  1. On top of that, don't be surprised if the combination does not start expanding globably. Masha Son stated his ambitions to become a global force.
  2. More PCS and AWS spectrum, more customers, scale, more revenue. They do need to bid for 600Mhz spectrum and or help rural carriers develop their Lower 700Mhz spectrum.
  3. Robert, I fully agree with you. If Sprint lets Dish have Clearwire's network and EBS leases, thereby enabling a 4th network, the FCC will look very favorably at a Sprint/T-Mobile merger.
  4. Actually, I don't think that any of the big four really needs any spectrum right away. If as I predict, Sprint and T-Mobile merge, then the resulting entity would be flush with spectrum and would probably have to divest some. I have advocated that Sprint just keep the BRS spectrum and sell the Clearwire network and EBS leases to Dish and or just leases to Verizon.
  5. The priorities are set by the PRL's. It has nothing to do with the phone you are using. Update to the latest and greatest PRL.
  6. At this point in time, the best that Dish can do is to: 1. Bite the bullet and wait for the Softbank/Sprint merger to complete and then try to buy the Clearwire network + some EBS leases from Sprint. I hope they elect this route. 2. Try to merge (not acquire T-Mobile) 3. Just get it's spectrum hosted by either Sprint or T-Mobile. 4. Sell its spectrum to AT&T
  7. Finally, the millstone around Sprint's neck can be thrown away. I hope that Sprint takes the opportunity to really solidify their coverage and at the same time reduce their roaming bill. Right after the Softbank deal closes, they need to go back to being Sprint. No more Nextel anywhere. Close the book on this dark chapter in Sprint history.
  8. I wonder what they are going to do with all that spectrum in all the suburban/exurban areas. I hope they don't just waste it. They could use for fixed broadband service or they could sell it to somebody, like Dish or DirectTV. Or even, let's say, Verizon.
  9. They can easily do a 10x10 operation if they bid and win the PCS H block. The only way they can make the Dish spectrum usable for a 20x20 operation is to apply to the FCC to reverse the uplink and downlink. That way the uplinks will be contiguous and the the downlinks can be aggregated together in a Carrier aggreagation scheme. BTW, the possibility of Sprint and Dish getting together has been bandied around for a year now. I have long been an advocate of a cooperative arrangement between Dish and Sprint (a hosting of the Dish Spectrum), of Sprint selling them Dish the EBS spectrum and then hosting it for them or an outright merger (not a takeover). But Ergen is an egomaniac and wants to run things. The problem with his bid is that it will saddle the resulting entity with $45B of debt. And that $13B of synergies in his bid is a lot of hot air. That figure is pulled out of his arse.
  10. I know I will sound like a broken record, but I want the Softbank/Clearwire merger to close, the EBS spectrum and Clearwire network sold to Dish and Spirnt/Softbank to merge with TMobile/Metro. I'm not asking for much am I?
  11. Same here. Verizon and MetroPCS have done it right in their PCS deployment in Florida. Even AT&T added 600 sites in Florida last year and that was one of their better covered areas.
  12. That's mandated by LTE-Advanced and not by Carrier Aggregation.
  13. They removed Google-based Maps and replaced with their TomTom based maps. On the other hand you can download Google Maps independently.
  14. There is a 5MHz guard band between PCS H and AWS-4. A big spat between Sprint and Dish at the FCC about that.
  15. I thought that DC-HSPA+ and LTE CA devotes the same percentage of subcarriers to guard bands no matter whether you have 2 channels by themselves or two bonded channels. So where are the efficiencies going to come from?
  16. While carrier aggregation is beneficial for peak speeds, it does nothing for capacity. Additionally, the complexity it introduces at the basestation software might not be worth it. I'm still to be convince that carrier aggregation is good for anything but running speedtests at 3:00AM on unloaded channels and bragging rights.
  17. From gigaom (with Tim Farrar as guest columnist) http://gigaom.com/2013/04/21/why-dish-should-be-negotiating-with-clearwire-rather-than-bidding-for-sprint/ .......... The greater flexibility DISH has in realizing its mobile video plans vs its fixed broadband ones suggests it may be far more important for it to acquire some of Clearwire’s spectrum than to buy all of Sprint right now. After all, if Deutsche Telekom is willing to strike a deal with DISH after completing its merger with MetroPCS, then Ergen could deploy the 2.5GHz Clearwire spectrum on T-Mobile’s network. So the question is, might SoftBank agree to sell part of Clearwire’s spectrum to DISH, in exchange for DISH agreeing to withdraw its bid for Sprint? That would certainly be logical, but with two billionaires’ egos at stake, it’s never a given that the most rational outcome will prevail.
  18. Dan needs to ask whether he can get his bald spot in matte.
  19. Nowhere near, because you have LTE which is the common data technology element and VOLTE which is the unifying voice framework. They don't have to reband, they don't have to buy any subsidiaries and they don't a clash of cultures.
  20. Ergen wants to be running the show and that won't happen anytime soon. I have said it and I will say it now, I want him to have Clearwire under the proviso that Sprint and T-Mobile are allowed to merge. A combined Sprint/T-Mobile/Metro will have 96M customers and plenty of spectrum, even without BRS spectrum. Their spectrum needs would be in the 600Mhz band.
  21. I am of the strong opinion that Sprint should sell Clearwire to Dish minus the BRS spectrum then go after T-Mobile.
