Sprint 4G Rollout Updates

Tuesday, February 4, 2014 - 3:30 PM MST

After a long time of no news on the Sprint Direct Connect app, there is finally something to report. On February 3rd, Sprint launched its Direct Connect Now app on six devices, plus announced three other devices that will get support for it in the future.

The app is free to download, but some plans have it as a service add-on for $5 a month for unlimited use. For other plans it's a free add on feature.

Phones now supported

  • LG G2
  • Galaxy S4
  • Galaxy Note 3
  • LG G Flex
  • LG Optimus F3
  • Kyocera Hydro Edge

Devices coming soon

  • S4 Mini
  • Galaxy Mega
  • Galaxy S4 Spark Edition

Now I haven't had any real world experience with it yet, but we would love to hear from people to see how it works compared to old Nextel Direct Connect.

Here is what we wrote about Direct Connect back in 2012: http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/entry-127-sprint-direct-connecttheres-an-app-for-that/

From what I read, the press release says it's free on most plans, $5 on others. Not sure which plans qualify for "free" but I thought I would point that out.

It says the following on the press release

Sprint Direct Connect service is included for no additional charge on many service plans or available for an additional $5 per month for other plans.

I am not quite sure what plans qualify for this SDC service is included.  I assume you can always just call up Sprint and find out if your service plan includes SDC service for free.

Sorry about that point, updating. I'm on Framily plan and have to pay the $5 for it, maybe non framily doesn't. Let me know what plan your on and if you have to pay or not. Thanks for the info all!

I used to work for a company that used the direct connect, as soon as it releases for the S4T I'm going to try to get a hold of it and try it out with some friends that are also Sprint.

It may come in handy for our annual pilgrimage to Oshkosh Wisconsin.

I am on the 1500 family plan and it is also a $5 add on for my account, too. I figured the newer plans would be free but now I wonder just which plans include it as a free add on.

I had two option...One was a free option that was label "administratively enable" and then there was the $5 unlimited option

On my SERO-P plan it has both "Unltd Nationwide Direct Connect" and "Unlimited Group Connect" listed under "Plan Includes" and has for quite sometime...although i am using a nexus 5 now.

Too little way too late for me.  Myself and all of my associates (business, public safety and personal) have adopted Zello as our DC replacement.  No going back now.  Shoot, 90 percent of them still have phones that aren't supported.  LOL.

Sure has heck not dropping another $5.00 a month on it on top of the "My All In' plan.  Apparently not as all in as it says..

There are a ton of apps out there that allow very similar connectivity for free. I'm pretty disappointed that Sprint charges for this app, even more so because I just bought an LG Flex and a LG G2!

Showing as compatible from the play store on a Sprint HTC One Kit Kat.

Edit:

Interesting, it lets me install the app, but not provision the services over on the sprint site. Very odd.

To provision it, you need to log into your Sprint account, change services, and add the Direct Connect option. It will be either $0 or $5, depending on the plan. Based on above comments, it appears it's only free on SERO and Simply Everything plans.....

Yeah, I looked there - doesn't show as a provisioning option at all on an Everything Data share plan. App told me it wasn't provisioned either. Assume it's because the device isn't listed in sprint systems as compatible with the provisioning option? *shrug*

About time. Companies like Kodiak Networks have had Android, iOS, BREW, and Java SIM based PTT clients on handsets for years. Actually, they now have OMA PoC clients that run on LTE networks.
