    LG G3

Looks like a great phone, but given that I already have a tri-band device, I am going to wait for a phone capable of connecting to Sprint's 8T8R radios.

I think we will be waiting a pretty long time before we see that happening any time soon on B41 LTE.  I wouldn't worry about a phone that doesn't have 8T8R capability.  Who knows when the starting point is if when 8T8R RRUS are being put up at the Clearwire towers and all the existing B41 LTE sites are not 8T8R capable so they will need to be retrofitted AGAIN at some point unless Sprint doesn't care.

    LG G3

"even though it is still plastic"

Where did you see that? Maybe I missed some leaks here and there but the live event said, "light weight metal".  Overall, I feel now, after seeing the UI and other additional features, I'll probably get it even though it's not a huge bump from the G2, the total package has drawn me in. :)

Being that we all are pretty keen on RF performance around here, it'll be interesting to see how that looks on paper as well and.... if the device they were showing is the wireless charging device or if they are doing 2 variations like the G2.  It was strange to see the 2 versions in the G2 but I'd use wireless charging if available and if not, no worries.

Basically the tech bloggers who actually did the "hands-on" of the LG G3 in the showroom confirmed it is still plastic.  It has a metal-like finish from the outside but the backing is still plastic since it is removable.

Not sure how much difference .3 of an inch will make in the grand scheme of things.
The bezels are smaller so, in theory, the bigger G3 screen will be in almost the same size phone as the G2. A millimeter here and there will not make a difference.
    Just my $.02

    Mav.  :ninja:

Sent from my Sprint Tri-Band LG G2.

Actually I am looking at the dimensions of the phone and the LG G3 is about the same height as the HTC One M8 except the LG G3 has a 0.5 inch larger screen than the HTC One M8.  The LG G3 dimensions are not simply the same as the LG G2 but with smaller bezels.

    LG G2 = 5.45 x 2.79 x 0.35 inches (138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm)

    LG G3 = 5.76 x 2.94 x 0.35 inches (146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm)

    HTC One M8 = 5.76 x 2.78 x 0.37 inches (146.36 x 70.6 x 9.35 mm)

    GS5 = 5.59 x 2.85 x 0.32 inches (142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm)

LG did a great job one again in bringing back some of the key features which made Samsung stand out which were removable battery and microSD card support.  Love the "polished metal finish" look even though it is still plastic.  I'll be interesting in seeing this new laser auto focus and the QHD resolution.  Nice specs overall and "keeps up with the jones".

  1. Any word on what Sprint's plan is after then? An organic build-out spaced for 600 MHz LTE and SMR (including protection sites for PCS G) shouldn't be too costly.

No word yet on their roaming plan beyond July 2016.  Who knows how long 600 MHz equipment will take to have enough equipment ramped up in production and crews to deploy the 600 MHz spectrum.  I think at this point, Sprint needs to focus on deploying 800 MHz CDMA and LTE like gangbusters between now and July 2016 to close the gap as close as possible.

  2. AT&T's UMTS voice network is inferior, coverage wise, to Verizon's CDMA. Now, their LTE networks might end up being equal as both of them have nationwide spectrum.  And I thought that the Alltel roaming deal expires in 2016.

The Alltel roaming agreement does expire on July 1, 2016.

    LG G3

Now this article says the Odin processor is in the phone...so which is it? This will be what determines whether I stay on g2 or move up to this one...

Trust me the US variant of the G3 won't use the Odin processor.  It will be a Qualcomm processor due to Qualcomm having superior chips for CDMA/LTE integration.  Don't you even think twice about it.  The Odin processor variant will be for the international version only.

  3. I think the 900 MHz band is included in Band 26. So, assuming that is correct, then Sprint wouldn't need to seed new phones to customers that already have Band 26 capable devices.

    -Anthony

The 900 MHz band is NOT included in B26.  B26 only covers 814-849 MHz and 862-897 MHz

With all the talk of the Galaxy S5 prime or whatever it might be called, maybe LG is planning a G2+ to make sure they get the 2K display to market first. LG has a history of firsts in smartphones

No point of wasting resources on a G2+.  LG should just focus on making a G3 and make it great and everyone will be happy.

  4. why will Sprint only be getting the 16GB and not the Larger internal memory models? Or will the Larger ones come later?

Carriers stopped carrying the different memory storages for phones (not named iPhone) just because the sales for the higher capacity Android phones (ex: 32 GB GS3 or whatever) didn't sell well or not enough demand because they already have a microSD card slot.  Most folks opt to get the just the basic 16 GB model and pop in a huge microSD card slot to get their mass storage fix instead of paying an extra $100 to get 16 GB more of internal memory.  Even a 64 GB microSD card slot is way cheaper than paying an extra $100.  This way it helps the carriers reduce the number of skus and inventory that most folks aren't going to order anyways.

With the HTC One and LG G2 last year where there was no microSD card slot, all the US carriers opted to sell just the 32 GB model since they knew folks were going to complain since there was no way to add more storage and why the carriers wouldn't at least sell the higher storage model.

  5. Really?

    Link please!

Shouldn't folks know by now that if you want to learn or be aware of all the latest hacks, tweaks, etc of any cell phone (not named iPhone) to go look on XDA-developers.com forums to find out about this stuff? I swear I see these questions always come up and the answer is always xda-developers.
  6. Yep.

I wonder if there is a plan to go back to all the current B41 sites and upgrade them to 8T8R equipment.  I think there should be.  However I think for now its more important for Sprint to just continue to expand the B41 LTE coverage with Clearwire sites and then once all the Clearwire sites are done, then go back and retrofit all the existing Clearwire sites that were not upgraded to 8T8R equipment.

  7. Historically, it will keep pestering you. If it pops up while your doing something else, you might tap the update

Well if you are rooted, you can just go to your file explorer and go to the path of /cache/fota folder and delete the 618 MB update file.  That way the phone won't install the update since the file is gone.

  8. It is a step backwards when i have to give up 45+ fast b41 sites in a emerging market where there is often no lte, all because of the removal of hidden menu features

Just don't install the update.  Simple.

    LG G3

LG has been excellent with updates so far.  No reason to think they will not support the flagship model for 2-3 generations.  I expect to receive updates on this phone until 2015 when I grab the G4  ;) .

Hopefully the G3 will come out with amazing specs and will be another great hit.  I'll see how things are with the LG G3 and see how it might translate into the LG G4.

  9. How can we prevent this updated from appearing?

Any ways to kill it if Sprint tries to force it?

Being in an emerging market with hidden b41, i am not willing to go backwards. Already did that by giving up wimax.

Now i will strongly consider this update once my market is officially launched with all lte bands fully open

why do you think the ZVC update is a step backwards?  It seems to have fixed a few things for the better.  LTE reception seems to be good.

  10. Is anybody experiencing fast battery drains with the update? Mine is draining about 15-20% on 15 minutes of light use. Before kk I might have gone through 2-3% at the most. All settings on my phone are the same as they were before the update. I installed it the normal way.

Yes I am experiencing that as well.  Have you looked at your battery status to see what applications are draining your battery?
