Yes that's me, throwback to my early days.

 

Shortmail was actually 10x better than SMS for its time, with web-based inboxing and such.

To clarify, those are/were two separate services.

 

To the messaging.sprintpcs.com address is MT-SMS:  mobile terminated SMS.  Since at least the year 2000, Sprint always has supported SMS.  It was only later, circa 2005, that Sprint added MO-SMS:  mobile originated SMS.  Then, typical SMS functionality worked in both directions.

 

Short Mail was the data based, stopgap solution for mobile originated messaging 2000-2005.  Some people at the time complained that it required data access, that it was not actual SMS.  The funny part is that we now have come full circle.  The likes of Google Voice and iMessage are data based, not actual SMS.

That stuff is still around as well as the (phonenumber)@pm.sprint.com option.  I use both every day to receive pages / alerts on my phone.

I remember it well back in the days of bucket's o text messages and rising text rates.  It was quite nice as the web option was cheaper than SWBell (now ATT)

 

In my case much cheaper since they had the data billing screwed up.  at best, I'd get charged 1/10th the correct rate.  sometimes nothing at all.

 

was great sending hundreds of shortmails for a few cents.  not as convenient, but for a broke college student, I was willing to put up with that.
