EVDO and 1X, different towers?

I started using mikejeep's Signal Check Pro this week and noticed an oddity driving yesterday. I was right next to a Sprint tower and my 1xRTT was -52dBm, an incredibly strong signal, while my EV-DO was -103, an incredibly weak signal. Is it possible for a single CDMA chipset to be attached to different towers for 1xRTT vs. EV-DO?

 

It seems that the 1xRTT was hooked to the tower I was next to and the EVDO was hooked to a tower a couple of miles away.

This can happen a lot, and it is happening a lot with the lte development. U can be connected to one tower for voice/3g and different tower for lte. Also this will even change more and more with lte 10 advance, that technology can change you to a different tower if that one your on is starting to get overloaded or close to threshold they set. Oh and when 800 comes into play more(if u have a phone with 800). U could connect to one tower for 800 voice, one for 3g and different one for 4g. It is crazy how it works. Some may say this is crazy, overall though. I think it is going to be great for network management to make sure u have the best network experience possible.

I knew the possibility existed between LTE and CDMA, but I wasn't aware that the two parts of CDMA could be connected to different sites at the same time.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Note II not being SVDO capable, I thought this splitting of sites across 1X/EV was impossible. Is this not correct?

 

Or were you on the MoPho Q?

This is true of even non SVDO devices. Its just that both sessions are not active at the very exact same moment. You maintain a 1x connection at one site and it keeps checking in every few seconds. And you pretty much are dedicated to EVDO. But if a call comes in or a text, it switches over to 1x only until the conclusion of the call or text.

Yep, 1X and EVDO are considered different networks as they are on different carriers.

 

So what you're saying is, it's entirely possible to be "connected" to two different sites simultaneously, one for 1x, one for EVDO, due to the fact that it maintains two sessions (over time division?).

Yes. But I don't like the term time division to be used here, because that could imply something completely different...like TDD. However, that is an effective way of understanding it. It would take SVDO to be able to do both exactly at the same moment, but to have your phone connected to a different 1x and EVDO site is common...especially in a densely deployed area.

Yes, CDMA1X and EV-DO have to be on different channels and can be in different bands.

That EV-DO Rev A indicator references the PCS carrier (e.g. PCS 0650 that you listed earlier). Network type indicator usually reflect the highest protocol revision network to which you are connected. EV-DO Rev A is a higher protocol revision than is CDMA1X. If you were connected to LTE, it would indicate that instead.

Hmm, you will need to post some engineering screen caps for us to diagnose fully what you are seeing.

Where are you located?

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that means your phone is seeing 1x on 800mhz right now.

It is totally possible, for instance when Sprint did not have EVDO in my area they had Alltel EVDO set as our native EVDO. When I went into the debug screen on my HTC Mogul I was connected to Sprint 1x voice on PCS and Alltel EVDO on 850. It didn't create any real issues and those were definitely coming from different sites. It was cool at home as I had an Alltel site half a mile from my house and Sprint had no coverage in my home until I got an Airave. My phone would use the Airave for 1x and EVDO from the Alltel site. Nothing crazy and worked great.

      (Sorry I never answered your last e-mail.  It's going to be time-consuming, so I've been dragging my feet.) I'm on FiOS and my service has been okay.  A few weeks ago, I was having an odd issue where certain websites were very slow to load, and it persisted until I rebooted the router.  Not entirely sure what was going on there.  But otherwise, no issues.  What happens if you ping or traceroute during these outages? - Trip

      If so, I'm wanting to see if any others of you have been having intermittent internet issues.   The last week or two, internet just seems to intermittently stop/pause for various periods of time....when the halt/pause lets up throughput will seem normal/very snappy as you'd expect on a 1 Gig line, until its not again.  My desk with both personal PC and work laptop are in our basement with a Cat 6 run straight from the Verizon router.  I've mostly noted it when trying to go through and clean out mail from my hotmail account I've had a few decades now (to be clear off that mention, I don't have decades worth of mail pending ha - like 100-200 unreads max if that each time I go through them), but I know its not something relegated to only the outlook.live.com endpoint because I check other tabs/sites when the issues crop up and they're hanging/spinning too. I've not yet tried calling VZ tech support and wanted to check/poll for others here to see if anyone using the service might have been wrestling with similar issues.   Addendum:  Both the ONT box (in our living room, not outside) and the white standup VZ router have been cycled before a couple times.  Have also tried changing between ethernet ports on the back for the Cat 6 cable with no change over long term behavior.
