According to the sensority map there is some aggressive LTE rolling out in north Austin this weekend. Friday I got my iPhone 5 and there was no LTE south of 620, now it's come down 183 all the way to 360! I'm across mopac from the domain apple store but no LTE here yet but the LTE surrounds me...

robert i'm frustrated because i've been so excited about lte towers coming live in the austin area. now i'm finding lte everywhere but it's super slow. here's my speedtest results:

 

lte:

.87 mbps

.80 mbps

.02 mbps

.28 mbps

 

3g:

2.31 mbps

1.77 mbps

1/24 mbps

 

 

WHAT GIVES??? if i look at the sensorly map and go to where a lte connection was reported, i have to stop my car, put it into airplane mode, wait, then switch back and THEN i'll see the 4g icon. once i start driving it will switch from 4g to 3g and will not switch back. are these lte sites not turned on fully?

 

is there a setting on my phone that's not correct? i'm pretty tech savy, just not sure what the heck is going on. it's sad my girlfriends wi-max S2 blows away my lte S3.

could be you are on the very far edge of the tower that is active. Check your signal strength (not bars). Lte is great where you have a good signal. Until the rollout is complete, there will be areas where it may show u have lte, but the tower is too far away to be any good for you, just wait until the tower that is closest to you becomes active with lte

You have a super weak LTE signal, and you just don't know it because the bars in your signal strength indicator are showing 1x, which is likely pretty strong.

 

Everyone in Austin that has a super strong LTE signal are reporting high 20's and into the 30's Mbps DL speed.

I have noticed that when a tower goes active it can take time before the speeds become constant. In the Houston market I was getting terrible speeds in the Kingwood/Humble area and others were getting great speeds. This was the same in the Woodlands/Spring area. Today my speeds are much more constant. I am not sure why this happens but it should get better with time.

Was able to finally get signal long enough to get a speed test.

Location: Chick-Fil-A Parking Lot at South East Corner of Mo-Pac and Hwy 290. It was weak but able to complete a speed test.

Not great LTE speeds but better than 3g.

Just had my iPhone 5 jump into LTE here in Rockford IL, right outside Cherryvale Mall

yuuuup, you can sometimes catch it in too, but the west side is dead zone haha

I have no LTE connection to report but I called sprint today for something else and asked the rep if he knew when LTE would be on in NYC. He actually called me back 10 minutes later and told me that there are towers onion my zip code and NYC should be fully complete within 6 months. I get nothing on my phone but 3G the LTE is on, hopefully soon.

anyone else having issues with sensorly? i logged a 50 mile journey travelling thru all of the already marked lte zones, and not a single lte spot was recorded on my phone. i stopped the car, and toggled airplane mode and bam, 4g. once i started driving it switched to 3g. i was able to do a speedtest in a 4g zone and got .26 down and .07 up. what's wrong with this picture??

Some of the new LTE signals may have been turned off or blocked after a day or so. I logged some places yesterday not previously recorded, but a couple hours later could not replicate earlier sightings. Remember, the Austin market is not officially live yet. Such behavior is consistent with what we have read about in other developing markets.

Two things come to mind. Number one...you may have your Sensorly settings to upload only when on WiFi.

 

Number two...you may have had a poor or non existent mobile connection when you hit Stop. If you do have Sensorly enabled to upload over the mobile network, but you hit stop when you are connected to one of those really poor performing 3G sites, the upload may fail.

 

It seems that almost all of my Sensorly plottings that fail to show up are when I am in a poor 3G environment. I've started running speed test in RootMetrics before I hit Stop on Sensorly. If the upload looks solid, I will then hit Stop.

I have had a consistent 4g signal all morning at 3500 S. Lamar. Mapped on Sensorly a bunch of hits from Oltorf to Ben White along S. Lamar. I think the tower is located right behind Matt's El Rancho.

It would sure help if there was a Sensorly app for Iphone.

 

I've asked Sensorly before about it, and they said they couldn't get enough access to the signal strength to do it.

 

Weird thing is that RootMetrics has apps for both iOS and Android that seems to do the same thing.

 

I've ran the RootMetrics app on my Galaxy S Vibrant but don't have my iPhone 5 yet to try it out there. It might be a better long-term solution for signal mapping since it's cross-platform.

no no robert... wifi settings are seperate and should have nothing to do on how it receives and plots a 3g or 4g signal. i'm not having upload issues, i'm having capturing issues. if a 4g signal is present and the phone is currently in 3g mode it will not list a point under 4g unless the phone actually receives a strong 4g signal for an extended period of time, enough for the phone to actually switch the icon from 3g to 4g and then it will start logging the 4g points. when the phone is in 3g mode it will log 3g and miss the 4g spots, when it's in 4g mode it will log both 4g and 3g. if you look at the maps the 4g lte points are off a little.

 

i'm having difficulty even finding a decent lte connection, most attempts to do a speed test fail. at this point in time, no live lte in austin is strong enough to give me a connection so i can attempt a speed test while driving down the road at 70mph. that's the real test if you ask me.

I think that answers your question bro. Must just not be strong enough yet or your phone's trippin. Also, I think 1) tryin to mess with sensorly n speedtest while doing 70mph is a lil on the not so safe side lol hope you're ridin shotty, and 2) doin 70mph is just isn't a great test for a network in infantcy...

Reasonably certain that I'm getting an LTE connection from HO03XC319, Netmonitor is showing me connected to that tower and I'm getting 4G for the first time at this location. I uploaded it to Sensorly, and a new dot showed up.

NetMonitor does not show LTE sites on their maps. In their app, they will show connection type as LTE. But then in the map, it never shows the LTE site it is connected to, but rather the 1x (voice) site. And these are very often different.

I just got a small but valuable nugget of information from the Sprint Store in South West Austin, Located at Mo-Pac and 290.

 

The guy there told me there is only one tower in South Austin with LTE turned on at this point and its someplace on S. Lamar. So any signal hits in that area of town for a bout a 5 mile radius are the same tower source. (A Pretty Impressive Range!) EDIT: Looking at my other screen captures for the signal strength confirms the same tower. He also said there were 2 confirmed LTE towers on in the North Austin Round Rock area but did not know more precise locations. Once LTE goes officially live (no date given) There will be many more towers. That will have it and signal will not be an issue.

 

While talking with the guy my phone would go in and out of 4g inside the store.

I did get a screen shot while in the DEBUG menu to capture my signal strength. Which was WEAK.

I think that description is not far from the truth, and I believe the number of live LTE towers is still pretty small. The Sensorly tracks are thin and those tracks are flaky on the ground. But I will quibble a bit. Over in the Sponsor thread, where we can freely discuss tower details from the interactive S4GRU maps, we have empirically detected at least three live towers in North Austin and Round Rock, although only two of them have been pinpointed geographically. In addition, we have documented a few other towers photographically with NV/LTE equipment mounted that are not yet live.
