Just got the viper today' date=' and for a low end phone so far it's great. I will be writing a full review this weekend for the site. Did I get 4g speeds on a NV site?? Just have to wait and see...

That's not fair to leave us in suspense, lol!

One thing the Viper appears to have going for it is relative RF performance. It absolutely smokes the EVO 4G LTE in ERP.

AJ,

So that means the signal comes in better for Viper vs. EVO LTE right??

No, not exactly. ERP is Effective Radiated Power, so that is signal transmitted by the device, not received by the device. (For testing purposes, the FCC is concerned with RF emissions, not reception.) That said, in many devices, transmission/reception abilities are strongly correlated because both use the same antenna with same (or similar) gain structure. But Rx diversity and MIMO antennas throw a monkey wrench into that correlation, as Tx and Rx antennas are often now necessarily separate.

FYI article is done, should publish tonight if Robert has time.

In your review you mentioned a $50 Google wallet credit on the lg viper

Could you elaborate on that?

I can not find any information about a Google wallet credit on any other phone other then the sprint galaxy nexis

Thanks

  • 4 weeks later...

Sprint has lowered the price on the LG Viper LTE to $79 and is offering a $25 dollar Google Wallet credit. Not too shabby of a deal!

Nice Price!

By the way, I'm getting decent battery life on my Viper. After 15 hours of light use, my phone is still at 76%. :)

Thanks. It's a nice phone. Much faster than my Shift. I just haven't installed much on mine yet until I get my data problem fixed. Ended up working today and never made it to Sprint. At least we had work though.

One thing I really, really like on the Viper is how well it fits in my hand. It fits like my 3Gs does. And so far I'm not missing the slide out keyboard, which is the key reason I got the Shift over the Evo 4G to begin with.

Sprint fixed my phone. May have uncovered a potential issue with the PRL file that my phone updated to at activation. They pushed a different PRL and now it works great! :)

The tech pushed prl 24003 to get 3G to work. The bad prl was 50587.

After a few more day's use, what sort of battery life are you seeing? I know each person's experience will be different, but how is it comparing to other phones you have had? My wife is looking at the viper, but is concerned about battery life as her current phone is not doing so hot.

After 2 hours and 11 minutes off the charger, I'm down 20 percent. I'm getting between 7 and 10 hours with moderate usage on average.

    • Your referring to the $25.00 a month Infinite Unlimited plan?  I don't see any other plans on there even cheaper than that on their website.  I was looking at the Motorola 2023 Edge fwiw as well for $10.00 a month.
    • A heavy n41 overlay as an acquisition condition would be a win for customers, and eventually a win for T-Mobile as that might be enough to preclude VZW/AT&T adding C-Band for FWA due to spreading the market too thinly (which means T-Mobile would just have local WISPs/wireline ISPs as competition). USCC spacing (which is likely for contiguous 700 MHz LTE coverage in rural areas) isn't going to be enough for contiguous n41 anyway, and I doubt they'll densify enough to get there.
    • Boost Infinite with a rainbow SIM (you can get it SIM-only) is the cheapest way, at $25/mo, to my knowledge; the cheaper Boost Mobile plans don't run on Dish native. Check Phonescoop for n70 support on a given phone; the Moto G 5G from last year may be the cheapest unlocked phone with n70 though data speeds aren't as good as something with an X70 or better modem.
    • Continuing the USCC discussion, if T-Mobile does a full equipment swap at all of USCC's sites, which they probably will for vendor consistency, and if they include 2.5 on all of those sites, which they probably will as they definitely have economies of scale on the base stations, that'll represent a massive capacity increase in those areas over what USCC had, and maybe a coverage increase since n71 will get deployed everywhere and B71 will get deployed any time T-Mobile has at least 25x25, and maybe where they have 20x20. Assuming this deal goes through (I'm betting it does), I figure I'll see contiguous coverage in the area of southern IL where I was attempting to roam on USCC the last time I was there, though it might be late next year before that switchover happens.
    • Forgot to post this, but a few weeks ago I got to visit these small cells myself! They're spread around Grant park and the surrounding areas, but unfortunately none of the mmwave cells made it outside of the parks along the lake into the rest of downtown. I did spot some n41 small cells around downtown, but they seemed to be older deployments limited to 100mhz and performed poorly.
