MacinJosh
Why am I not surprised, but happy to see this. Very encouraging news for expansion of Clearwire to smaller towns down the road.
gopher_otis
Does Clear even have any rural coverage? I know they don't anywhere near me.
S4GRU
Does Clear even have any rural coverage? I know they don't anywhere near me. They have hundreds of rural Protection Sites. Robert - Posted from my E4GT with ICS using Forum Runner
4GHoward
The problem is that they don't have enough Rural Sites.

MacinJosh
This is great though. By joining the RCA, it means there is a chance for Clearwire to expand beyond their original LTE deployment and even hit smaller towns, not just what Sprint wants them to do. gopher_otis
They have hundreds of rural Protection Sites. Robert - Posted from my E4GT with ICS using Forum Runner I'm not sure what the term Protection Site means. Though now that they are part of the RCA, I think a total buyout of Clear by Sprint is even more imminent.
ericdabbs
I love that Clearwire is joining the RCA. The RCA has gotten strong within the past year with Sprint, Tmobile, Leap, and Clearwire join the association to combat AT&T and Verizon. Lets just hope that Clearwire can benefit from the RCA membership in terms of expanding its coverage at some point in the future after it covers the huge metro markets. iansltx
Honestly the RCA should rename themselves to "Non-Duopoly Cellular Association." I sincerely doubt that MetroPCS, Leap or TMo will make a serious push for rural service any time soon,,,they don't own cellular-band spectrum and have historically stuck to urban/suburban markets for the primary thrust of their expansion. Clear wire joining is even more laughable. Sure, they have deployments live in places like Amarillo...plus the Protection Sites...but their spectrum is too high frequency to offer anything reliably in rural areas without a high-gain (fixed) antenna. Fixed wireless works just fine over that frequency, but mobile...yeah, no.
WiWavelength
Honestly the RCA should rename themselves to "Non-Duopoly Cellular Association." Did you miss that the RCA renamed itself the Competitive Carriers Association several months ago? It is even referenced in the first sentence of this thread. iansltx
Why yes, as a matter of fact, I did Especially with everyone mentioning the possibility of a rural CLWR deployment.

digiblur
They have hundreds of rural Protection Sites. Robert - Posted from my E4GT with ICS using Forum Runner Yep. They have some towns covered in BFE where there is no CDMA coverage. Sent from my C64 w/Epyx FastLoad cartridge
pyroscott
There are a couple towers in BFE Minnesota, right by the base I work at. They are the legacy 3G towers though. Clearwire has left them to rot. xcharles718
Reading Clearwire and Rural in the same sentence just seems weird. Maybe a fixed-antenna broadband play can be made.
