There has been a lot of talk about the LTE phones that Sprint has and will be releasing this year, but not much about any Broadband cards for LTE.

 

I would assume they're coming but does anyone have any additional information about what's in the pipe? Will the first ones have 800MHz support or will that come later?

 

I know they're not as sexy as the new phones, but for some of us they're our only link to the outside world. :)

Sprint is committed on delivering a hotspot that will support LTE, WiMax, and 3G. Nothing about a 4G LTE usb modem yet. All Sprint devices will not support 800 MHz spectrum for LTE till late 2013 and 2.5 MHz spectrum from Clearwire will not be in devices till early 2013. Make sure to keep this in your mind when you buy a phone, USB modem, or hotspot

I have an article in my backlog that discusses an upcoming broadband card. In the mean time, the new Tri-Network Hotspot is due May 18th.

While the hotspot is nice, I like the USB card because I have an external antenna to improve my signal at home. Then I have the USB card plugged into a Cradlepoint router so I have wi-fi in the house.

Nice little setup. However, do you think your external antenna equipment is compatible with PCS G-Block? I'm not familiar with the in's and out's of those antennas.

The antenna I have now shows the following support:

 

Compatibility:

700-800 / 824-894 / 880-960 / 1850-1990mhz frequencies - 1xRTT (Sprint/Verizon 2G), EVDO/EVDO Rev-A (Sprint/Verizon 3G), LTE (Verizon/AT&T 4G), EDGE (AT&T/T-Mobile 2G), HSPA (AT&T 3G), HSPA+ (AT&T "4G"). T-Mobile 3G and 4G only where 1900mhz is being used (T-Mobile also uses the 1700mhz and 2100mhz bands in some areas; this antenna will NOT help in those cases). Does NOT work for Sprint 4G WiMAX.

 

But at this point, none of the antennas at 3gstore (where I got it) list Sprint LTE as being supported.

 

When the time arrives, I'll see if I need a new one or not... or perhaps a better one. And that time can't come soon enough.

You probably will need a new one once NV is finished because that one will be obsolete, lol. I hate how fast technology becomes obsolete.

Is the antenna passive or active? If it is passive, then it will almost certainly work just fine with the PCS G block. On the other hand, if it is active, then all bets are off.

It's passive so I would hope it would work. The only thing I might need is a new adapter depending on the type of connector the new LTE devices might have.

 

Since you're the Wireless Wavelength guru, looking at the website of the store where I bought my antenna they have a "full-band" omni-directional antenna that looks like a good one too. The gain numbers don't look quite as good as the one I have now but I don't really understand all the numbers.

 

What would be your opinion (if you don't mind giving it to me ;) ) on these two antennas:

The second one is what I have now. Would it be worth spending the money on the newer one when LTE comes along?

      Mapped two n41 small cell sin Jersey City today. They're the first two to be mapped there in Jersey City as far as I can tell and interestingly they're consecutive gNBs, possibly indicating they were installed around the same time. gNB 1088335 appears to be an upgrade of an older small cell. It looks identical to the T-Mobile n41 small cell I mapped earlier this year in Old Westbury.   I also mapped gNB 1088334 in Newport. This small cell appears to be a new build as I couldn't find any evidence of an older small cell in that area. Unfortunately no pic of it since I didn't even notice that I mapped it until I got home and I can't find it in Streetview.

      Someone told me a couple years ago, that there were problems getting certain modems to aggregate overlapping spectrum even if the overlapping parts were actually blanked. So I think there might be firmware issues that need to be resolved first, which T-Mobile might not consider worth the effort for 4MHz at this time.

      Tbh not that surprising. Every ISP seems to want to have an MVNO to pitch to their customers to make them stickier and maybe make some money in the process. And unlike USCC the MVNO should be able to cover TDS's entire wireline area, with infrastructure costs that are borne by someone else. Entertaining, yes. Surprising, not really...particularly when competing against Comcast or Spectrum, or even eventually T-Mobile fixed + mobile. This also strengthens my bet that they'll rebrand all their fixed wireless stuff as TDS, as that runs on spectrum they're keeping for now.

      No? RCS on Google messages works great for me, messages between anyone with RCS enabled go through with no problems. Don't remember the last time I had an issue. I only have issues with people on iPhones on different carriers from T-Mobile.

      Has anyone experienced a ridiculous amount of difficulty with Google messages with RCS enabled?  It has been a train wreck for me for the past year so I now use WhatsApp.  That works very well for all of us.... Android and iOS.
