HTC One M9 Rumor Thread

The consistently poor camera experience from just about every tech site review is really concerning. I guess the m10 will be the ideal android phone (for someone with normal sized hands).

There are a couple Intl contributors to XDA that are showing photos taken post OTA's and they are drastically different results. Too early for a verdict imo.

Pretty sure one of the reviews I read said they hadn't seen major improvements in camera post update.

In terms of the display, out of all of the reviews I've read not one said that it was disappointing. They said that colors are slightly warmer on the newer display when compared to the one on the M8.

Additionally, everyone seems to be saying that the camera is fast to shoot and focus and that in bright light or overcast lighting, the pictures are actually pretty good. However, in low light the photos are just poor. The front facing camera is better than the competition in general. Overall the camera is pretty mediocre in the image processing department which is what makes it look bad.

What reviews have you read? MOST of them mention issues of some kind with the display.

Straight from Engadget's review, right at the top under pros and cons:

  • Screen isn't as vivid as last year's model

The M9's LCD is altogether much cooler than the M8's, which makes for crisper, more neutral whites at the expense of slightly less impactful blacks. I spend more time than I'd like to admit poking around on Instagram every day, but the difference couldn't have been any clearer than there -- colors were much punchier on the M8's screen, while the flower, puppy, graffiti and food pictures Instagram is notorious for came across as less saturated and, dare I say, neutered on the M9. Your mileage may vary (I've always preferred the slight oversaturation of AMOLED screens), but a certain dose of pop that made some photos come alive on last year's model is gone here, and I'm frankly bummed because of it.

I'm not ruling this phone out myself, but it's hard not to see the issues when most all of the reviews list those 2 items as the main issues.

This may end up being the first htc device I don't get on release day, I may just wait it out a week or two to see how it goes.

My wife is in desperate need of a replacement phone (my old one, lol) but I'm sitting on both this and the s6 for a week or so to see how the user reviews go. As much as I would like to hop on one right away, I'm going to hold off.

My girl is currently using an m8 and she really likes the m9(especially in pink) so I will at least get her one on release day if sprint gets that color.  For me I will definitely get the s6 edge on release day simply because I just love how it looks, I will also end up with an m9 for sure I just don't know when.

Do you think it's time for a device like M9 to have an option where I can disable 2G and 3G data?  When I'm at home or commuting, it's rare that I leave LTE area, but when my phone drops off LTE, it takes a while for it to come back.  Voice, of course, would remain on 3G.  Is this something ROOTed phones already allow?

Do you mean disable evdo? I'm not sure why you would want to do that, you won't get back on LTE any faster. Besides, you would still have "3G" data from 1x when you lose LTE.

There is a way on some devices to force LTE only, but voice/texts do not come through.

Well, I lose LTE for the 10 second ride in the elevator, so 3G isn't going to save me. But then I wouldn't be stuck on EVDO or 1x four minutes after getting off the elevator.

You could put your phone in LTE only mode, you would lose SMS and calls though. You can sort of work around that by using google voice integration and the hangouts dialer for data calls only but I wouldn't recommend it.

Do you have an active data session going?  If so, I have found that iphone/andriod will  not reconnect to LTE until that data session expires. I don't know if it is related to eCFSB or how the LTE scan timer is designed.

In addition, I have seen that the HTC M8 LTE scan timer is really long. Much longer than I have noted on other phones.

Your phone would have to scan LTE, which unless I'm mistaken would require dropping the evdo connection (on single radio path handsets) to do which is why it won't go back to LTE during an active data session.

According to some tweets from HTC USA, this phone goes on sale tonight at midnight on their website only and includes carrier variants not just the unlocked version. I've tweeted HTC, Sprint and Jason from HTC asking for confirmation on CCA compliance. We'll see if they respond.

While they say that the display may be a slight downgrade from the M8's screen, it is far from being an "issue". It's still one of the best displays out there, still looks great, and still got a 10/10 rating on the Verge review.

It's not like it's one review or one outlet giving the display a bad rating...so it's kind of hard to just downplay it. This is from Anandtech:

“Although we’re still missing some of the pieces, based upon what data we have the One M9 is in an alarming place for a new smartphone. It’s pretty rare that a new phone ends up regressing in almost every major way compared to an old phone, but the One M9 ends up doing this in display and battery life.

Again, I know they have said it is a regression from the M8. What I'm saying is that the display is still great and near the top in the smartphone realm despite the fact that it went backwards and is far from being a bad display. The display itself is getting a "bad rating" because the display is a step backwards from the M8, not because the display itself is bad.

It's akin to many people thinking the M9's design is bland because it's so similar to the M8, but that does not change the fact that it is still one the best designed phones around. They just speak about it negatively because they didn't change it as much as people hoped.

I'm sure the M9 is still a fantastic device and everything comes down to your perception of what people are saying about it.

No, it's not really just because people are saying it regressed from the m8.

Reviews are stating that it's not that color accurate and that colors (especially black) are "washed out".

I am on the exact same boat. I want to see how the SoC and Camera situation pans out over a couple more software updates.

There's an article on the wall that basically says, yes. It is CCA compliant.

That is not how I read that article. There were some definite concerns about one band as I recall.

This is what I do.  I find it to be more reliable that Sprint's voice network.

Two main downsides of google voice:

no call waiting

no 3-way calling

Overall, it has been a great solution for me.  I couldn't be happier.

Same here, the Samsung S6 just outguns the M9 in all aspects that really matter to me (camera, display, batterlife).  Stuff like loop pay seems like icing on the cake.

I prefer a stock nexus experience but the S6 will do just fine.  I'll be preordering the S6 tomorrow.

    • Since this is kind of the general chat thread, I have to share this humorous story (at least it is to me): Since around February/March of this year, my S22U has been an absolute pain to charge. USB-C cables would immediately fall out and it progressively got worse and worse until it often took me a number of minutes to get the angle of the cable juuuussst right to get charging to occur at all (not exaggerating). The connection was so weak that even walking heavily could cause the cable to disconnect. I tried cleaning out the port with a stable, a paperclip, etc. Some dust/lint/dirt came out but the connection didn't improve one bit. Needless to say, this was a MONSTER headache and had me hating this phone. I just didn't have the finances right now for a replacement.  Which brings us to the night before last. I am angry as hell because I had spent five minutes trying to get this phone to charge and failed. I am looking in the port and I notice it doesn't look right. The walls look rough and, using a staple, the back and walls feel REALLY rough and very hard. I get some lint/dust out with the staple and it improves charging in the sense I can get it to charge but it doesn't remove any of the hard stuff. It's late and it's charging, so that's enough for now. I decide it's time to see if that hard stuff is part of the connector or not. More aggressive methods are needed! I work in a biochem lab and we have a lot of different sizes of disposable needles available. So, yesterday morning, while in the lab I grab a few different sizes of needles between 26AWG and 31 AWG. When I got home, I got to work and start probing the connector with the 26 AWG and 31 AWG needle. The stuff feels extremely hard, almost like it was part of the connector, but a bit does break off. Under examination of the bit, it's almost sandy with dust/lint embedded in it. It's not part of the connector but instead some sort of rock-hard crap! That's when I remember that I had done some rock hounding at the end of last year and in January. This involved lots of digging in very sandy/dusty soils; soils which bare more than a passing resemblance to the crap in the connector. We have our answer, this debris is basically compacted/cemented rock dust. Over time, moisture in the area combined with the compression from inserting the USB-C connector had turned it into cement. I start going nuts chiseling away at it with the 26 AWG needle. After about 5-10 minutes of constant chiseling and scraping with the 26AWG and 31AWG needles, I see the first signs of metal at the back of the connector. So it is metal around the outsides! Another 5 minutes of work and I have scraped away pretty much all of the crap in the connector. A few finishing passes with the 31AWG needle, a blast of compressed air, and it is time to see if this helped any. I plug my regular USB-C cable and holy crap it clicks into place; it hasn't done that since February! I pick up the phone and the cable has actually latched! The connector works pretty much like it did over a year ago, it's almost like having a brand new phone!
    • That's odd, they are usually almost lock step with TMO. I forgot to mention this also includes the September Security Update.
    • 417.55 MB September security update just downloaded here for S24+ unlocked   Edit:  after Sept security update install, checked and found a 13MB GP System update as well.  Still showing August 1st there however.
    • T-Mobile is selling the rest of the 3.45GHz spectrum to Columbia Capital.
    • Still nothing for my AT&T and Visible phones.
