  1. I am coming to the conclusion that the HTC One m9 is not so hot for signal chasing.  I made a 200 mile loop in Nebraska.**  After I left Sprint LTE service, I was in what we know as 1x800 (3g) or pockets of no Sprint service.  On the return leg, I was almost back in Fremont, Nebraska still experiencing 1x800 (3G) when I should have picked up LTE well by then according to Sensorly maps.

It was not until I was back in north Fremont that I pulled over and double checked my settings, etc.

Even after stopping Sensorly, LTE Discovery and Signal Check Pro, my HTC One m9 was using the Nickerson tower at 1x800 (3g).

In other words, even with the built in Sprint Connection Optimizer, it failed to pick up LTE when I returned to LTE territory. Even after stopping the three apps and doing the manual Airplane switch, my HTC One m9 switched to LTE band 25 at Sapp Bros in North Fremont, NE.  After I went on the US Hwy 275 bypass, the HTC One m9 reverted to 1x800 (3G) over half way back to Omaha.

Going over the same ground on the way up from Omaha, I was getting Sprint LTE service in various bands - mostly band 25 and some band 26.

** Fremont, NE to Columbus, NE up to Norfolk, NE and return via US Hwy 275.

My LG G Pad was no better.

I'm not saying I told you it was.... well, wait, I did.  :D   I wouldn't bother man, it's way to sketchy at it's current state to trust what you're seeing.

*Hit me up via PM about your Gpad, I may have a consolation gift for your efforts, while futile and fruitless for the most part, your effort is commendable! Thanks

  2. I am having a heck of a time with this phone, not in establishing a connection to a tower but actually having data throughput once I make the connection. This issue has generated quite the discussion thread on the Sprint users forum but I haven't seen any mention of it here.

This always occurs when switching towers. It is never an issue when I am stable on a tower. It happens for example when leaving wifi at my house and also when switching from tower to tower while driving. From what I can tell it is not specific to a specific LTE frequency as I have seen it occur on 2500 and 800. It is not even specific to LTE because it happens on 3G as well.

Here is a screenshot and as you can see I have the white triangle that tells me I have no data connection and that warning is real because I indeed do not. The only thing that fixes this is to toggle airplane mode when it occurs or if you wait it out eventually after many minutes it usually goes away on its own.

It's very safe to say, any connectivity issues are related to the "Apps over LTE" *bug that will be fixed with the MR they are working. The issues is surely deeper than just certain apps not working over LTE but we may never know just what the problem is.

I have a hunch that it's both device radio and network related conflicts that have us seeing the strange behavior from our M9's. I can say that I do see that no data transmission that you talked about, you aren't alone my friend. :)

  3. I had an issue with mine from the play store at the beginning but it just took my msl code. I remember sprint having an issue activating T-Mobile origin devices.

If I recall correctly the only n5's that there were issued activating were those sold by T-Mobile.

I'm looking to buy an unlocked Sprint device to both allow me to learn a bit about Android development and to use AT&T and T-Mobile.

My main concern is whether Sprint will activate it. Will Sprint activate the device regardless of where it was purchased or do I need to make sure of the origin of the device before purchasing?

As those 2 said, only T-mob origin devices had issues (that may or may not have been able to get around) but the Play Store devices are good to go.  I have Play device and it was not a problem activating at all.  I believe the sku for Play vs Tmob devices are different so you might be able to tell from that.

Sprint worldwide support (via chat) claims the M9 is a worldwide phone and is absolutely able to roam in Canada for both voice and data. Any ideas how they can make this claim if your findings say otherwise??

CSR's still ask you to pull the battery on a device line that hasn't had a removable battery for 5yr...  ;)

  5. As soon as I typed all that I realized I hadn't checked memory usage and cleared out a sizeable bit of cached data. I will see if that improves things.

Did you hard reset after the update? If not, try that as its advisable to do so if possible.

  6. They should show the same band if you have the latest version of each. Would need screen shots taken at the same moment to figure out what's going on.

Ha! I guess I should test this tomorrow... :)

  7. Eric,

In my first 24 hours I think that signal/LTE performance remains unchanged, which is pretty good compared to many devices. Battery life I think may be slightly improved, again, pretty good compared to many devices. Overall, the phone performs quite well with Lollipop. It seems they did a great job on the software side. It's hard to believe that a phone this old is still this good and relevant. If only all my devices could be this way. This is by far the longest I've held on to a single handset and, to this day, I don't see any major reasons to upgrade.

Got to hear man and I'll agree, the G2 is a great device AND I held on to it the longest of any in the last 5yr. I moved on to the M9 full time for much better dev support (starting with OEM support) sound and GPS! I had one of the really bad no GPS G2's, even sent back to LG which was a waste, but free.

I'm still using my G2 as a secondary, I just can bring myself to get rid of it. I'll be updating the wife's G2 in the coming days.

    Thanks for the update.

  8. I always just use the double-tap to wake the phone.  For turning off, I've really come to like Gravity sensor app.

    Welcome to the M9 club!

The "Turn off screen" nav button is handy! It makes up for not having a "proper" tap on/tap off functionality on the screen because you can that button from ANY screen. :)

  9. Maybe you got a dud, mine holds onto LTE as good as my n5 with the 1.15 radio that over inflated db readings. I pick up b41 in places now at ~ -95db strength where I couldn't get it on LTE without it being forced, same goes for the other bands. I haven't seen 3g since I picked up my m9, and I used to have to toggle it 15-20 times a day with my n5.

These observations are from the KC area, will be taking a trip back to STL (for life in color) next weekend so I'll update how it fairs there, my home is notorious for shitty signal for all the carriers.

I'm seeing the same here and I have N5 as well and a G2 (it was pretty solid but no N5) and comparing, the M9 is definitely doing a better job not only latching on, but staying with the usable band.

  10. Mines supposed to be here Thursday. Trying to decide if I need an SD card, and how big...

I'd say 32gig as they aren't that expensive, pictures are 3-5mb AND if you are "root" kinda guy, a stock nandroid is 8gb (system is 4.3gb alone).

    Any news M9 shipping already?

They've been shipping since the 2nd or 3rd, just gotta order online and it'll magically appear, rather quickly. :)

  11. Well I'm joining this club in a few days. Anyone have a case and/or a tempered glass screen protector they'd recommend?

Spigen's Thin Fit case is great for minimal coverage while showing of the sexy lines and build of this device.  Standard TPU is good for full coverage.  I have pics of the Thin Fit on my brothers Silver/Gold that I sent to him, no pics of TPU on a phone yet BUT I could probably take pics of both Thin Fit and Black TPU tomorrow. No screen pro here, never needed but if I did, I'd give Supershieldz a try based on muffinman and others recommendation OR the Zagg tempered series.

  12. Joking aside, I do think this a bit of a gaffe on the part of HTC -- both to call this handset "M9" and to offer it in a "gunmetal" finish.  HTC should have skipped one or the other this generation.

    AJ

Well... save that for the 2022 model, I have one of those as well.  :2tu:

  13. I set up my M9 for conceal and carry.

    AJ

Ha ha! I prefer my PM9 for EDC.  :tu:

*Anxiously await some RF performance data as I'll have a M9 in the near future as well.

  14. But does team d3rp have any plans on getting us a L ROM?

Sadly.... no.  LG's support of the dev community has driven us back to a much much more accepting mfg that many of us have never walked away from, but have two timed with LG because we really did love the G2 platform.  There is no reason we (as G2 users) should be forced to use a radio/firmware combo that is 3 updates behind because of their locking policies and software dependencies.

I will say this though, the G2 is still my most favorite Android device, I held on to it the longest out of any device, all the way back to 2004.  If it weren't for the complete lack of GPS, even after sending to LG for repair, I'd probably keep my G2 or at least not be worried about keeping it and giving to a family member.  LG did a great job with the device but with no support for the Dev community, it is time to move on to greener pastures. We'll be rolling pretty with the new device though so pretty excited about getting back to what we love.  :)

  15. See this excerpt about one of the top features of Android 5.1. There are few things you are misunderstanding about Android 5.1 HD voice and Sprint's HD voice. What Android 5.1 is proposing is that calls between any Android users with devices using Android 5.1 is that their calls will be HD voice and they specifically call out Verizon and Tmobile getting upgrades being able to take advantage of this. Sprint's HD voice is limited to only calls between Sprint customers with HD voice capable devices. That is a huge difference in that the former applies to a larger pool of Android users while the latter applies to only Sprint customers. This has nothing to do with Sprint stripping out the HD voice capability BETWEEN Sprint customers...of course that will remain.

My point was why doesn't the article list Sprint as being able to take advantage of Android 5.1's HD voice support especially when its cell towers are able to support HD voice?

    http://www.androidcentral.com/whats-new-android-51-some-big-and-small-changes-updated-lollipop-release#slide3

Maybe it's because those other providers "hardware" as it applies to the towers/base stations don't actually enable HD voice where as our Sprint NV hardware enables any Sprint users with HD voice hand sets connecting to NV base stations to take advantage.  I'd think they STILL should point out that Android 5.1 to 5.1 calls will be HD voice on our network and what sounds like inter-carrier calls as well.

The HD voice call out for T-Mobile and Verizon is VoLTE using whatever the HD codec is, I can't remember off the top of my head. It doesn't call out Sprint because they don't support VoLTE yet.

    Or this... :-D

  16. Guys, I'd recommend using a GOOD (not like what we see on the device) battery stats tracking app like GSam Battery Monitor to see what, exactly, is going on and what is eating your battery. It it doesn't require root and will also show trending data so you can get a feel for how it's been over a period of time. Here is a screen shot I took today to give you an idea, it's CM12 on my G2 but you get the idea.
