  1. When you want to know about the RF capabilities of a certain handset, always check The Wall for an article. People are neglecting to do so, and our articles -- which used to attract 10,000+ readers -- are languishing, lately under 3000 readers. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/blog/1/entry-393-even-more-guardians-of-the-samsung-galaxy/ AJ
  2. I did not know that this discussion was about small cells and that discussion of Marcelo possibly moving the headquarters away from Overland Park was off topic in the Marcelo thread. AJ
  3. I guess I have been asleep at the wheel. Though I write many of the FCC OET RF articles, I have little interest in other aspects of Samsung smartphones -- because of TouchWiz. I recall many an AnandTech review that painted an unpretty picture on PenTile resolution, chromaticity, and gamma. I have a 2014 Moto X with an OLED display, which is fine for my purposes, though clearly inaccurate. But if those issues have been corrected, then I stand corrected. AJ
  4. Face the facts. Contracts and subsidies are not keeping up with reality. If you want "unlimited" data and a tricked out iPhone, you are going to pay more. Because "unlimited" data usage is growing, becoming more expensive to provide, and iPhones are overpriced. Alternatively, you can save money. You can choose a more sensible non contract, non subsidy tiered data plan. You can go with one of the many $200-400 direct sales handsets coming onto the market. And if you are still hellbent on an iPhone, you can buy used. Or you can hope that these moves put downward pressure on Apple's excessive iPhone profit margin. AJ
  5. To add one more counterpoint to the discussion, Omaha. It is a smaller, non major league, and less attractive city than Kansas City. Yet, Omaha has an impressive five longstanding Fortune 500 companies. They have not relocated to other cities. They are able to recruit employees. The idea that the Midwest is a non destination is false, and it seems to be floated by people with a coastal bias. AJ
  6. I still think you undervalue the development diversity of the Kansas City metro. One, if a young Sprint recruit wants an urban lifestyle, he or she can always live downtown and commute to Overland Park. Two, I hope that -- as an educated city planner -- you have read Joel Garreau's book "Edge City." Kansas City has multiple "edge cities," but those of interest for people seeking an urban lifestyle are Crown Center/Crossroads District and the Country Club Plaza. Marcelo lives in a treed, mansioned, "old money" neighborhood but five minutes from the Country Club Plaza. Three, honestly, the Sprint Campus/Leawood Town Center is an emerging "edge city." Right across the street from the Sprint Campus is a "New Urbanism" development filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and a hotel at walkable street level, then hundreds of apartments and lofts above. The AMC Theatres headquarters is there -- plus a 20 screen AMC movie theatre just down the block. Ericsson and ZTE have offices there. That young Sprint "hipster" recruit could live there and even walk or bike across Nall Ave to work. AJ
  7. Yeah, 50,000 micocells? That is abnormally high. I made the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs. AJ
  8. Hmm, I was under the impression that the "S" was for Samsung -- then Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. If Super instead because the digitizer is integrated, that makes sense. Good to know... AJ
  9. How so? SAMOLED basically is never an accurate display. AJ
  10. If the 2015 Nexus 5 is a $400 handset, you are practically wasting a subsidized upgrade on it. Only $600+ handsets make sense on subsidy. No, the Nexus 5 is a quintessential example of how/why non subsidy, non contract plans can make sense for consumers. AJ
  11. Brownback and the Koch brothers can get bent. But I am not sure that your conclusion about business climate holds true. Under his policies, AMC Theatres moved its HQ from downtown Kansas City, MO to Leawood, KS -- just across the street from the Sprint Campus. The Missouri side of the metro was royally pissed off. Regardless, the school systems are significantly better on the Kansas side. The Blue Valley School District, which includes nearly all of the area proximate to the Sprint Campus, is one of the absolute best school districts in the entire country. A recent ranking placed it at #23. The only Missouri school districts in the top 100 were ranked lower and in the St. Louis metro. So, while I agree that Lee's Summit, Blue Springs, Liberty, and Parkville on the Missouri side are nice places to live, Blue Valley schools are a driving factor why southern Overland Park is the most desirable growth area in the Kansas City metro. AJ
  12. Enjoy that long commute from across or up the river -- especially if it is on public transportation. Meanwhile, as I have told you, if you were to transfer to Overland Park, you could have a nice house in a cul de sac with lots of Indian neighbors only 2-3 miles tops from the Sprint Campus. AJ
  13. I know, and I apologize for that. But in the span of almost 15,000 posts, sometimes I have to speak my mind. AJ
  14. No, I have more to say. Millenials are the first social media generation, and because of that excessive self interest broadcast to the world, they bring a lot of the crap they receive on themselves. Reap what you sow. For anyone who is a Millenial and takes umbrage at that, go right ahead. I do not care. And that, now, will be my last statement on the topic. AJ
  15. Part of me is fine with the situation if T-Mobile always lacks in obtaining low band spectrum. If we are going to maintain four nationwide networks, we may need to have a "loser" network. That may be just the natural, competitive order of things. Magentans and tech press have been happy to paint or even revel in Sprint as the "loser" network. And I think many of you have been happy to take advantage of sweetheart deals and perks as Sprint has struggled. Personally, I would not mind if the script gets flipped -- as the RootMetrics national results seem to indicate -- and T-Mobile goes back to being the "loser" network. It may be a necessity in the domestic wireless environment that we have created. AJ
  16. Look, as an educated geographer, I am no advocate of urban sprawl. But are you telling me that Millenials like living side by side or on top of one another and using public transportation? They do not like having affordable houses with yards and being able to drive on non congested freeways to anywhere in a huge metro -- including those supposedly desirable dense urban districts -- within 30 minutes? I did not know these things. But if they are so, just more reasons why Millenials are the most annoying generation ever. AJ
  17. Because the HP TouchPad actual high power transformer can be separated from the USB cable, I know that I can continue to use it. But I do not want to have to use adaptors. That is the antithesis of convenience. Little adaptors on the nightstand. Little adaptors made of ticky tacky. AJ
  18. I suspect that jamesinclair has never been to Kansas City. Even if he has, he is ignorant about characteristics of the metro. Sprint is located in Johnson County, KS, which is the 81st wealthiest county in the country (per median household income). No county in Florida, by the way, makes the top 100. And where Marcelo lives in Mission Hills, KS, it is fully the 13th wealthiest community in the country (per capita income). The nonsense about not being able to attract talent to Kansas City is, well, nonsense. People come to work here, and they stay here because they like it. AJ
  19. Meh. I like my high powered USB 2.0 charger from my old HP TouchPad. It charges all of my devices well -- that is, until USB Type-C makes an inconvenient appearance. Some of you guys excited about the reversible plug seem to be lazy or klutzes. AJ
  20. You mean "Mobile without Borders." "Open World" is Sprint's similar offering. Either way, I await the Internet outrage when some people go to work overseas or study abroad for a year, and much to their surprise because they failed to read the terms, they get suspended or outright terminated for excessive international roaming. AJ
  21. What is the story behind the "the full Richard Yarrell" reference in the poll? From what I have seen in other comment sections, that guy is a known troll, maybe a T-Mobile troll. AJ
  22. Come on, now. That is a distortion. No one extended your contract. It was always a 24 month contract. Sprint previously allowed early subsidized upgrades at 20 months with contract renewal. It was basically a perk at Sprint's discretion. Sprint has since changed subsidized upgrade eligibility to 24 months to coincide with contract completion. Sheesh, too many of you are seemingly addicted to subsidized devices. You view upgrade eligibility as the length of your contract -- even though those two pieces are separate. Your contract is there to pay off the subsidy you received on your current subsidized device, not to pay forward on your next subsidized device. And when Sprint eventually pulls the plug mid contract on all future subsidized upgrade eligibility, many of you will act as if you have been cheated. But you will be wrong. Still, you will complain about it. AJ
  23. Yeah, it is a good thing that I write my articles on The Wall only during celestial events. AJ
  24. And that means I am exactly right. You know, on those rare occasions, I do know what I am talking about. AJ
