digiblurROM MK3 S3 Deodex - 2014.01.17

ATTENTION Thin Skinned Users:  Dry humor ahead 1 post.

If you've ventured into the Note2 forums you've seen my ROM before...it's time for an S3 version!

I've always enjoyed a nice simple to the point ROM on my phone.  It seems many ROMs start out as this but tend to stray quickly so I have shared mine for everyone to hate or enjoy.  If you are looking for some heavily themed ROM with 68 notification toggles, everything turned purple, etc, then press the back button now.

I've been working on a slimmed down cleaned up ROM for the Galaxy S3, it's similar to the one I created for the Note2 in the past. It is based on the MK3 Android 4.3 update so you will need to be upgraded to this point and have a custom recovery installed.  KNOX is not included in the ROM but was developed/tested on a device with a KNOX bootloader without any issues.  If you do not have the MK3 bootloader you will need to flash the S3 wifi fix after this ROM is flashed.  This ROM does NOT contain any modem or bootloader flashes!

What the ROM does NOT have:
- Some cute build name
- A cool team name
- beta or alpha version number
- themes
- crazy zombie jumping out the phone for a boot screen
- kiddie boot sounds
- annoying Sprint boot animation/sound
- dumb Sprint shut down animation/sound
- stupid camera shutter sound during screen shots and camera usage(turn off in camera settings)
- idiotic 777468(SPRINT) code requirement on the ##DEBUG# menu (entire prompt is gone)
- MSL code checks on ##DATA# Editing (to quickly turn off LTE without a reboot or MSL code)
- tons of Samsung & Sprint bloat
- 1.21 gigawatts of overclocking
- unnecessary carrier customizations that screws up your Sensorly points
- eyeball icon in the taskbar (removed properly)
- redundant "You have lost data..blah blah" message when switching to roaming (we have a triangle on our signal already!)
- full battery charge notification
- sympathetic support team
- Sprint connection optimizer toggling your wifi and spying on the usage of the neighborhood's open wifi access point
- KNOX garbage and knags
- Headphone volume level too loud nag

What it does have:
- 1X signal type display corrected (shame on you Sprint!!  Tested and works!)
- modified battery icons with battery percentage
- PRL Write enabled in the ##DATA# menu (-PRL Thread Here-)
- 4-in-1 reboot mod
- A mod that announces "I'm watching porn!" every 30 seconds if you write those dumb 00001 PRLs (I wish!)
- All apps multi-window mod built from proper MK3 base files
- KISS principle
- Dry humor in the ROM first post and continued posts throughout the thread by the ROM author
- Sensorly app for LTE mapping and tracking (uninstallable)
- Google Maps 6.14.2 w/KML layer usage (remove updates if it gets auto-updated)
- Blacked out Google Hangouts (the way it should look!)

Screenshots
None needed as it is stock.  Just a status bar shot is necessary

S3STATUSBAR.jpg

Flashing/Upgrading:

Some have manually flashed up to 4.3 without applying the 4.3 KNOX bootloader, this does require the WIFI fix due to the mismatch of software.  There might be other pieces missing such as NVRAM modem tweaks so I personally do not use this method.  The only downside to the 4.3 bootloader is tripping the KNOX flag in the bootloader but my device is long out of warranty anyways.

I always recommend a proper wipe of the system and data when do a ROM install, it may not be required but I have not tested this nor will I help the dirty flashers with issues.  The choice is yours...  If you flash any other mods around the forums on top of this base just remember you could be undoing things brought to you in this ROM.

Like the instructions says, you must be on 4.3, rooted, and have a custom recovery installed like TWRP. Once you're squared away there, you'll download the ROM onto each device, boot to the custom recovery, flash the ZIP file within recovery (Install > Locate/Select .zip you downloaded > Swipe to Confirm Flash), and once that's done, then reboot the device. All done.

So knox doesn't keep it from rooting? Ok I will go jump on the YouTube guy that showed me how to root my note and give it a whirl

Probably the best and easiest method for root is to use Kingo Android Root. You basically plug in the phone, launch the program on the computer, and follow the wizard. Once it starts the rooting process, it'll do everything for you, and should only take 5-10min to finish.

I'll also post the method I used which is pretty simple.

Here's the method I used, it sounds like a lot of steps but it is pretty simple:

If you are not familiar with getting into recovery mode I suggest reading this:  Recovery mode is a bit tricky at times. If you're a second too early or too late, your phone will skip going into recovery and boot normally. If this happens you will have to repeat the Odin process in it's entirety. So unless you are familiar with this, I would give it a few practice runs before starting Odin

Recovery mode is achieved pressing and holding "volume UP, power button and the (physical) home button simultaneously. Watching the screen closely, release all 3 buttons as soon as you see the word Samsung. If timed correctly it will boot into recovery in about 10-20 seconds (after releasing). Remember if you are too early or late the phone will boot normally and skip recovery.

1.  First get ODIN on your machine and working with your phone.  I already had ODIN and the drivers from a while back on my machine but I believe you can get them here:  http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2011491

2.  Download the latest TWRP for the Sprint Samsung GS3.  Get the ODIN flashable TAR:  http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/107

3.  Download the Super SU flashable zip : http://download.chainfire.eu/351/

4.  Download the KNOX remover script 1.0 (don't worry it's universal for the S3/S4/Note2): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2507931

5.  Put the SuperSU zip file and KNOX removal script on your SD card for flashing later.

6.  Power off the S3 with no USB cable attached, go ahead and remove the back cover for easy removal of the battery after flashing.

7.  Get into download mode by pressing and holding volume down, power button and the (physical) home button simultaneously. You will continue to hold all 3 buttons until you see a warning. Then press the volume up button and you will be in download mode.

8. Plug in the USB cable into your phone and open ODIN.  If ODIN is working you should see a COM port listed in the box towards the upper left.

9.  Verify that both Auto Reboot and F. Rest Time are UNCHECKED.

10.  The only check mark should be next to PDA.  Select PDA and browse to the TAR file you downloaded for TWRP.

11.  Hit start.  Watch the progress on the upper left.  Once recovery is installed, pull the battery, so the phone doesn't reboot normally, and disconnect the usb cable.

12.  VERY IMPORTANT.  You will need to reboot into Recovery mode without the phone booting up normally!  If you miss it then the phone will boot into the OS and overwrite the recovery you just installed.

13.  Once you are in TWRP, tap Install and browse to your SD card location where you put SuperSU and the KNOX removal script.  Install/Flash both zip files WIHOUT rebooting in between each of them.

14.  Reboot and you'll be rooted with a custom recovery.

I'm now more curious to try out the DE-SAMSUNGNISER script this developer has. You may not be doing digiROM for the Note 2, but this might be the next best thing to slimming down the ROM and getting rid of the crap. Still won't have the other fixes and tweaks you normally do, but I've managed all this time without them and Wanam Xposed has helped with some of it. Wish there was an easy way to get the 1x fix for the signal bar is all. :P

The Note2 ROM is not far off.

The 1x signal bar has been problematic as Samsung did some crazy crap in the SystemUI. I hope to get it corrected but it will probably not be in the first release.

I would like to install your ROM on my wife's S3. I use your ROM on my Note 2 and love it. I've flashed SlimKat, CM, and PA, but none do what yours does.

I can't think of a higher compliment than that - putting your ROM on my wife's phone.

I dunno why everyone needs to get everything themed, purpled, and tattooed. I like your approach.

Debugging is within Developer Options.

Settings > Developer Options > Enable USB Debugging

You could use the Samsung Galaxy Toolkit, then sideload the backup to your computer. I'm used to doing it with CWM. Still getting used to TWRP. See the post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1979290

As for the ROM, I was getting FC's when I was adjusting the volume sliders from Settings>audio>volumes. I'm not sure if I got a clean download. I was in a rush and had to have a working phone so went back to my other ROM.

Can I install via CWM without problems? I'm more familiar with it's backup function. My first backup with TWRP left me in bad shape.

You should be able to use CWM as nothing is specific. Not sure if CWM does MD5 auto checking though.

As for the FC with audio settings, I just tried multiple ways to do it but it works fine. Nothing has been touched with that part of the Stock ROM. Run a logcat and see if you can see the cause of the crash.

    • Quote from wsj; "The T-Mobile deal could be reached as soon as later this month, while discussions with Verizon on a separate transaction are expected to take longer or might not result in an agreement, the people said." "The rising value of wireless licenses is a driving force behind the deal. U.S. Cellular’s spectrum portfolio touches 30 states and covers about 51 million people, according to regulatory filings." https://specmap.sequence-omega.net/
    • From WSJ which is paywalled but they're reporting that T-Mobile and Verizon are working on a joint deal to buy and split up U.S. Cellular. https://www.wsj.com/business/telecom/t-mobile-verizon-in-talks-to-carve-up-u-s-cellular-46d1e5e6?st=qwngrnh4s3bcr76 — — — — —  Summary from a user in the Reddit thread:
    • So, in summary, here are the options I tested: T-Mobile intl roaming - LTE on SoftBank, routes back to the US (~220ms to 4.2.2.4) IIJ physical SIM - LTE on NTT, local routing Airalo - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer SoftBank), routed through Singapore (SingTel) Ubigi - 5G on NTT, routed through Singapore (Transatel) US Mobile East Asia roaming - 5G on SoftBank, routed through Singapore (Club SIM) Saily - 5G on NTT, routed through Hong Kong (Truphone)...seems to be poorer routing my1010 - LTE on SoftBank and KDDI (seems to prefer KDDI), routed through Taiwan (Chunghwa Telecom) I wouldn't buy up on the T-Mobile international roaming, but it's a solid fallback. If you have the US Mobile roaming eSIM that's a great option. Otherwise Ubigi, Airalo, or my1010 are all solid options, so get whatever's cheapest. I wouldn't bother trying to find a physical SIM from IIJ...the Japanese IP is nice but there's enough WiFi that you can get a Japanese IP enough for whatever you need, and eSIM flexibility is great (IIJ as eSIM but seems a bit more involved to get it to work).
    • So, the rural part of the journey still has cell service for nearly all the way, usually on B18/19/8 (depending on whether we're talking about KDDI/NTT/SoftBank). I think I saw a bit of B28 and even n28 early on in the trip, though that faded out after a bit. Once we got to where we were going though, KDDI had enough B41 to pull 150+ Mbps, while NTT and SoftBank had B1/B3 IIRC. Cell service was likewise generally fine from Kawaguchiko Station to Tokyo on the express bus to Shinjuku Station, though there were some cases where only low-band LTE was available and capacity seemed to struggle. I also figured out what I was seeing with SoftBank on 40 MHz vs. 100 MHz n77: the 40 MHz blocks are actually inside the n78 band class, but SoftBank advertises them as n77, probably to facilitate NR CA. My phone likely preferred the 40 MHz slices as they're *much* lower-frequency, ~3.4 GHz rather than ~3.9, though of course I did see the 100 MHz slice being used rather often. By contrast, when I got NR on NTT it was either n28 10x10 or, more often, 100 MHz n78. As usual, EMEA bands on my S24 don't CA, so any data speeds I saw were the result of either one LTE carrier or one LTE carrier plus one NR carrier...except for B41 LTE. KDDI seems to have more B41 bandwidth live at this point, so my1010 or Airalo works well for this, and honestly while SoftBank and NTT 5G (in descending order of availability) have 5G that's readily available it may be diminishing returns, particularly given that I still don't know how to, as someone not from Hong Kong, get an eSIM that runs on SoftBank 5G that isn't the USM "comes for free with the unlimited premium package" roaming eSIM (NTT is easy enough thanks to Ubigi). In other news, I was able to borrow someone's Rakuten eSIM and...got LTE with it. 40 Mbps down, 20 Mbps up, 40ms latency to Tokyo while in Tokyo...which isn't any worse than the Japan-based physical SIMs I had used earlier. But not getting n77 or n257 was disappointing, though I had to test the eSIM from one spot rather than bouncing around the city to find somewhere with better reception. It's currently impossible to get a SIM as a foreigner that runs on Rakuten, so that was the best I could do. Also, I know my phone doesn't have all the LTE and 5G bands needed to take full advantage of Japanese networks. My S24 is missing: B21 (1500 MHz) - NTT B11 (1500 MHz) - KDDI, SoftBank B42 (3500 MHz) - NTT, KDDI, SoftBank n79 (4900 MHz) - NTT Of the above, B42/n79 are available on the latest iPhones, though you lose n257, and I'm guessing you're not going to find B11/B21 on a phone sold outside Japan.
