Will NV Rollout Cover an Entire Market?

Does anyone know, when Sprint rolls out LTE to a Market (or an area) will they cover the entire market?

For example, the maps that I see in the Gallery show the Raleigh/Durham area of NC cover a wide range of counties including the County I live in. However, when Sprint rolled out WiMax they stopped a few miles south of my house, as do Verizon and AT&T currently with their LTE deployments.

With no DSL or Cable available to my home, I'm stuck with Sprint 3G for now and eagerly awaiting some form of upgrade. AT&T and Verizon won't be an option since I work from home and routinely use 18-21GB of data a month on the slow 3G network I have now.

Even though I haven't seen Raleigh/Durham on the list yet, I'm hoping once they do it covers all of the Counties in the map.

I got good news for you. Last night Orange County and the Raleigh/Durham markets were announced. Stay tuned for the article later today on the front page.

Also if you have a chance, Robert holds chats on Sun, Tues, Thurs and sometimes Fri nights around 9:30 MST in The Lounge to announce the markets you will see in the article on the wall the next day as well as have a nice discussion with fellow community members and of course you can ask Robert all your Network Vision questions. Check the calendar under More->Calendar for the official time of the chats. There is always a nice turnout from about 10-20 people that show up on a consistent basis including myself.

Where you live at?

Grew up in Orange County here but live in Raleigh now...most everywhere you can at least get crap DSL internet through your phone provider....though if you have sprint and get LTE in future it'll be faster than the DSL provided in those areas like where my rents live...boonies pulling less than 1Mbps dl on bell south/att DSL. Lol

That is good news, but does that mean it will cover all of the map that I see on this Site for the Raleigh/Durham market or something closer to their original Wi-Max footprint? That was the main point of my original question, since I'm just outside of their current "4G" area.

I'm in Franklin County, about 12 miles north of Wake Forest. Unfortunately, I can't get DSL or Cable where I am. I'm only 5 miles from the C.O. downtown (which is at the very edge for DSL) but our phone lines run past our street and then back so we're actually even further away from a DSL point of view. And cable, although only about 1.5 miles away, has no interest coming up the nearest main road because there aren't enough houses.

My 3G speeds are pretty slow (250-300k up, 30-50k down) during the best times of day but seem to just tank around 5-6pm every day. But that's something I need to post on the 3G forum and start calling Sprint to bug them about.

Thanks everyone for the help and replies.

The deployment within a market is variable. However, it appears that Sprint NV Contractors are deploying entire markets within a deployment, not just the chief cities. In Chicago, Austin and Boston, it appears they are starting out in the rurals and working their way in toward the denser parts of the markets. This does not guarantee all markets will work this way.

If this trend holds, most likely this will occur in the RDU market first. Start in the southern part of the market around Fayetteville area and work their way up around the Raleigh/Durham perimeter. Then start working their way in the 540 loop. That would be my guess.

As we get more specific info about deployment within a market, we will pass it on to all of you. So far, Chicago is the only market I have received in-depth cluster deployment schedules for.

Thanks Robert, and everyone, for the helpful info. Glad to hear that Raleigh/Durham made the second round list.

One other question on the map image that's in the announcement from today, is the actual map itself is available? I'd like to be able to click around and find where some cell sites are. I've used Open Signal on my android phone to try to find which tower I'm connecting to but when I drove past where it's telling me the tower is I don't find a tower.

I see a few towers in the area, a few miles away, but I don't know which is Sprint versus Verizon, AT&T, etc. And those are a bit south of where it's telling me I'm connected.

It is not public. It's my own personal resource. It is something I am trying to work out logistics for to open up to our S4GRU Sponsor members. But will likely involve accepting a confidentiality agreement to get access to.

I have signed NDAs with Sprint, Motorola, and Toyota already, so I can ship you a physically signed agreement if you wish.

Or you could take my electronic signature.

    • As far as I know it's ubiquitous. Ultimately the network decides if you should use VoNR vs VoLTE but pretty much anytime my phone is in standalone mode and I place a call, it goes over NR.   Yup, it was terrible. After a while, I just connected to the WiFi, and that worked fine at about 90Mbps. I get the feeling that rather than doing a "real" upgrade where they install new antennas, upgrade backhaul, etc., T-Mobile instead installed new radios onto the existing and already overloaded DAS and called it a day, which isn't enough. Compared to Yankee Stadium, where they actually went and deployed new antennas/radios for their n41 upgrade, and you're able to get upwards of 200Mbps at sold-out games, Arthur Ashe really is a joke. What's worse is that the folks in their NOC likely know this already, but no effort is being made to change that. I'm not asking for T-Mobile to deploy mmWave everywhere like Verizon but there is a real use case for it at stadiums.
    • Does anyone know how well implemented is VoNR in the 5 boroughs. Does anyone use it? I have an iPhone 15 Pro. Does anyone know if T-Mobile is still working on upgrading their network? It seems like the service has gone down. My phone struggles in parts of the Belt Pkwy, and data is slow.
    • I come to the US Open men’s semifinals and finals every year, and I’ve never been able to use my T-Mobile phone successfully. Usually AT&T is the top performer—good to hear Verizon has upped their game.
    • One sector down, two more to go — — — — —  I was at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the U.S. Open today and the good news is that there is an n25/41 DAS setup throughout USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. From the "boardwalk" to the outdoor concession area, to inside the stadium; you connect to standalone n41 and n25 everywhere via oDAS and iDAS. The bad news is that in the actual stadium it's beyond useless. While I saw strong coverage as indicated by signal bars and I was able to make calls and send texts, there was no data throughput at all. Running a speed test failed 9 out of 10 times. The only time I got a speed test to work was by switching to LTE funnily enough or by using NSA 5G where the test would initiate via LTE and then n41 would kick in giving me ~20Mbps. T-Mobile has so much traffic on their 5G network that now n41 gets bogged down before LTE. That was a first for me! In the stadium in the same area Verizon got 1.2Gbps on mmWave and LTE kept timing out when trying to test it. My Boost line on AT&T got upwards of 150Mbps on C-band and I know they have mmWave deployed as I saw their Nokia mmWave antennas deployed but I was unable to test it. In the outdoor concession area T-Mobile performed well getting over 150Mbps on n41. AT&T in these areas saw over 250Mbps on C-band and I didn't get the opportunity to test Verizon there. It just seems like 140MHz n41 is not enough capacity for the amount of people inside the stadium. Hopefully T-Mobile is considering deploying n258 to all of these stadiums since they now own that mmWave nationwide. It'd make a world of difference in terms of capacity at these venues.
