I saw this yesterday from Fierce Wireless  http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/sprint-goes-ott-messaging-plus-app-jibe/2013-10-14

being talked about so I decided to give it a spin. I have to say it works pretty good, including doing video calls on 3G. It is for IOS and Android, so give it a spin, and yes you can do regular sms/mms thru the app to for those others who do not have it installed.

I installed it yesterday but didn't see the point plus all the white is just blinding.  I understand giving the Iphone users the blinding white they are given but other users like black backgrounds as it is much easier to read especially at night.  Besides the cosmetic issues I didn't see the point of the app and will just use handcent since I like the pop up messaging and then use google hangouts blinding white background for the rare video call I do since everyone already has that app.

True, but not everyone trust Google in using most of there services and for a good reason to. As for it being blinding white, I can handle it.

I prefer Handset with my custom dark interface. I am pretty sure all that white will drain the battery more, too.

No, white screens do not affect power consumption unless you are using an AMOLED display.  And why would you want to do a thing like that?

They sure chose a piss-poor name for it. Trying to locate it in the Play Store or Google Search it turns up hundreds of results.

Yeah, no kidding. I'm not sure if it's giving me results based on my, ah, web history, but,

Those were the only apps that came up, and that last result...

Searching just "Messaging Plus" pulls up more. It's ridiculous.

Oh, so it's not just Google saying I need a little more gay in my life? Google seems like the company to do something like that, honestly.

It's probably cause of the tags on the apps. But who knows, maybe google is giving you a hint. Maybe google wants to wine and dine you or something!

So I have an iPhone... so I already have iMessage and Facetime... I really don't see the point of this.

What if mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, grams, gramps, nana, papa, etc., do not have your holy chosen phone. Could an an OS agnostic app bridge that gap?

Hmm...

An OS agnostic app, already built in to all Android phones, capable of text chat as well as video calls?

Google Hangouts. It's even hinted that the next version will include SMS support, which could provide an OS-agnostic iMessage and Facetime like experience.

Yes but IOS is using a proprietary standard of there own making and as always will not share. The way Google is going these days , they aren't earning a lot of trust on the privacy front. This app ask for nothing, is supported by Sprint with the standard it is using and being IOS and Android usable.

I wish apple would have stuck to their word and released FaceTime for all platforms. I heard they got hit with some patent lawsuit, which forced them to change how FaceTime works, which caused them to drop those plans. I wish they would reconsider. FaceTime/iMessage on all platforms would actually be good for apple. I do think apple would benefit from becoming more open. I do not believe the iPod would have been as popular if they had not released iTunes for windows.

It only asks for all of your phone info, control, and even your precise GPS location. Not much at all...

    • Been in Japan for the past few days, and I'm about to leave today. Google Fi/Tmus roaming in Japan only had Softbank LTE, so it was pretty slow in busy areas, especially HND (albeit usable in most places). When I got to Osaka, I bought a KDDI native SIM from Aerobile, which is an esim reseller based in Taiwan. With this au/KDDI SIM, I could get NR, and that really improved the network experience here. Even though my phone is missing many ENDC combos here, having b1 + n77 or b3 + n77 or b41 + n78 really helps out with the congested LTE network here. As a bonus, 4cc n257 also works on my s24, and I've reached peaks of 2gbps with it. I'm heading to China today, so hopefully Google Fi supports 5G on whatever carrier they roam on in the mainland. If not, I'll probably be stuck on congested LTE like the first couple of days in Japan.
    • Mike, I just noticed on my S22 Ultra when connected to Verizon n261 SCP is reporting it as n257. I don't see mmwave very often and I didn't notice it at the time I was connected to it. Not sure if it matters but I'm on Visible.
    • Here's my personal best, as well as the maximum speed I was able to get over 5gbps USB tethering. Millimeter wave is definitely a lot of fun, and I wish AT&T and T-Mobile would deploy a lot more of it.
    • WOW! That's utterly insane.
