    Big news for the Clearwire market transition to CA from Dayton OH by nowerlater: First the EARFCN was moved after the Dayton Expedience network was shutdown with Cincinnati WiMAX (who even knew Expedience was still alive until the Mobile Citizen court order listing places like Anchorage and Duluth, MN).

    Potential Sprint rural buildout by 2016

    Anyone heard any new news about this rural expansion ?

    I would not expect any news coverage. This could be very similar to WiMAX protection sites from years ago.  Only some were shown on coverage maps.  A few could only be detected with spectrum analyzers.  They were very low priority once installed.  My guess is that setting up these sites is taking money away from more noticeable expansion, at least until there is more CAPex funding. 

     

    My hope of course is that they do put them on the coverage maps.

    Question. Does anyone know why the majority of the Clearwire B41 band sites specifically throughout Columbus but specifically in the Whitehall and Bexley area are tremendously slower than the than the Sprint Towers? I'm thinking it is dated backhaul but I thought backhaul was updated during the Network Vision tear outs?

    The tower by me is the same way. I think that's due to those towers are operating with WiMAX still.

    Correct.  The WiMAX was scheduled to be turned off several months ago, but kept running by court order until the end of the month.  Only then can Sprint start to convert many Clear sites in this market to Sprint B41 and add third carrier to the many B41 Sprint sites.  This should be part of the Next Generation Network upgrades that will hopefully begin soon.  Other upgrades are still continuing in this market including Bexley.  There are articles on all of this and Columbus located http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1-the-wall/ 

     

    To get more specific information on Bexley and other places make a $10-20 donation depending on your circumstances to help keep this website operational.  You will then have a wealth of information on B25 LTE (including high capacity sites, 10x10 LTE, and B25 second carrier) and 1x800 along with 3G.  B41 and B26 LTE information is in the next tier (Premier).

    LTE Discovery App for S4GRU

    Is it actually displaying the true EARFCN for you? On my Nexus devices, I just see a generic range that corresponds to the current LTE band. If so, that is awesome and they definitely have a leg up on my developer skills!

    Well when wifi calling performs as I've shown above, it definitely won't be my preference...and I'll fight to keep my airave if I have to. However, when I called the direct line for airave support, 866.556.7310, they were eager to replace the airave, the ac adapter, or both. It was my decision of whichever one I wanted. I told them I wasn't sure if the ac adapter quit, or the airave itself quit..but it wouldn't come on at all -- no lights.

     

    After the phone call, I used my fluke to test the ac adapter and it was fine -- still outputting 12.2v (says 12v 2a)..

    So the airave was the culprit and i'm glad I asked for the entire thing to be replaced.

    Looks like I have to call them back and have them turn up the broadcast area. Seems they don't put the replacement under the same provisioning as the original (i had a ticket for my broken one to be turned up..).

     

    Interesting numbers.  Thanks.  Does HD Voice show up on the G4 when using WiFi calling?

     

    Airave might be easier in the sense that if WiFi is also enabled the phone calls and data use will be separate.  I still would set the QOS in your Nighthawk enable WMM (Wi-Fi multimedia (5 GHz a/n/ac) from what you have shown above.     on pages 105-106, else try the Dynamic QOS starting on page 101.  This way when either the upload or download is fully saturated the phone calls should still be possible.

    I guess you're missing something..because I've had an airave since the very first one hit the market back in 08..and had Samsung branding on it. And the same sh*tty connection that I've always had. I know what works, and the airave is better than wifi calling. The current airave supports 6 simultaneous connections....3 voice calls and 3 data sessions.

     

    While the airave is designed to handle just traffic from a phone (read:femtocell), wifi calling has to battle with everything else on the network and is subject to any other traffic that might be happening at that time. While the real-world application differs from the "it's supposed to" application, I have no problem using 2-3 lines at once on the airave, while I have issues using just 1 line on wifi calling and nothing else can happen while that wifi call is in progress. Once the airave gets here, I'll be glad to post some screens from my Nighthawk X8 (R8500) router with wifi calling while in a call, then post a screen of the airave traffic while in a call...

    I already know which one eats up the most...but if it'll help anyone understand what I'm saying, so be it.

    I might be missing something, but the airrave is connected to that same connection that your wifi calling would be as well, no? Back when I had an airrave I remember it using bandwidth for the 3G connection from my cable modem. I would think you would have the problem regardless of airrave / wifi calling.

    And mainly the reason I don't want to use wifi calling and use the airave is because I can't. When you have 4 devices ...or even 2 devices on wifi calling at the same time and you have a 511kbps upload speed, it tends to make it not worth even hitting the "call" button.

    For a single device, Wifi calling is fine, but once you get past that amount, you can't make phone calls if someone is 1)uploading photos/vids to cloud, 2)watching anything streaming, 3)listening to music streaming, 4)considering a google search, 5)having a thought process that involves anything internet-related...

     

    It'd be great if i had another option, but I don't.

    Is this at your house? I'm little confused. Why you need airave if you have WiFi calling enable? Why not just call on the WiFi and not use the tower? I'm not saying the problem doesn't need fixed.

    It would be great to see your the real world data comparing Airave to WiFi calling. Some of the difference may also be how your equipment is connected/configured. Sprint normally wants the Airave first, which gives it high priority. Most people also setup any VOIP also with high priority. It is also great to see the amount of bandwidth consumed. It used to be that very high quality voice took 64Kbps. I am uncertain what HD voice takes. The odds are everyone will learn something from your comparison. Looking forward to your info.

    LTE Discovery App for S4GRU

    Just wanted to say great job on adding EARFCN support to LTE Discovery! Works great on my Nexus 6P, which doesn't have an engineering screen to show that information. I actually just added a pull request to add this functionality to Signal Detector (https://github.com/lordsutch/Signal-Strength-Detector/pull/1/files) because I didn't realize you had implemented it.

     

    Is there any chance you can add the earfcn to the logs? It would be useful to be able to track it. Perhaps have a new log entry when the earfcn changes for a given GCI as well. Sprint has been shuffling their earfcns for B41 lately as they shutdown WiMAX and add more B41 carriers, and also as they've been rolling out 10x10 FDD B25.

     

    Also, are there any public Intents that could be broadcast by other apps to enable/disable settings in LTE Discovery? Specifically, I'd like the ability to turn Crowdsource, Live Notifications, and Site Logging on and off programatically. I'd prefer not to have them running all the time, but if there were public Intents then I could use Tasker to control it and enable those features when I'm driving and/or charging, then disable them afterward. I'm not asking that you make a Tasker plugin for it, just to have a BroadcastReceiver to listen for intents and update the app settings accordingly.

     

    Lastly, is it possible to add the ability to import/export a database of known site locations? Flompholph compiles the data from market specific tracking spreadsheets and makes a site database that can be imported into Signal Check Pro. This allows it to display the name and location of the site (drawn from a "user_note" field), along with showing the user_notes and distance for neighbor cells. It would be nice to have this functionality in LTE Discovery as well, and would allow the actual site location to be shown in the Map tab.

    There is a confident requirement for the site info. We could not have them crowd sourced. But it would be great to allow them to be loaded to be displayed along with the GCI and on local maps.

    OK, completed reviewing all six area Golden West sites. Just live on 3 out of 6. Not live at Robbinsdale, Box Elder nor Ellsworth AFB sites.

     

    Nothing will connect. Not Sprint device or Project Fi. Will keep trying.

    I was wondering if you checked the WiMAX Substantial Service Site on East Philadelphia Street (near the Popeye's Chicken) in Rapid City.  In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, those were taken over by Cellcom for Roaming+.  If true that might give you a better idea of were to look elsewhere, since those sites may have long term leases.
