Listing of Legacy Vendors/Network Vision Vendors by Market

S4GRU

Recommended Posts

We are frequently asked about which legacy vendor is in each market. So we have created a list telling of the legacy vendor, and the new Network Vision vendor, for all 97 of the Sprint markets in the country. See the three posts below, broken down into Sprint Region, Sprint Sub-Region and Sprint market.

P.S. - I had to recreate this thread due to formatting limitations with IP Board. I needed to break each region into it's own post.

Interesting...Samsung must've given Sprint a pretty good deal on NV. They're taking over areas from Lucent and Nortel (now Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson), while AlcaLu and Ericsson are more or less staying put, only grabbing markets where Motorola used to be.

I wonder if Ericsson being 4G-only in many NV locations has to do with their perception that they don't need to upgrade old Nortel equipment as quickly, since I assume the equipment from the same vendor would be compatible across generations. This, in contrast to Samsung, which has to put the pedal to the metal in CHI because there are serious backward compatibility issues between Moto and Samsung gear (but apparently not Moto and AlcaLu, since there haven't been rumblings in those markets).

Count me a Nortel fan as well. I know of one carrier who standardized their network around Nortel awhile back (West Central Wireless - CDMA 1x, GSM, EDGE...not sure what they're using for HSPA/+), and another who was Nortel all along (Pocket Communications, now part of CricKet...they actually had the Nortel logo on coverage maps at their kiosks). Plus, I've been quite happy with the LTE speeds I've seen in Ericsson markets (DFW, SAT, AUS), as well as off-peak 3G speeds in pre-NV areas in those same cities.

In contrast, I wasn't particularly impressed with 3G in the RDU area on Sprint. Maybe I can blame that on the Motorola equipment used there.

One guess as to why AlcaLu didn't fight hard for Sprint's Mountain West deployment is that I don't think they have a big HQ in Colorado anymore. It's Avaya now, which was spun off from Lucent awhile back.

It's interesting to see the pre-NV Sprint vendor map, so to speak (unless someone wants to make a map). Quite a bit of Lucent (some now AlcaLu, lots now Samsung). Quite a bit of Nortel (mostly still Ericsson). PR/VI as the long Samsung market. And a few rather large islands (NC/VA, Chicago, Cincinnati, Hawaii) of Motorola. I'd love to know what vendors other networks used, by region, and what they're using now, but my guess is I won't be able to find that information easily, if at all.

Robert, could Vegas being a Lucent Legacy market have a bearing on a lot of cabinet modifications instead if complete replacement?

All new cabinets at every site, regardless of legacy vendor.

It actually was a blessing in disguise for my Chicago market to be messed up by the moto legacy equipment. It got nv speeded up faster than estimated.

How would you say coverage is as a whole now? Where you live is it heavy 800 voice? How are Lte speeds? Dropped calls? I live in Ohio and I'm hanging on for a change for the better

Nearly every part of the market I've explored now has 1x 800, even it's not marked yet on the map. With an S4 I'm usually parked on SMR, and perhaps that's why I've never had a dropped call. I can't say if you'd experience more dropped calls since an iPhone defaults to PCS and would therefore have to switch bands more frequently.

When you can pick it up, LTE speeds are pretty good. I usually get 8-9 up and down during peak evening hours and 15 down/10 up in the early afternoon, assuming the signal is at least -100 dBm RSRP. If you are really close to the tower or testing early in the morning, the downstream can exceed 20 Mbps. Ping has always been between 50-60ms for me. LTE is available everywhere outdoors, while the odds of getting it indoors are 50/50 (which 800 LTE should rectify for the most part). 3G Ev-DO/eHRPD speeds are back to what they always should have been- between 1-2 Mbps. I don't have a good idea what the new 1xA speeds are there since I almost never lost eHRPD/LTE.

If you have a ways to go on your contract I'd try to stick it out, but if you're up for renewal and the service is pretty bad you could switch to a basic phone on T-Mo or ATT/VZW prepaid and wait until your area is finished. Then when you return you can pick up a tri-band smartphone to get the most out of that shiny new network!

Overall my voice qulaity is good, I drop calls less frequently then I did with ATT.  The only thing that I can say isn't really good are my 3g speeds which overall are very slow.  I know it'll be much better in months to come here in Columbus.  There is no real impending reason I need to switch carriers.  The areas I go on vacation in NY and Florida are heavily upgraded ( although still in NV process ).. Also I'm pretty sure if I switch carriers I'll end up regretting it later.  At least if in another 1+ year(s)  if I decide to switch I will have made a fair assesment of the new Sprint network... until then I'm hanging

    • Well.. my power flickered this evening and kicked my cell spot offline. I noticed that my phone still had service, then the 5G UC showed up on my screen. Honestly thought it was just a hang up from the loss and it was not displaying properly... but then I did a speed test and got 250meg down and 30 Meg upload.... apparently they've added n71 here in the past week and I just found it.  For the first time in 10+ years I don't need a box to give my service at home!! Like a kid with a new toy now...yay!
    • Sounds like a "well you might as well just buy the company" statement
    • Bloosurf is petitioning to deny T-Mobile's request for an STA specifically in their service area. https://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsEntry/attachments/attachmentViewRD.jsp;ATTACHMENTS=Ghl9knTSFp8J4nVm1P9qL4541XR1gy58whH7Yyz0MwGs037gQrNV!-2042069078!-79842837?applType=search&fileKey=1297203795&attachmentKey=21718533&attachmentInd=applAttach Short read but pretty much they're saying that T-Mobile's operations in the BRS/EBS band has been interfering with Bloosurf's LTE-based WISP network and that this has caused them harm (lose customers, etc.) They claim that allowing T-Mobile access to all of the spectrum they bought in or near Bloosurf's service area would cause even more interference. To be fair they aren't wrong. They mention that in 2021 the FCC investigated and determined that T-Mobile was operating outside of its licensed spectrum band there. However, I get the sense that Bloosurf is just trying to stop a competitor from operating in their service area. Typically carriers work this kind of stuff out among each other. Here in NYC, 3/4ths of Brooklyn has 140MHz of n41 deployed and the southern 1/4th of it has 80MHz deployed thanks to an incumbent that leases the spectrum from the archdiocese. In spite of that there are no complaints of interference from NextWave in such a dense environment. Seems to me like Bloosurf just doesn't want to coordinate with T-Mobile and would rather complain to delay the deployment of spectrum for as long as possible. EDIT: It's not just their service area, it's a larger area surrounding their service area as well. Something's fishy about this request.
    • Really cool blog post from OpenSignal giving a broad overview over the mobile network experience in NYC.  https://www.opensignal.com/2023/03/30/localized-analysis-reveals-huge-network-experience-gaps-between-mobile-users-in-the-us
    • Bit too early to tell imo. It's good news if Dish can stop the hemorrhaging. Q3/Q4 2022 they were able to stop the hemorrhaging. Their previous 6 quarters they lost between 160k and 350k subs each. Their next report will be interesting to see how they were impacted subscriber wise due to the hack.
