  1. I think that Clearwire should take that offer to sell the leases. It is probably Dish who realized that they would not get BRS since Sprint has rights of first refusal.
  2. From the Bloomberg article: "Deutsche Telekom might consider Dish’s proposal when the transaction with MetroPCS closes, though only after verifying that a separate deal with Sprint Nextel Corp. (S) isn’t feasible, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private." The bolded part seems to me to imply that they have an active Sprint offer.
  3. Just remember that according to Bloomberg, T-Mobile already has a merger offer from Sprint.
  4. Dish Network Corp. (DISH) Chairman Charlie Ergen informally approached Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) about a possible merger with the German company’s T-Mobile USA Inc. unit, a deal that would let him bundle wireless service with his satellite-TV offerings, according to people close to the situation. Dish made the proposal sometime before April 10, when Deutsche Telekom announced a sweetened bid for MetroPCS Communications Inc. (PCS), according to the people. That aside, a Dish/T-mobile combination will have plenty of spectrum.

  6. The reason we are advocating a Sprint/Tmobile merger is that we think that the only way to compete with the Big 2 is to be just as big. Now, It would have been very nice to have had 4 companies of approximately equal size and approximately equal spectrum allocations but we don't. Short of that we think it's the best thing that could happen. The combined company would have the financial heft to bid in the upcoming sub 700MHz auction.
  7. Yes, of course the single 1x 800Mhz channel.
  8. Meanwhile there is speculation that Dish has amassed a $10B war chest. The speculation is that he goes after T-Mobile or sweetens the offer for Clearwire.
  9. I am sure that T-Mobile denizens would not like your characterization of them as a sub-prime brand. I'm pretty sure that a single channel of 1x would not be enough to accommodate both Sprint and T-Mobile subscribers. Maybe the capacity/coverage tradeoffs of 1x Advanced would help in this instance (lower rate codec, for example).
  10. Well, if the two merge, then only the Sprint customers will get the benefit of voice on 800MHz SMR, absent a fractional UMTS. With a fractional UMTS both Sprint and T-Mobile customers can get the benefit of voice on SMR. Of course, that would mean that spectrum for LTE on SMR will shrink by a commensurate amount. Of course the other solution would be to just put 1x + UMTS on SMR and no LTE. You might still need fractional UMTS in Solinc areas.
  11. Yeah me too. Now if I was engaged in field work, I would want something like that, but short of that, the iphone 4S is the ideal size.
  12. Yes because otherwise T-Mobile voice customers would not benefit from lower frequency spectrum.
  13. I know for a fact that there are multiple Sprint/Softbank teams looking at the T-Mobile merger from all angles. Does that means it happens? No, but they are doing their due diligence and are quite serious about it. That's why selling Clearwire's network to Dish as a condition of a Sprint/Tmobile merger makes total sense. It creates a 4th competitor for the FCC and DOJ to point to. A combined Sprint/Tmobile entity will have plenty of spectrum in the PCS and AWS bands and does not need EBS/BRS spectrum. I hope the FCC/DOJ force the combined entity to offer service in rural areas as a condition of the merger.
  14. I thought they should have acquired/merged with them a long time ago along with alltel. Sprint would have reduced their roaming bill and gained coverage credibility instantly.
  15. Yes, just remember what it came with. It came with a lot of debt. Alltel had very little debt. I also wanted them to acquire USCC and a few other regionals. Sprint could have also acquired some of the Nextwave spectrum that Metro acquired. It took Sprint, what, 8 years to reband? Meanwhile they replaced Nextel postpaid customers with prepaid customers. I think that Alltel/USCC customers would have stayed with Sprint and I think they would have added some postpaid customers. PCS G block is it's own band. Nobody else uses it. Sprint already had quite a lot of BRS spectrum of its own.
  16. You mean the same 4 bands that Verizon has to deal with? OK, no AWS, but definitely load up on PCS.
  17. It would be sufficient if they actually put up sites utilizing it. So far, that is not happening.
  18. I would have loved it if Sprint had acquired both Alltel and USCC and a few other regionals. Then bid both in the AWS and 700MHz auctions. BTW, AT&T has been busy lately acquiring the spectrum of Corr Wireless: AT&T said would benefit Corr subscribers by giving them access to AT&T's nationwide, high-speed wireless network. The deal also involves 10 to 52 MHz of spectrum covering parts of Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. Specifically AT&T would acquire: 25 MHz of cellular B Block spectrum in three counties, 10 to 15 MHz of PCS spectrum in 25 counties, and 12 MHz of Lower 700 MHz C Block spectrum in 58 counties They also get 21,000 subscribers. 19. Metro basically are on every site that Verizon is, whereas Sprint skipped quite a few.
  20. The Clearwire board has a fiduciary duty to examine any offer, whether for financing or merger or acquisition. I am sure that they realize that they cannot survive on their own without Sprint. I'm sure they want to stay independent, but the writing is on the wall. It was a totally disfunctional arrangement that created them in the first place and it is time to end it.
  21. If Metro runs the network, it will have very good coverage for the areas they cover. They are right up there with Verizon in Florida as far as their PCS coverage is concerned.
  22. And yet we keep educating and then hiring ethnic Chinese to work in some critical infrastructure industries with absolutely no consideration give to either security or IP theft concerns. We deserve what we get because we're freaking naive.
  23. Who is going to buy that spectrum from Dish. Dish wanted a partner but did not want to put money upfront and instead wanted to pay with capacity. Well, neither Sprint nor T-Mobile, after the merger, want to create a potential competitor. AT&T may have wanted to buy it, but they seem to be picking up plenty of 700MHz spectrum from Verizon and with their WCS purchases seem to be doing OK. They might or might not be interested. Sprint might have been interested before but only if Dish put up some money up front. As I have said many times, I'm all for Sprint taking their 55MHz of BRS out of Clearwire and selling the rest to Dish. Then merge with T-Mobile, thereby creating a very viable competitor to the Big Two. At some point they do need to get some sub 1GHz spectrum, but that's just around the corner.
  24. Clearwire Corp plans to notify Sprint Nextel Corp on Thursday that it will tap another $80 million of financing in April as part of its deal with the No. 3 U.S. wireless carrier, Reuters reported Thursday, citing two people close to the matter. In December, Sprint offered $2.97 per share to buy the rest of Clearwire that it doesn't own, and provided the wireless broadband operator up to $800 million in financing that it could draw on in installments of $80 million over 10 months.
