  1. Thus, many HTC One M9 users will be running numerous speed tests to try to confirm CA. Am I connected to CA now? What about now? How about here? Or over here? And my soul dies a little bit more every day… AJ
  2. Some people like it or just follow the crowd -- because it is a well known brand and a bit upscale. But many others dislike it, finding it overwhelmingly strong, cold, and bitter. AJ
  3. My girlfriend is on a VZW family account. Mike needs to get band identification working on VZW. Then, maybe he gets a smooch. AJ
  4. I got my girlfriend switched from an old iPhone to a more recent Android handset, and I got her to purchase SignalCheck Pro. How much is my kickback? AJ
  5. It is a firmware issue -- and both Motorola and T-Mobile are partly responsible. On low end handsets, Motorola may not be willing to create custom E911 scanning/fallback firmware for T-Mobile, which is kind of an odd duck in that it has some low band packet switched data spectrum nationally but no low band circuit switched voice spectrum (except in Myrtle Beach). T-Mobile is also rather stingy with roaming agreements. Lots of "No Service -- Emergency Calls Only." And therein lies the rub. Where only band 12 fills those gaps, T-Mobile handsets are programmed to cling to that native signal, which does not support first party voice for non VoLTE handsets. AJ
  6. No, in today's Millennial society, TL;DR. But a hot take is a moral good. AJ
  7. This is what T-Mobile gets for possessing minimal low band spectrum but putting its eggs in the VoLTE basket so soon. Still, I can understand why T-Mobile has made the move to disable band 12 on non VoLTE handsets. The legal liability for T-Mobile could be significant if a non VoLTE handset were stuck on T-Mobile band 12 -- because that is native service, the highest priority -- but unable to make an E911 call. Better to avoid potential civil lawsuits, just leave those non VoLTE handsets with roaming or no service. As long as AT&T or some other GSM type provider signal is available, an E911 call will be connected, even on a handset that indicates no service due to T-Mobile prohibiting roaming in that LAC. For further discussion, read the comment I left on the FierceWireless article this afternoon: And, hey, even Fabian up voted my explanation -- though he declared it was "lengthy." AJ
  8. Italian bread. Onion rings. Three wishbones. Spaghetti. German potato salad. German cole slaw. Diet Coke. AJ
  9. The 2015 Moto X Style/Pure Edition display is LCD. AJ
  10. Hey, a Cubs-Royals World Series. Possibly, it could happen. But maybe on the south side, you are a White Sox fan. Yeah, that is not going to happen this year... AJ
  11. Stroud's fried chicken is really good. After several years, I had it again last fall, and it is really good. The Brookville Hotel in central/western Kansas along I-70 -- I have another story on that one -- is another fried chicken destination. But if you are are totally serious about fried chicken, you have to go another two hours south of Kansas City to Crawford County, KS. Chicken Annie's and Chicken Mary's. I grew up 30 miles north of both. Trust me, Robert -- the fried chicken judge of the world -- will back me up on this assessment. AJ
  12. A few disclaimers... In Kansas City, BBQ sauce matters. The sauce is not an excuse -- it is a delicious, integral part of the experience. Joe's Kansas City was formerly the well known, new kid on the block Oklahoma Joe's -- not much to do with Oklahoma, mostly to do with the nickname of the smoker. The holy trinity of Kansas City BBQ in chronological order is Arthur Bryant's, Gates, and Joe's Kansas City. My apologies to Jack Stack, LC's, and many others. But they do not make the cut. Meat: Joe's Kansas City > Arthur Bryant's > Gates gusherb is right. The meat quality at Joe's Kansas City is unmatched -- smoked yet juicy. However, the sauce is not the best -- too Worcestershire based. And because of magazine/television attention, Joe's Kansas City is more or less BBQ for suburban white people. If you are a white guy, you may feel more comfortable there, but you are not getting real Kansas City BBQ indoctrination. Sauce: Gates > Arthur Bryant's > Joe's Kansas City Gates classic sauce is my go to BBQ sauce, hands down. More sharp and spicy than sweet, it complements ribs, brisket, burnt ends, chicken, and sausage all equally well. On that last note, Gates has the best burnt ends and all beef sausage in town. Do not sleep on the sausage. The smoked chicken wings at select locations are also pretty special -- to which Robert will attest. As an aside -- or a side -- Arthur Bryant's has hand cut fries that are the best in town, yet Gates has prepackaged steak fries that somehow go so well with its entrees and sauce. At Gates, ask for them to be "extra crispy" -- many people do. In the end, if you pass through Kansas City and want to do BBQ, I recommend the original Arthur Bryant's near downtown or any of the Gates locations. They are practically the father and son of Kansas City BBQ. At the original Arthur Bryant's, which is in a now desolate urban neighborhood, you may rub elbows with campaigning politicians, conventioneers, and Japanese tourists. At any Gates location, if you are white, you may be the only white person in line. And you will have "Hi, may I help you?" yelled at you several times. Personally, as a white, suburban academic, I enjoy being a minority in that situation -- and I know how to place my order. If you do not know the ordering protocol, you will feel awkward. Still, you will be experiencing Kansas City BBQ as the locals do. Last year when Robert was in Kansas City, we did a cornucopia of entrees at Gates. Next time Robert comes to Kansas City, we are doing the original Arthur Bryant's. That is if the allure of Stroud's pan fried chicken is not too strong. AJ
  13. I love that this thread has typically devolved into a tangential subject. But it has relevance. How many of you have shared Kansas City BBQ with Robert? I am pretty sure the answer is one. I will have further thoughts once I get out of the car. AJ
  14. It sounds like at least one of you works in post production, so you will know what I am talking about. The greatest benefit from the paradigm shift to 4K or UHD probably will be the more careful source origination. To illustrate, look at the past nine years of BD. Sure, nearly every BD release has been superior to an earlier or simultaneous DVD release. However, many of these BD releases have been sourced from old DVD era scans that marginally possess 2K resolution. Early in the BD format, we did not know any better, the image looked high def, and we ate it up. Then, we got wiser. Today, we are seeing a great many 4K scan sourced BDs, and they look tremendous. Even though they have been down sampled to 1080p, they retain most/all of the resolution of the source. In other words, 4K capture has greater benefits than 4K display. On most 2160p displays, I am unconvinced that most UHD BD will visibly trump BD -- provided from the same 4K scan. But the 4K movement hopefully will end the practice of passing off old master scans on UHD BD or BD. AJ
  15. It is a 3FF micro SIM. Only the latest generation of Samsung Galaxy handsets switched to the 4FF nano SIM. AJ
  16. Well, I stand by my assessment. I highly doubt that Sprint will seek to standardize just a band 25 uplink + band 41 downlink. That would not really even be true CA -- it would be like an entirely new 3GPP band with the uplink and downlink separated by 700 MHz, somewhat akin to AWS-1/3 with its 400 MHz duplex offset. No, if Sprint goes down this path, I fully expect it will go with a PCC band 25 uplink/downlink + SCC band 41 downlink CA strategy. Both PCC band 26 uplink/downlink + SCC band 41 CA and PCC band 26 uplink/downlink + SCC band 25 downlink CA should be standardized at that time, too. The question in my mind, though, is whether Sprint will pursue the unconventional FDD + TDD CA -- or just use available BRS/EBS spectrum for 20 MHz supplemental downlink CA, no TDD in that combo. AJ
  17. But you could hear yo momma's moans and sighs with me in high fidelity over that VoLTE codec -- until the call dropped. AJ
  18. Since when in the new stadium have you gotten $8 seats? That place is practically the US Treasury. Did you score a sweetheart, "opposite" deal on tickets? AJ
  19. Now, should the wife be seamless or not. I am confused on that one. AJ
