  1. I'm on the last stretch of finishing up the base layout of the spreadsheet, and was wondering if you could both take a look at it for me? I'm still not 100% sure I have the whole "how to find GCI's" properly, but I put a few in that I'm a 100% sure are correct.

I will also need help on how to properly embed it and how to do the maps properly too. Any help is much appreciated!!  :)

I have the premier thread here!

Looking at the speadsheet, It looks like you may need more gci, Before you make a forecast gci on them. Have Dkoellerwx(david) look at it, he did chicago forecast gci and embedded stuff.

  2. Let me know if I can help too! Helped set up the Minnesota, Chicago, Colorado, Missouri and Kansas sheets. ;)

    Maybe Milwaukee too? Can't remember.

    He does good work ;)

I think what I'll do is setup the thread this weekend - it'll be messy at first - but that way I can attempt to embed what I have in a post and so everyone can see what I have thus far. Plus that way we can quickly comment too.

Thank you both btw! The more hands on deck I have with this, the faster (and better) it will be!  :)

Your welcome, just let me know what you need me for :)

  3. Exciting news! I've received the thumbs up from Robert and with the help of uecker87 to get started, I'll be creating a premier North Wisconsin map/spreadsheet thread for all of us to keep tabs on our towers and join in the B41 tracking fun!  :D

I'm still in the early stages of creating everything. But for the time being - so you can play along at home - we can start to track and getting confirmation on bands, GCI's, TAC's, and as we go along we can tweak it. Especially since I'm still learning as I go to.

    Happy hunting!

Let me know if you need any help, I will let you know. GCI are key to get everything going :). I can't wait to see the map/spreadsheet :tu:

  4. Has Sprint given an indication on how many USCC towers they will convert?

Sadly no! In central illnois, it seems like they are building where uscc use to have coverage. That is due to losing uscc for roaming though. In Chicago market, It is where they have fair coverage. Like burlington, hampshire(part of the town is roaming), just a few examples. Chicago is the model market, so this is going to happen in other areas :D

  5. Major carriers partner to bring LTE to Chicago's subway

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced that the city has reached a deal with Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile to bring 4G LTE from all four carriers to the Chicago Transit Authority's subway system. The network, which will replace the decade-old system currently in Chicago's subways, will provide continuous coverage for 22 miles.

The deal is worth $32.5 million with all four carriers agreeing to fund the entire upgrade related to the design and construction of a next generation distributed antenna system.  The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

Will Sprint be utilizing these 1900 LTE Pico Cells for Chicago's subway?

"The contract with Aldridge, based in Libertyville, is a key part of a $27 million project to improve the subway cellular network, consisting of about 111/2 miles of underground passage on the Blue and Red lines. The network, which the CTA licenses to six wireless service providers, generates $1.8 million a year to the transit agency, officials said.

Aldridge will use the CTA's existing fiber-optic cable, power sources and other equipment to minimize the upgrade's cost, officials said."

  6. A new site directly to band 41? That's nice to see. Maybe they're the norm these days, but I've yet to see one.

    Sent from my iPhone 6+

Yea! All new sites will have 800/1900 antenna and a TDD 2600 band 41 antenna for every new site :D, I found another uscc converted site in Hampshire last night. For premier members, This one and new site in Hampshire are on the maps already in the premier section. I know we don't have as many people as we use to, who come on the Chicago boards. But Chicago market is becoming a fun one to watch all the new progress :D

  7. Same situation here. USCC came through 2-3 years ago and plopped towers all over this area in small towns - all that I have visited indicate they are USCC owned.

I did however read an article on fierce wireless that said that they recently sold 500+ towers to Vertical Bridge. Not sure of what towers specifically - but it's possible that Veritcal Bridge still needs to get signage and stuff updated. *shrug*

The converted tower here is still not broadcasting. Appears that all the ground work has been done for nearly a month now - but no sign of the switch being flipped. :(

It sounds like from http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/us-cellular-agrees-sell-non-core-towers-159m/2014-12-11 "The carrier has been trying for months to sell what it had termed "non-strategic" towers in areas outside of its core markets." That sounds like all the markets it sold to sprint. This was pretty recently, so I am not surprised that the towers still say uscc on them. Yea the converted tower here isn't on and I will let you guys know when it is.

  8. It is widely known/assumed that Sprint gets significantly more favorable roaming rates from USCC and other smaller providers than it gets from Verizon. My point was that it may not have been economical to build out an area when it was covered by USCC, but once you have to pay Verizon's roaming rates, then the calculation may change.

Yea and sadly they got more spectrum from uscc spectrum deal. But then lose uscc coverage from chicago, all the way down to saint louis for roaming. So now I don't blame them for using uscc towers, so they don't have to pay verizon.I am sure uscc is giving sprint a nice leasing deal on the towers too, seeing how they are losing money on the towers(dead asset). Since, now they basically they don't use the cell site. We have a uscc turning into sprint site in the chicago(filling in a nice gap were coverage is poor too) and hopefully have more coming soon.

  9. Interesting way to raise capital for NV upgrades. I hope nTelos is proactively ordering backhaul so that when they eventually replace cabinets/panels/rrus they will be able to fire up LTE right away. I was in Chestnut Ridge park in Morgantown last weekend and while 1x on 1900 was ok it did fall off pretty quickly once we got into the woods. 1x 800 would've fixed that.

It is the new thing now, to sell your towers to a tower company and then the tower company leases them back to the company. I am not surprised at them doing this, and I am happy they are doing it. It means that they are taking some steps to funding network vision. I agree with the backhaul thing, I hope sprint taught them a few lessons about that. That was the biggest fail of network vision upgrades

  10. Had Pretty decent LTE service at the base of the tower. But driving in Burlington didn't really seem better.  I forgot to check if the meter was running. I think its still being worked on. That tower was sorely needed and its really good to see Sprint adding additional towers to some very sore points.   Here's to hope they also use the US Cell tower half a mile from me in Marengo. Service Sucks in and around my house and Att wont give me better the 3megs on Dsl.   :)

    Cheers

You should have full strength/bars if you right by the base of the tower, sounds like it isn't turned on yet. Either way, It will be nice to have when turned on. It should help out with coverage in hampshire too :). Let me know when it is turned on, I will add it to the premier map :D. On a funny note, I was looking at sprint coverage the other day and was like. They really need to fix that hole in coverage in burlington and hampshire. Well They are :P

  11. The east side of wichita is atrocious. And when you look and see how spread out the towers are band 41 is going to do very little to help. If your not within a .5 - 1 mile of a tower on Rock or Webb expect poor service. A ticket was filed abt the service in the 13th and Webb area and Sprint claimed a engineer investigated but there wasnt anything that could be done immediately. Still waiting on a call back from executive customer service with more of an explanation. If your close to a tower service is ok, but if youre not close on the east side your phone is nearly worthless.

Here are a few places i know abt the service:

Twin peaks - sprint service is weak

Fox and hound - service sucks

    Red robin - service sucks

Cabelas - decent - twr is across the st

Towne east mall - inside sucks

Old chicago by towne east - decent

    Whole foods - sucks

Hopefully improvements are coming. sprint has some of the worst service in one of wealthiest areas of the city.

that is typically due to not being able to put a put towers in thoses areas, rich people don't like to see ugly things like cell towers. Yet they demand good cell service hmmmm

  12. This first link is when they were going to build their own 4g network

    http://www.alcatel-lucent.com/press/2013/002822

This second link is when they switched to use sprints

    http://www.alcatel-lucent.com/press/2014/alcatel-lucent-lte-technology-selected-ntelos-wireless-support-its-strategic-network-alliance-sprint

Hope this helps people who have questions on what they are doing and why it is taking so long. That second  press release wasn't until September 2014.

  13. Sprint updated their coverage map and it's now more realistic as far as Spark coverage. For example here in Tampa they took away roughly 60 percent of the Spark coverage shade yellow. It almost matches the WiMAX footprint to a t. I also noticed they did the same thing across the country. So the map would indicate Spark coverage only where band 41 is present.

I will agree with that, Chicago market is now more true to what the coverage map should reflect
