiFi back on after doing some testing, so I expect my bill to be a dollar more next month). I want to say I even got HD voice over the cell network for the VoLTE call I did. I have a bunch of eSIMs and a couple of physical SIMs to try out. I've gotten the eSIMs up and running, but last I checked the physical SIM wasn't working even after activation so I'll run through eSIMs for the moment and update this thread with pSIM info and details on not-Tokyo in the coming days. First off, there's US Mobile's complimentary East Asia eSIM (5GB) that I grabbed before my unlimited plan Stateside expired. That SIM uses SIM Club, routing through Singapore, running on SoftBank LTE and 5G. I've seen 40 MHz n77, as well as 10x10 n28, and have seen download speeds in excess of 200 Mbps with uploads of more than 50 Mbps, though typical speeds are slower. Routing is via Equinix/Packet.net. 5G coverage is rather spotty, but LTE is plenty fast enough; either my phone doesn't want to use the 5G band combos that have more coverage or 5G coverage is just spottier here than in the US (at least on T-Mibile). Latency is as low as 95ms to sites in Singapore (usually closer to 120ms), which is pretty great considering the 3300 mi between Tokyo and Singapore. Next there's Ubigi. It also routes through Singapore via Transatel (despite being owned by NTT), and sites on top of NTT docomo's network. I didn't see NTT 5G in Tokyo when I tested it, but since then I've seen 10x10 n28, and have seen B1/B3/B19 on the LTE side. So far it's not the fastest thing out there, but I'm guessing coverage will be a little better...or maybe not. This was $17 for 10GB. Latency is a bit higher to Singapore, but still under 150ms it seems. Then there's Airalo, which was the cheapest when I bought it at $9 for 10GB. It also routes through Singapore (on Singtel), but on my S24 I have my pick of KDDI (au) or SoftBank. KDDI has extensive B41 coverage and I've seen 20+20 with UL CA. While waiting for the train at HND Terminal 3 (Keikyu line) I hit 250+ Mbps down and 10+ Mbps up...over LTE...with pretty respectable latency numbers (not much above 100ms). This is in adition to supporting SoftBank, also on LTE (my S24 defaulted to KDDI, while my wife's Pixel 8 defaulted to SoftBank and didn't seem to want to connect to KDDI). Of the various carriers mentioned, I'd say this was the best pick, though prices have bumped back up to $18 for the 10GB plan...but it's probably still what I'd pick if I had to pick just one carrier. Then there's Saily, which uses Truphone out of Hong Kong. I haven't used this as much, as I only grabbed 3GB for $7. It runs on NTT but doesn't seem to have 5G access and doesn't seem to have as good speeds. Yes, Hong Kong is way closer to Japan, but latency didn't seem to be any better, at ~150ms. In all cases, I've had reception even in train tunnels and even at high speed on the bullet train, on all three carriers I've tried (I don't think I'll be able to play with a Rakuten SIM, which is rather disappointing). There have been cases where service has degraded, but it looks like you'd have reasonable cell service no matter which of the big three carriers you picked...and since T-Mobile roams on one of them, that's good enough if you're content to buy day passes.
    • https://www.phonearena.com/news/t-mobile-older-rate-plan-prices-june_id157821 We're on Sprint Max for our seven phone/two Apple Watch (with Cellular) family plan... Because it doesn't make sense to switch to anything else, especially if we can't even finance all of our devices. Some of you may recall that T-Mobile suddenly cut our credit limit to $1,500 (which is barely more than one iPhone 15 Pro) with no notice at all. I escalated it to the Office of the CEO and was told to pound sand, even though I have 800+ Credit as a longtime customer and was suddenly being treated as a deadbeat. I ultimately upgraded my three iPhone lines directly through Apple and they're Unlocked. I haven't bothered to check on whether my Credit Limit has updated, but I don't plan on upgrading them through T-Mobile again. I guess we'll find out if "Sprint Max" counts as "older" soon enough.
