Why is wireless data so expensive in the USA?

So I just got back from a vacation in Iceland. In the capital city, Reykjavik, I stayed at a B&B where they provided WiFi via an LTE hotspot. I was thinking, that can't possibly be economical. I'm in a downtown apartment, there should be better options than this!

 

So I looked into it. Nope. ADSL is the best you can do, and it's only 6mbps. I was pulling 50mbps off this hotspot and they were charging pennies per MB compared to what US companies charge.

The exchange rate is 120 ISK to 1 USD. That means their 100GB LTE plan costs about $50 USD. For $50 on Sprint, I only get 6GB, and a prepaid 3GB plan costs $60 on Verizon!

 

Now I'm thinking, what the hell?! Why is LTE service so much cheaper in Iceland?

Iceland is a country of 600,000 or so If I remember correctly. The amount of spectrum per person is a lot more in Iceland than the US further since Iceland is such a small market they need to be in different markets beside smart phone and tabs to recover the fix cost.

I was in Iceland this month also, an amazing place, stunning!!

 

I was in the middle of nowhere, on one of those 4wd only roads in the southern part of the island, mountains all around, no buildings or towers to be seen, yet ..... full HSPA+ signal on Siminn.

300k people live there.

 

I stayed in a farm house b&b, miles from anywhere, and of course, great internet connection. They use some kind or wireless, I could see a lot of directional antennas on the buildings there. Low ping times, good service.

 

Loved it there, spendy. Quality of life is high for the people that live there.

I was made in Iceland. Really. My Dad was stationed at Keflavik in 1975. I was almost born there too. But my Mom made a Winter escape and landed in Grand Rapids, Michigan in time for my birth.

You must be the reason why Iceland went bankrupt, too. It can be mighty pricey to import enough fried chicken to satisfy your hunger even back then.

That's quite a coincidence. We might have crossed each other in Landmannalaugar or Þórsmörk then when I was doing the same thing. I had the same experience with Vodafone.is. HSPA+ everywhere, including the highlands. SIM card only cost 1000kr and came with 1000kr worth of minutes which made the card free.

 

The NOVA LTE service only worked in the capital but when it worked, it was awesome. At first I felt bad that I used 3GB of their bandwidth backing up my pictures. After I looked up how much it cost, I didn't feel so bad. Makes me a little jealous that it's so cheap and fast.

 

I did see a bunch of spools of fiber at the harbor with Ericsson logos on the spools. It looks like Siminn is getting ready for a big LTE deployment too.

I guess I don't have a choice. Because of you I had a great wireless experience during my vacation :lol: . I wish I could say the same during my road trip through Baja Mexico.

      Uploaded data without issues on Friday. Now with the latest update I am getting "Cluster #1 skipped: invalid file format detected. File exported for inspection." Doing same with all other clusters. Did this on 4 phones in a row.  Seems to work on s24 ultra just fine. On s21 ultra it says "web data upload failed. No data to send" although 8800 records were displayed. Now gives same error as above. I have not sent the data from 3 other phones.  All should have latest update.

      After several months of testing, an update to SignalCheck Pro is rolling out on Google Play. It may take up to 48 hours to become available for download. Notable changes include: Added option to display site notes for NSA 5G-NR cells. Enabling this new option (Preferences > Display Settings > Show NSA 5G-NR Site Notes) will cause the app to make an "educated guess" as to what the most appropriate site note is linked to the connected NSA 5G cell, using the PCI and the device location. If it finds an existing entry that is likely to be relevant, it will display the note along with the distance from where the strongest signal from that cell was logged. While connected to NSA 5G, these notes cannot be edited; a valid NCI is required to add/edit notes and that information is not available on NSA connections.   Added option to log cells with missing/invalid PLMN (such as NSA 5G-NR cells). Users asked for the ability to log data for NSA 5G, so a new option (Preferences > Logger Settings > Log Cells with Missing PLMN) will permit this.   Added option to display LTE info above 5G-NR info. Enabling this new option (Preferences > Display Settings > Show LTE Cells Above 5G-NR Cells) shows the same information that is currently displayed, but moves the LTE information above the 5G-NR information. Other changes: Code optimizations and enhancements. Improved Android 15 compatibility. Overhauled Purchases module. Resolved force closes impacting some GSM/LTE connections.       Stopped by again today and the antennas are up but it isn't live just yet. If other Sprint conversions are anything to go by it'll likely take about a month for the site to go live.

      It is an Android bug that was reportedly fixed in August 2023 but definitely has not been. I have implemented numerous workarounds in SCP to correct the NR bands the app displays. The OS ignores the possibility that many NR-ARFCNs are valid across multiple bands.. it reports the lowest NR band that is valid for the current ARFCN. In your example, channel 432530 can be n1, n65, or n66.. so the OS just (lazily) reports n1.   Awesome, thanks! I will add an n65 override also.
