Help!!??? Someone well-versed in network admin

Ok, here goes my story. Some may have seen me mention this, but I haven't said much about it...although it's been a huge problem for me the past TWO years:

 

AT&T is my DSL provider. I have TWO physical DSL lines, two separate networks, etc.

My 2nd DSL line was installed in 2012 (may)...never had an issue with it as far as usage goes. It stays well below the AT&T data cap of 150gb/month.

 

My primary line, on the other hand, it has MAJOR issues. I'm having problems, and have been having problems with AT&T accusing me of going over my 150gb/month cap. And I don't mean going over by just a little. They accuse me of using anywhere from 50gb to 150gb extra per month, for the last 2 years.

So...my total usage amounts to 300/400gb month..It looks something like this:

I'm looking for some help in a program to monitor traffic.

 

I'm already using a router that has a traffic meter (no, my traffic does not match AT&T's site for per-day usages..)

 

I need somewhere to turn and something I can use to back my case...

Public service commission complaint filed...AT&T says they can't give me any credits because their "data collection is accurate"...

NO it's NOT...I know it's not. Do we stream movies? Well we used to...back before AT&T started harassing us...

 

Do I play online multiplayer games? YES..-->>>On the 2nd DSL line, which never goes above 60gb / month. What since does that make? (none to me, but ..I could be wrong)...

 

Frustrated isn't the word..I've had my fill of AT&T. If I had another option in internet..I'd be GONE...but AT&T is the ONLY provider here, so they can do as they please...

I'm thinking about contacting the local news Fox affiliate and seeing if their "Six on your side" would be interested in going after AT&T in the news for badgering a customer that's been with them since 2008 on my primary DSL line, 2012 on my 2nd line. AT&T makes a killing on me each month just in basic internet fees. Now hitting me with $20-$40 more every month ($10 for each addt'l 50gb data over the 150gb/month initial)

 

I don't really have a complicated network...

My main router that does PPPoE into my DSL modem is Netgear D7000. Connected to that is my desktop, and my TPLink Archer C3200. To that, I have my Airave - Sprint, my Netgear XAV6504 & XAV6501 powerline adapter. On the other end of XAV6504 I have a Netgear WNR2000 with DDWRT, which has my Sharp TV and Dishnet Hopper connected(I can do away with the WNR2000 as the hopper and Sharp both have wifi built in, I just preferred to use wired)...

I also use a WN3000RPv2 repeater..but the traffic through it doesn't amount to 50mb/day..so monitoring it can be added in later.

 

That's it. Wifi passwords are 14 characters long on the D7000 and Archer C3200...

WNR2000 only has local access on wifi (No SSID broadcast). The XAV PLA set doesn't have Wifi...

 

That's my story. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can use to keep a track on my usage aside from the router logs? (which I see plenty of [ACK Scan] and [DoS ATTACK] entries....which I have read can be interpreted wrong by Netgear as legit requests....

Is the router on the latest firmware?  Routers can be hacked  and used to reroute spam or DOS, but this is not common.  there are AT&T specialists available over at DSLreports.com who will look at this differently than the usual AT&T customer report reps: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/sbcdirect

Yes, since I can disclose a little more info here than just a public forum...Im a beta tester for many devices...but most betas I'm invited into are routers. All of my network devices are either up to date, or running on un-released beta firmware.

 

My 2nd DSL line has a router on it that I can't even discuss...it's not avail to the public yet, so NDA protects it...but it's current...but the D7000 is a May-released router + modem all in one.

Do side by side comparisons of routers software traffic meters to ATT's traffic meter. As well as I though Xbox one ( if you have it) detailed your monthly usage if that's your inly device using thr 2nd line. Also swapping the routers to the different DSL line would be a quick way to tell if a router is the issue or if its a mistake on their end. One test I did on ATT wireless was my Mom got overages when here phone wasnt even on , so turning Line 1 Modem off for a day or two and see if it reports data on those days. Easy test there

Are there any times during the week for a day or two that you could completely shut off the 1st connections modem and then see what AT&Ts meters show for that time period?  Maybe route all traffic through the 2nd connection for that day or two?

Have you looked at getting service through a reseller? DSLExtreme claims to have no caps on their plans: https://www.dslextreme.com/dsl/residential

 

We use them for Uverse service where we are and have had no real issues in the few months since we signed up. They also have a forum at dslreports.com that is monitored by a couple of their employees: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/dslextreme

Make a list of every device that connects to the internet through the modem you're seeing the high usage on.

 

If any PC's are in that list, do a thorough virus scan.

 

How much traffic is the Airrave sending/receiving?

 

Any torrents running?

 

Is the Dishnet hopper downloading content?

 

Without knowing what your actual router is it's going to be hard to make suggestions beyond setting up SNMP polling for the interface statistics.  Does the modem have a web interface with its' own traffic counters?

I have no choice on reseller. AT&T is only option.

 

Router: Netgear D7000.

 

It's modem and router combo. I just got it back in May. (Beta tester)

 

For comparison, D7000 was on DSL line 2 for the last two months, last month the traffic meter on D7000 was within 5 mb of at&t billing on DSL line 2. So I moved the D7000 to line 1 so I can check use with D7000.
