  1. Connection optimizer is actually very interesting. It used 3G to signal when to turn on my 4g radio in my EVO 3D. The downside is that I feel it is a little..... optimistic.. about where WiMax actually exists. Still, it doesn't bother me and I find myself using more WiMax bandwidth than I did before. It does make me use more battery than normal due to having the 4g radio on but that is fine as I am usually near a charger during the day.
  2. The victim here in Austin is probably Grande Communications which has built out it's own DOCSIS 3.0 network and competed against TWC and AT&T for over a decade. I have great internet speed (30/3 for around $35/mo) and all cable packages come with a full TIVO box and not some shitcan TWC DVR. They offer speeds up to 110 down to residential customers and have pretty great customer service. I hear TWC's response is that they plan to blanket public areas with superfast WIFI for TWC subscribers only.
  3. This is actually very true. Here in Austin the Verizon and AT&T (even T-Mobile) trucks that were parked around big event areas for SXSW really highlighted the weak Sprint network. I had literally no data during these events because Sprint didn't roll out additional coverage. In 2010 Sprint had one of the better network performances during events but this year they were dead last. This kind of thing is what really frustrates people who have Sprint service. I actually ended up having to connect to a friend's Verizon hotspot to get an email sent out.
  4. Less than that I believe. They already cut back on their initially announced LTE deployment. Once Sprint buys them I would imagine that Sprint would take some towers down that they feel overlap too much and consolidate towers.
  5. I'm all for AT&T advertising their blazing fast LTE network but this is going too far.
  6. I am not surprised. I ran an online game server for a while and we tried to auction off a launch day banner for an expansion we implemented and were stopped by ebay because they simply didn't understand we were selling naming rights to a digital item in exchange for a donation. Anyway, we ended up having people PM offers and then posting the amount (without a name) on the forums. It worked out okay but then you run the risk of people promising money and not delivering. Restricting it to members who are already Sponsors might be a good idea.
  7. Agreement to buy 9% more even if the transaction doesn't close AND if the transaction doesn't complete under certain circumstances the standstill provision for November 28th is waived and opens the doors for Sprint ahead of time.
  8. Good news! They can focus on their nonactionable offer for Clearwire all they want. It won't be agreed to without changes that will diminish the influence they can have over Sprint. Sprint does need Clearwire badly in order to succeed though as it has the least spectrum of the 4 carriers without Clearwire and the most with it.
  9. Haha oh wow. "exploit it's majority position.." also got a chuckle from me. What is the POINT of paying for a majority position if not for the extra privileges that go with it? Oh wait, Dish wants those privileges for a minority position that violates the Clearwire agreements, right.
  10. I'm not sure that Disney runs it's own network. They have been using Sprint branded phones for quite a while now. If I recall, they sold their frequencies for private networks years ago (during the "smart sourcing" changes they rolled out to the parks to save money) and Sprint/Nextel gave them a really good deal on two way radio service. I think they use IDEN for only security radios these days actually.
  11. Right. The EVO LTE had it my evo3d by virtue of having a separate WiMax antenna can do Wimax/talk at the same time. I just wondered if the new chipsets will support SVDO/SVLTE over separate bands. It would be a neat trick to have 800mhz voice +1900 LTE when calling.
  12. This may have been answered already but will triband phones be able to natively handle voice+data at the same time with the new 800 bands or will it be one or the other still? Can I be on LTE/CDMA and talk at the same time or is it chipset dependent?
  13. I won't be moving off of Wimax until forced to or until triband phones come out. LTE coverage in Austin remains spottier than even Wimax.
  14. Sort of surprising to me as my phone just now got the network optimizer that offloads my data use automatically onto Wimax in areas that have it.
  15. Nothing. Sprint can veto any agreement and simply wait clearwire out until it gets 68% ownership later this year. At that time they can change the bylaws and take over clearwire
  16. I think it mostly has to do with Dish needed more than 25% voting stock and the expiration of the waiting period under one of the many antitrust acts. On my phone so I can't look. Anyways, the Clearwire board can recommend offers until it is blue in the face and Sprint can veto anything, period. Maybe Sprint should consider pocketing the money (via Clearwire) provided they can get as many poison pills into the agreement as possible to prevent any possible takeover or gaining above 25% ownership. At least then maybe Clearwire would be able to fund some of it's network rollout.
  17. This is for Dish's offer on Clearwire I believe (not a WSJ sub) http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-06-12/clearwire-board-backs-dish-s-bid-over-sprint-s-competing-offer.html not for the Dish offer on Sprint itself.
  18. Sprint devices do indeed automatically update PRLs. I have seen the message for it once on my evo3d.
  19. So the new Softbank deal sucks. The new deal is $16.6 billion + $5 billion in cash=$21.6 billion for 78% stake. Compare that to the old deal which was $20.1 billion for a 70% stake. This offer is actually a significantly lower valuation of $27.75 billion now vs $28.88 billion before.
  20. you mean stuff like this image via http://www.siliconinvestor.com/readmsgs.aspx?subjectid=36035&msgnum=115586&batchsize=10&batchtype=Previous
  21. Not yet. Softbank has raised more $4 billion more in financing which points to possibly money that will go towards Sprint's bid for Clearwire.

  23. Yep. However, what we are talking about is data dumped to the NSA via secret order. FBI and Law enforcement agencies issue requests usually with judge approval for this information and usually for specific information. NSA comes by and says "uh, we will take everything you got on everybody oh and you can't tell anyone" For all we know, due to the secret nature of the order, Verizon could have been doing this on a continual 30 day period for a long time.
  24. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/06/07/social-media-verizon-nsa/2400623/ People are upset that Verizon is providing information over 30 day periods that ATT has already been providing for over a decade. Verizon tries to say "its just metadata!" which just means it can contain everything but the actual voice in the call... supposedly.
