Man I would love to be a GS3 owner now. I can't believe HTC got blown out by Samsung. I think I know what brand my next phone will be... ;)

Sooooo.....how to root?

How to root:

-1st, put Team Epics root from recovery zip onto your SD

-Flash CWM Recovery, or TWRP, through Odin (Desktop version), but before you do:

-Uncheck Auto reboot option before flashing

-After recovery flashes, un hook phone from desktop and pull battery

-Put battery back in and enter recovery mode before turning on phone (Volume Up+Home+Power buttons @ same time)

-Flash Team Epics Root from Recovery zip

-Reboot into System

You can find all these files here in the Sprint SGS3 Development section, I believe in you

Yeah same here. Yesterday I took a trip to a 4G area and unless I toggled airplane mode my S3 wouldnt connect to 4G...

Affirmative. I have a GS3, live in a developing LTE city, and have been doing a lot of testing. Sometimes, but certainly not always, it does take a toggle to force an LTE connection or reconnection. Once the connection is in place, the device does hold it well -- down to -115 dBm RSRP or maybe even weaker.

The consensus among those who have tested both the GS3 and the EVO 4G LTE clearly seems to favor the GS3's LTE performance. But the Samsung still needs help. L710VPLJ7 will include the third tweak of the firmware affecting LTE connections somehow. Hoping they get it all the way right this time.

XDA now has the LJ7 update and firmware available for download. The main OS (760MB) is taking awhile to download so I'll probably build a torrent of it and link to the torrent here for anyone else who wants to download it (will be seeding the torrent from two decently bandwidth-rich places).

@iansltx:

Is this the original LJ7 update one would get OTA if one waited?

Also, could you post a link to the xda thread so I can download it regularly since im at university and im pretty sure the ports are blocked for torrents.

Is this the leaked ROM, or is it the update.zip file format bit-for-bit that is distributed OTA and can be flashed directly by the handset's recovery update function? The latter is what I want.

This is also what I want. I just didnt know how to word it like bubba.

The update.zip that is signed and hence can be flashed through the stock recovery.

There are a couple options. You can get the large update, or the bunch of small, incremental ones. Can't say for certain whether you can flash them on a completely stock device, but I think the answer is Yes:

That's the leaked ROM.

I run stock, with stock updates, and I'll wait for the OTA update.zip file. Typically that is also available for download somewhere fairly soon after the rollout begins. But I don't see it yet.

hmm yeah thats the leak...

I guess I will wait for the official OTA.

I remember with my GS2 when the OTA for ICS was available, as people began getting the notification to update, somehow they extracted the URL of the update that the phone was downloading it from and they posted this on xda and so people could download the update manually before their phone actually got notified of it.
