  1. That depends on the type of antenna utilized. Some directional antennas can have high gain for both uplink and downlink. Wi-Fi extension is a good example of this. Ask digiblur how far he shoots a beam of his home Wi-Fi and gets usable service on his handset with its little omnidirectional antenna. AJ
  2. Yes and no. That is true for FDD but not for TDD. TD-LTE is almost the spitting image of WiMAX. AJ
  3. That is another interesting possibility. If it works, it basically gives existing subs the freedom to join Framily groups with absolution. I do wonder, though, if Sprint will be auditing Framily groups for these kinds of shenanigans. Yes, I never said that Framily members who switch to the same address, for example, would become legally liable for all accounts under that address. However, as you note from your own experience, lack of legal liability does not necessarily stop debt collectors from trying to squeeze blood from any stone they can find. And filing a complaint or suing to stop the collection harassment is just a headache that most people do not want. I also would be a bit concerned that some of these address changes could result in actual account liability changes -- even if that is due to customer care rep error. So, once more, be cautious with this Framily group strategy. AJ

  5. In response, I am almost certain Kevin would say that he is a blogger, not a news reporter. Offering his opinion on newsworthy subjects is what he is paid to do. Like it or not, with the rapid growth of non traditional media, this is the route that journalism is increasingly going. The problem with this paradigm shift is that the average readership may not be informed and/or intelligent enough to interpret these essentially "infotainment" pieces through the appropriate filters.   6. Supporting numerous LTE bands was once deemed difficult, but that is no longer the case. The Nexus 5, case in point, supports all of the present LTE bands that Sprint and T-Mobile combined both use -- plus even two extra, band 5 and band 17, for AT&T. Regardless, there is no way that Sprint-T-Mobile would divest all of T-Mobile's acquired AWS spectrum. That would effectively pull the plug on the T-Mobile-MetroPCS network. AJ

This is interesting, but I think the potential downside to changing billing addresses in order to combine existing accounts into one Framily group is the possibility of one of the separately liable accounts going into default. At that point, collections may try to seek restitution from anyone at that address. So, I would be careful with how this is used to form Framily groups. AJ
  8. Did these occur in Tyler? Unfortunately, I do not think that either was an actual connection. And even if EARFCN 8569 was, it was not in spectrum that is licensed to Sprint in the Tyler BTA. AJ

  10. I have not known Kevin nor Gigaom to expunge comments, though they might be moderated. I hope the comments have not been deleted. If so, that represents a definite change in tone at Gigaom. As for Sensorly, I think I know what, if any Kevin's response will be. Sensorly relies solely on user submissions, so that does not necessarily present a level playing field for all wireless operators. Now, the problem I have with that is the assumption that Sprint users map more on Sensorly than do other wireless subs. Even if that is true, why? And what does that say about Sprint users? Are they more personally invested in their wireless network? If so, is that a bad thing? AJ
  11. What briank101's sweeps showed was that the acquired USCC PCS B block disaggregation was definitely not in use in his area. Now, how large that area is depends on the dynamic range of the spectrum analyzer. He has a standalone Agilent that probably cost something like $20,000, while I have just a USB connected analyzer that cost $1500. Basically, I doubt the Agilent is any slouch in the specs department. However, his lab is also quite proximate to the closest macro site, so that signal could swamp more distant signals, causing them to fall below the noise floor. But I digress. You probably want the shorter answer. Here goes. The number of CDMA1X and EV-DO carriers varies from site to site. Some sites are for capacity; other sites are there just for coverage. Those carrier cards cost money, as does the backhaul. So, CDMA2000 sites have tended to go variably with the minimum number of carriers needed. That is why the Chicago site in question shows some unused Sprint channels and no USCC spectrum activity -- at least, not yet. AJ

  20. You cannot categorically tell them apart with just frequency domain RF analysis. Sometimes, I note slightly greater EIRP for EV-DO carriers in my RF sweeps. But that is certainly not foolproof. So, you are better off using your engineering screen to figure out the CDMA1X and EV-DO carrier assignments on a given site. AJ
  21. If this were nearby and the people inside the stadiums were on Wi-Fi, then game crowds would no longer suck up all of the capacity on the surrounding macro sites. AJ
  22. The data usage per game that clogs the network is the issue, not the total data usage across the entire season. So, baseball and football are really no different in that regard. AJ

Otherwise, all of the big four could form one auction consortium to ensure that the license bids would just meet the reserve minimums, then divvy up the winnings after the auction. So, the smarter move might be for either SoftBank or Deutsche Telekom to sit out the 600 MHz auction. Let the other acquire a 600 MHz cache, then announce a network sharing joint venture. AJ
