  1. Here is something to think about. Just using round numbers. VZW has 90 million subs. AT&T has 100 million subs. VZW sold 4.1 million iphones for the quarter and AT&T sold 6 million for the quarter. What I want to know from the numbers is where the heck is 70 percent coming from? Unless it is 70 percent from previous numbers which does not make it a gain, makes it a loss.

I think the troll was trying to say % of just smart phone users, but was using some very fuzzy logic/math to make his case.  I had the same thought when initially reading the thread

  2. How can I tell if I am using 800 mhz? I have the signal check app but don't know what it all means.

Signal check will show 1X800 on the screen.  Unfortunately, you appear to be in utah.  The Utah SID is what Sprint is using to "hide" test 800Mhz signals nationwide.  Unless you are using a custom PRL to look at that SID, you won't see 800 until Sprint puts it in the stock PRL.

  3. New observation... Due to issues with LTE and my cm maintainer being out of town, I reverted to an older nightly with different RIL blobs. My issues with Google Services have been greatly reduced. The maintainer has gone back to these older blobs and others are reporting much better LTE experience. I'm going to switch to that build soon and see how the Google apps act.

  4. Hi Jef,

I can't answer specifically for the GNote2, since I don't own one. Here are the screenshots from my GNex:

    Have a great day!

This only works on the gnex because the android base is designed to work with those functions. The cm maintainer for the note 2 has been trying for weeks to get those functions working in the note 2. If your base build doesn't include the functionality, then the app won't work, it is just calling those functions...

  5. Nope. Interlachen, Florida. However, my Mom's family is all from Western Michigan. I was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Rapids and spent first years as a Michigander.

I remember that convo now.  I went to St. Mary's when I broke my wrist 16 yrs ago.  I think it has a new name now, one of the "Super Hospital" groups...

  6. Interesting tidbit from a west Michigan note 2 user...

I picked up 800/smr on my way to the campground. Every time I'm on smr and I make a call or send a text, I end up back on PCS/1900mhz. Then I stick on PCS for a few hours. Is there any way to watch what frequency you are in during a call?

  7. The real question is, if Sprint get this spectrum, will it be easy to adapt existing PCS A-G antennas and RRUs to use this spectrum, or will they have to go mount separate equipment on the rack just to use it? I don't suppose existing phones could be software updated to use it too?

Any active electronics will have to be replaced or supplemented. Passive electronics may be reusable. In other words, new RRUs and new devices. Maybe new panels.

Any existing device could be recertified for additional spectrum. Sprint with do it for phones, but it wouldn't shock me if they tried for antennas or RRUs.

  8. Thats what I am trying to figure out. Is it part of the hotspot or not. Clearly if it is not then it is a TOS violation and thats what I am trying to figure out. I would much rather tether than use the hotspot if it is not a violation.

Is this the official Sprint Hotspot app or a 3rd party tethering app?

  9. You would need to have tethering enabled on your plan or be using a custom ROM that has tethering hacked in to work for free.  Be advised that tethering without having it on your plan violates the T&Cs and is not a conversation allowed at S4GRU.

If you have the hotspot added to your plan, then you should have no issue.

  10. AJ, is the theory that Clear deployed WiMax using that much spectrum to protect the licenses?  I believe I read from you once that each sector on a tower is using a completely different piece of spectrum, rather than reuse to make sure they were covered for licensing.

If that is correct, couldn't the WiMax carrrers be reconfigured for spectrum reuse, thus freeing up additional BRS/EBS for LTE?

  11. Sorry if this is a dumb question and sorry if there was a post somewhere with this very question... but can someone explain to me what PCS, AWS means? Pros/Cons for each of them? I kind of know that lower band frequencies are better for building penetration and distance and the higher frequencies are for short distance and better in regards to speed(?). If there was a post, a link would be great so i can read up on it. Thanks.

PCS is in the 1900Mhz range for up and down links, AWS is split between 1700Mhz downlink and 2100Mhz uplink (i might have those reversed).  They share very similar propagation characteristics.

The sub1Ghz spectrum is where you really see propagation changes.  The old 850Mhz cellular that Red/Blue use, and the 700Mhz rebranded TV spectrum can travel much further and deeper into buildings.  The SMR spectrum that Sprint is using in the  800Mhz band will be much better for rural areas and much better for urban areas for penetration than current PCS.

  12. Same here as I didn't have any issues when I was in 800smr areas either. But I did see someone in the Shentel market saying they had issues.

Doesn't bother me at this point though as I will just overwrite the 2xxx. No 800smr cdma in my area anyways. Maybe next month or so I will get to test it out. Work in this market has slowed dramatically in the past few weeks. Not sure if the market launch has anything to do with it or just backhaul availability.

I expect to see a ton of CDMA SMR lighting up in West Michigan as we have terrible towers spacing from iPCS, kinda like ya'll deal with in NOLA.

  13. I wonder if that will be pushed quickly or will it be held back until they fix the baseband.  I'm sure the baseband 800SMR fix is high priority as that affects roaming dollars.

I'm wondering what the baseband issue is actually is, I've been using your PRL and had no issues on SMR for voice and text.
