This is a pretty awesome topic so I wanted to contribute some awesome stuff. :)

These are the new Ericsson AIR Integrated Antennas with integrated radio tops. Notice no RRU. :) T-Mobile is exclusively deploying these as far as I know. They're dual mode 2x2 MIMO, Release 10 stuff. Snapped a few shots earlier today:

Later I did my research and here is the official stuff:

Does anyone know the cost on a set of theses?

oh ok because I have an airwave in the because there 3G signal in my house was only about 2-3 bars. I turned off the airwave and the LTE signal give me all bars sometimes but drops down to 3 the most.

If you have signal that great without the Airave, you are better off sending that back to Sprint now and just use WiFi when at home. The Airave adds some additional taxes on your bill because it technically has a "phone" line so if you have good service without it, send it back and save some money and hassle of running it through your internet connection.

Here is a set of Nokia Siemens panels with their shiny new Flexi Base Station mounted in the middle. It's a T-Mobile modernized site in Ann Harbor area, posted by jsimp2006 on HoFo.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here are some new pics of a crew putting panels and RRUs into a non-Sprint array here in my area.

Sprint is the 3rd rack (from the top), I think.

The contractor installing this array is ESA Engineering of Cedar Park, TX.

That's a T-Mobile's top rack, using NSN equipment, that box between the middle Antenna and a guy on the left is NSN Flexi Base Stations. That's a Release 10 capable array.

Yeah if you look at the bottom of the panels you see 2 actuators I believe but there is only 1 cable feeding the panel which signifies alone its not sprint... Can see how one could get confused as it looks like they have 2 small RUUs hanging below the panel...

Yeah, I figured it was T. They have been upgrading their sites in Austin at a much faster pace than Sprint.

T-Mobile already has advanced backhaul at its urban sites. Raising new panels and base stations is not easy, but T-Mobile does not have to wait on backhaul for those sites. The problem that T-Mobile faces is that it has too many rural sites that not only lack advanced backhaul but also are still GSM only.

Here's the finished, buttoned-up rack. Most of us have come to the consensus that it is a T-Mobile rack. Does anyone have the specs or model numbers of those antennas? Looks like they are dual cellular and pcs/aws band? Could TMobile be acquiring 700mhz spectrum here in Central TX?

I would also love to know the model of those panels. I'm guessing these aren't NSN Liquid Radio, as those are rumored to be delayed, but the BTS is definitely their Flexi.

I'm pretty sure T-Mobile isn't acquiring 700Mhz. They're 99.9% PCS + AWS.

Probably not. The other carriers are pretty hush hush about their deployment and Sprint would've been the same until we got amazing people like Robert starting this whole thing up.

The radio in the picture is a NSN FXFB running GSM and 1900 umts antennas are normally Andrews TMBXX_6517-A2M's

I assume AWS UMTS and LTE is also supported with the same setup.

What are the specs of those antennas? They look an awful lot like the ones AT&T uses here. AT&T has 700-850 MHz /1700-2100 MHz dual band antennas on most of their sites.

I need some help. benifactor posted this in the Vegas permit thread, and the site is supposed to have 6 RRU's, and I know the 3 are definitely on the top, but what about the other 3 boxes. Are they RRU's too?

Why would a site only have 6RRUs?... Only 2 sectors on it for whatever reason?... Because there would be 3 RRUs per sector/antenna.

Is ALU doing Vegas or is Samsung? The antenna looks like the curved alu ones kinda FWIW... Kinda interested in the pink logo on the old antennas myself...

Vegas is ALU to my knowledge. Samsung does Northern California & Lower central valley. Alu does SoCal and the east from there (cough vegas cough)

    • This has been approved.. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/fcc-approves-t-mobiles-deal-to-purchase-mint-mobile/
    • In the conference call they had two question on additional spectrum. One was the 800 spectrum. They are not certain what will happen, thus have not really put it into their plans either way (sale or no sale). They do have a reserve level. Nationwide 800Mhz is seen as great for new technologies which I presume is IOT or 5g slices.  T-Mobile did not bite on use of their c-band or DOD.  mmWave rapidly approaching deadlines not mentioned at all. FWA brushes on this as it deals with underutilized spectrum on a sector by sector basis.  They are willing to take more money to allow FWA to be mobile (think RV or camping). Unsure if this represents a higher priority, for example, FWA Mobile in RVs in Walmart parking lots working where mobile phones need all the capacity. In terms of FWA capacity, their offload strategy is fiber through joint ventures where T-Mobile does the marketing, sales, and customer support while the fiber company does the network planning and installation.  50%-50% financial split not being consolidated into their books. I think discussion of other spectrum would have diluted the fiber joint venture discussion. They do have a fund which one use is to purchase new spectrum. Sale of the 800Mhz would go into this. It should be noted that they continue to buy 2.5Ghz spectrum from schools etc to replace leases. They will have a conference this fall  to update their overall strategies. Other notes from the call are 75% of the phones on the network are 5g. About 85% of their sites have n41, n25, and n71, 90% 5g.  93% of traffic is on midband.  SA is also adding to their performance advantage, which they figure is still ahead of other carriers by two years. It took two weeks to put the auction 108 spectrum to use at their existing sites. Mention was also made that their site spacing was designed for midrange thus no gaps in n41 coverage, while competitors was designed for lowband thus toggles back and forth for n77 also with its shorter range.
    • The manual network selection sounds like it isn't always scanning NR, hence Dish not showing up. Your easiest way to force Dish is going to be forcing the phone into NR-only mode (*#*#4636#*#* menu?), since rainbow sims don't support SA on T-Mobile.
    • "The company’s unique multi-layer approach to 5G, with dedicated standalone 5G deployed nationwide across 600MHz, 1.9GHz, and 2.5GHz delivers customers a consistently strong experience, with 85% of 5G traffic on sites with all three spectrum bands deployed." Meanwhile they are very close to a construction deadline June 1 for 850Mhz of mmWave in most of Ohio covering 27500-28350Mhz expiring 6/8/2028. No reported sightings.  Buildout notice issue sent by FCC in March 5, 2024 https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/letterPdf/LetterPdfController?licId=4019733&letterVersionId=178&autoLetterId=13060705&letterCode=CR&radioServiceCode=UU&op=LetterPdf&licSide=Y&archive=null&letterTo=L  No specific permits seen in a quick check of Columbus. They also have an additional 200Mhz covering at 24350-25450 Mhz and 24950-25050Mhz with no buildout date expiring 12/11/2029.

They're completely avoiding talking about mmWave.
